6 years later and this video is still helping people out. (5/24/2022 today) Thanks Jeff! A neighbor just bought a new mower and gave me this very model of Toro in your video. Because it... wait for it.... it would start and then die. 15 minutes after getting it home I was mowing with it. Truly, thanks for making this video Jeff!
I was about to make up another “Free, needs work” sign and leave my mower by the road. But thanks to this video 20 minutes later I was back to mowing. Thank you!
Jeff Had my lawn mower in storage following a move to a place where I thought I’d never have to use it again. But my grandson is now mowing lawns in our neighbourhood and asked if he could use it. I filled it with gas and it would start and quit immediately. Followed your excellent utube on how to find and clean the injection piece. Soaked it as described and now it purrs like a kitten. Things go better with Coke! Thx a million
I started mowing my lawn this morning when suddenly the mower started running very slow, too slow to cut the grass. I came in the house, went on RU-vid, found this video, followed the advise, started the mower and finished cutting my lawn. THANKS!
omfg this worked! my dad was a mechanic at a landscaping biz for 30 years, i helped for 6. we used old lawnboys i use to just give the carb a clean. well my dad passed away leaving me with alot of equipment thats half running half broke. so i remember in convo once he said "all that thing needs is a gasket i told the person it was junk" so i put the new gasket on he had set to the side and it kept starting and dying after 10 seconds. sure enough i pulled that plug off and both holes were all gunk! i said still, theres no way this is going to work i always have bad luck. sprayed carb clean through it and used a pin to push the gunk out. put it back together. FIRST PULL IT STARTED! ran like a fucking beast i cut the whole damn yard. thank you!
I landscaped back in the 80’s and I loved those old Lawnboys. I wish I still had one of those mowers because they were lightweight and would run forever with routine maintenance.
This video saved me today. For the past few months, my mower had been running rough after initial start but then smoothed out after about a minute. Today, it started dying on me. I followed the steps here and got it running smoothly again.
I had this exact problem on my 2009 Toro "Guaranteed to Start" Recycler with a 6.75 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. I thought I would have to take apart the carburetor but your solution worked for me. I did use carb cleaner instead of Coke and so was able to clean the jet and bowl within 10 minutes. Also, I tipped the mower down onto its handle to prevent my full tank of gas from spilling out when I removed the jet and bowl. Thanks for producing this video!
Thanks for the video! Elevated the mower and tilted it back and clamped the gas feed tube so I wouldn't have to drain gas tank. Just the gas in the bowl, with old towel under worked. Kept old gasket and just manually cleaned jet, even though it didn't look dirty. Nevertheless, mower now starts easily, and remains running smoothly. So glad you posted this Jeff.
After replacing the Spark Plug and cleaning the Carb it ran fine for a while. Then it started running bad again. Checked the Spark, even cleaned and adjusted the Gap. Still ran rough. Discouraged until i found you post on RU-vid. So I checked the jet it was plugged and there was more dirt in the bowl. Cleaned the Bowl and Jet and WHOW its a new mower, runs great. Thanks Jeff Your the Bees Knees Bro!
Thanks for the video. I had the same problem. Before going through your solution, I titled the mower left (towards the gas tank) and restarted it. It worked after that. I don't know why, but it worked and is still working.
Thank you for getting straight to the point. I hope that is what my problem is. I have seen other (very long and drawn out) videos that take 15 minutes to explain what you just did in less than 5 minutes.
Well. I went through the whole fuel system. Made sure the gas cap was good and properly venting, the fuel line was good, the little jet that is in the bolt at the bottom of the cup under the carb. Sprayed down the carb with cleaner. Blew everything off with a compressor. Everything was already clean to begin with but after I cleaned it anyway, the mower ran great. (New spark plug and blade also). Thanks so much for the video.
Thank you for this video. My husband took our toro completely apart and put it back together checking all the usual things. He got it where it would start with starter fluid but not stay running. I did a little google search that came across your video so we headed back out to check ours. Sure enough we got it to start and stay running.
You nailed it. Fixed in just a few minutes. My float bowl stayed attached to the carb and I cleaned the jet with a welding tip cleaner. Runs like new. Thank you for the tip.....
OMG you are Awesomeness!!! I have the exact same mower. It would start then die immediately. I called the Torro repair shop. $120 to look at my mower. I found this video and it cost me the large sum of 55 cents for a new gasket that was crack. This fix took me about 30 minutes to do. I used a twist tie wire to clean the holes out and a toothbrush to scrub the dirt. Mower is running like a champ. Thank you!!!!
My problem was up in the carb where the main jet screws into. A little carb cleaner sprayed up into where the main jet came out of fixed me up. Thanks for letting me know it was main jet.
Thank you for your Video , i was having the same problem with my TORO , i changed the Spark Plug , the Filter and the Oil , did not work , then i saw your video , gave it a try and it WORKED ! Thank You so very much !
on one of your videos i fix my toro ....thanks man!!! that's a lot...is one of ur videos that one customer had it for 1 year n it wouldn't turn on..same thing happen to me new n won't turn on.thanks 2 u I fix it n surprise my husband...thanks sir...
Thank you, this exact problem started on mine today in the middle of cutting the lawn chewing up the leaves. Pulled out 13 mm socket and it came right out sprayed everything with carb cleaner and just used a small wire to clean the jets put it back together working perfect. Appreciate the video very much
Exactly what you said, only instead of soaking it 24hrs in Coke I used carb cleaner. Took about 5 minutes I’m total, started right up and stayed started. Cheers
in Tallahassee moving my daughter into her very first house and the people who lived here before left her this exact mower doing exactly what you describe. i was able to fix it in 10 minutes thanks to your video. I’m a subscriber now!!!
I spent a few hours trying to figure this out myself, from using cabulator cleaner, ect. This worked like a charm. Spent10 minutes with your suggestion. Thanks for the video!
Thank you! thank you! thank you! good sir... You saved me a bunch of rage, stomping , cursing and most of all some cash!! Cheers for Canada Jeff!! Canadian Jeff
Thanks for the tip. Worked flawlessly on My Toro nearly same model but 7.25. Wasnt as rusty as yours (it was like new actually, but i always tend to wash my lawn mower after every use), only some kind of that was clogging it. Once removed, cleaned in some water and a tip cleaner everything worked perfectly. Youre the man!
Jeff good video I cleaned out the bowl and cleaned the jet but still the same problem so I bought a new carb and the same problem started and dies. Need your help. Steve
I did as directed. Though my main jet was completely clean, I noticed the tube from the air cleaner to the engine was disconnected. Reconnecting it resolved the problem. Remember that combustion needs air - as well as fuel and spark - to fire.
Thnk you for your videos. Would it be possible to make a video on how exactly remove the cover off? I only see two bolts that can be removed from the top. TIA
Had this exact problem - runs on starting fluid but then dies. Pulled the jet and bowl. Soaked them both in diet Coke for 2 hrs. Shot some carb cleaner thru the