Annoying yes. Not as annoying as someone mowing a yard, hitting something that stalls the engine, restarting, then repeat, over and over, and over again.

I hit something once that stalled my mower engine - permanently. The crank shaft got bent. I would think any time a stall by hitting would do some damage to engine, break blade, etc.

@@donyboy73 There was a guy I knew who had really tall grass to cut with a push mower: he'd push it into the grass, engine would stall. Pull the mower back, restart the engine, push it in again and stall the engine. Over and over. He didn't know to ease into the grass to avoid stalling, or to listen to the engine to tell when to ease up. Incredible.

This repair 100% worked for me. I had this surging issue on a Honda gcv190 engine mounted to a pressure washer. The second jet with the screw you had to remove (5:26) seemed to be my main issue. It was difficult to find a micro drill bit around my area. Finally found one and it took some time and patience to drill it out but eventually I got it. No more surging. Thank you so much!

Very helpful video, after thoroughly cleaning the pilot jets my 2 pressure washer engines work perfectly now. I recently picked up 2 craftsman pressure washers at Lowes for only $25 each, they were customer returns being sold as parts only. I'm guessing the people couldn't get them started so returned them. Turns out both carbs just needed to be cleaned really good. The 1st time I failed to remove and clean the pilot jets and both machines surged with the choke off, so after watching this video I located the pilot jets and unblocked them with a bread tie wire, they were completely blocked.

Great video! I watched this video several or more times to study it. I have a new Honda mower that’s only a few months old, it didn’t take long to start reving up and down all the time; also hard to start. My wife really didn’t like it at all. I tried several different things, but still raced up and down. I bought some new replacement gaskets and mini drill bits. I did everything you described, except that you never mentioned the size drill bit for the bottom Jet; where the mulsion tube goes. But I figured it out, process of elimination. I got the jets drilled out best I could, cleaned everything out, put new gaskets on got the carb put together and back on the mower. I cleaned the spark plug, and the mower started right up! I let it run for quite awhile, and tried to see if I could make it race up and down again; but couldn’t. It always ran nice and smooth! Thanks for your help! I hope my wife will be happy with it. 🙂👍

Thanks for the video. Appreciated. One GCV-160-AS3A Honda engine carburetor cleaned up and running great. Symptoms were it would only run on choke. When I took the choke off to a high speed it would start to surge. Took the carb off and totally cleaned it right out and put it back together. It started on the first pull and now idles at all speed settings. Thanks again from a DIY'er. Cheers

Female here - I magine that’s rare 😂 This is exactly what my lawnmower is doing. Plus it almost sounds like it’s going to backfire but hasn’t yet. It’s kind of coughing and spluttering. If I can fix something myself I will. I fixed my dishwasher once. Found the faulty part ordered it online and installed it, saved myself $250. These instructions are very clear and very methodical. As long as I follow each step I should be right. I don’t have a drill so I won’t be drilling to enlarge any holes. Maybe a fine pin or needle might clear it. The other annoying issue I have is the clip director won’t stay in place which means I can’t keep it in mulch mode and can only keep it in bag mode. I suspect there’s a spring missing. Wish me luck! Update. The guy at Bunnings had no idea what a JIS screw was so I couldn’t get the driver I needed so couldn’t get in to clean the idle circuit. But whatever I could clean did the trick. No more surging. Thankyou so much for this video!

Great video. Very helpful and a practical solution to a common problem. I agree about carbs on Honda engines - difficult to put it all back on. What I've done is purchase some M6 X120mm threaded rod and screw them into the block and then slip everything on and get it aligned. Once I'm comfortable I have it all aligned then I remove the rods one at a time and put in the hold down bolts. I've cut a slot in one end of the threaded rods to assist in removing the rods if they happen to get stuck in the block. Has worked like a charm.

I have to do the same to my Ariens snowblower, it surges a bit as well. I'm guilty of putting it away and not fixing the issue. Spring and then summer came so fast I just never got to it and since of course, I don't need it then, it rarely crosses my mind with the mental "things to do" list. Thanks for the reminder I'll have to get on it.
@QuaabQueb
@QuaabQueb 3 года назад
The jet you enlarged is the idle circuit jet. When the engine is running under little or no load it is pulling gas from the idle circuit as well as the main jet. When the engine is under load or the rpm is increased it will pull more gas from the main jet. Usually I can get them to come back with a good blast in the ultrasonic cleaner. There is a thin channel in the main stem if the carburetor which often becomes blocked. Enlarging the idle circuit jet should only be done as an absolute last resort, some times as these engine age and wear, they simply need more gas to idle which is why this technique helps. However if you enlarge the idle circuit without properly cleaning the carburetor you are not actually solving the problem.

A friend gave me a 42" Troy Bilt riding mower, it was pretty beat up (lack of maintenance) and made considerable amount of repairs. The engine is a Kohler Courage 19 HP and it surged like the Honda you were working on. The carburetor is very similar to the one on my Kohler, same gasket problems and throttle and governor linkage.

Hey Don,..... Your RU-vid channel is the "go-to channel" for any small engine repair. 👍 The lawnmower I'm having a problem with is a Troy - Built TB 110 550EX 140cc engine. My son purchased this for me 2 years ago. It started having problems with stalling out and not starting, I will take the carburetor off and tear it down to investigate, there was no problem I can see. I reinstalled it, and it would run normally for five to six cuts. Then the problem with it is that it keeps repeat itself and I'll have to go through the process of working on the carburetor again. Well, I bought a new carburetor, installed it, and now my engine is revving up and down. What do you think is causing the first problem? Second, what's the problem with this carburetor I bought online? 😂😆 Thanking you in advance. 👍

Hi Don, many thanks for your video which pinpointed exactly where the problem was with my mower. I would have followed your advice in stripping down the carb but I thought I would run some Redex through the engine first, which had no immediate result as expected, and so I left the mower in my garage for a few days to give it a chance to work its magic and today it started first time and ran like new. Thanks again, Dave in the UK

I found your Video a little too late to help me today, but it was a good video. I had already torn apart my Carb and Cleaned it, with special attention to the Jets. I never thought about Drilling out the Jets. I do have some small drill bits from when I drilled out the Jets on my Motorcycle years ago, but these bits were a little bit too big for this job. Guess I'll have to go visit a local Hobby Shop and buy the right size bit for the next time this happens (I'm sure it will happen). I have a Very Small Hand Drill for Small Bits like this, I purchased it at the Hobby Shop. I also had to make a couple of Gaskets as the Gaskets I removed had some areas where I wasn't sure if they were sealing or not. I purchased a Sheet of Gasket Material at a local Automotive Store years ago and already had it on hand. Again, thanks for the great video!

Easy method to replace carb. Cut 2 X 6-inch lengths of earthing cable (5mm diam) or similar. Push the cables into the manifold first (where the carb long bolts normally go). Then thread onto the cables your gaskets and carb and gasket and air filter housing onto the cables. Push to hold your carb in place and pull out one of the cables and insert and fasten the long bolt. Then do same for other one. Done.

The engineer sent it back with note saying carburettor rebuilt wrongly. Duh! I'd told them about that when they collected it. They Cleaned air filter again and put on new plug. Sharpened blade and sent back to me, sayingit was running perfectly. First time I tried it, it was surging when hot. Sent back to engineer. Its back and fine now. Didn't see when they dropped it off but on sheet was written W U D in additional parts section. What is that please? Just wondering if I'm going to get another bill. Unless it stands for Wot u doing? 9/10 times on Honda GCV160 and GCV190 it's more cost effective for a shop to replace the carb as those carbs are typically $12-$20 in the USA anyways...

"We're not working on the space shuttle..." I bet there's someone out there wondering what the torque specs are for the wing nut that holds down the air filter. We're cutting grass NOT flying to the moon. Good stuff.

Don, this is the first time I have seen you not flush everything with lots of carb cleaner. I noticed too that you hate using those gloves, me too. I usually spray my hands with WD40 after and then use hand cleaned BUT the other day I bought some dawn dish liquid and put about 150ml in a pump bottle with about 400ml of water. Well I found it so amazing that I had to tell you about it. Just spray a little on each hand and the grease gone.

Agreed those carb assemblies are a pita compared to the old stud/nut design. I can't imagine why the changed the design. It seems it is not an easier way to assemble at the factory.
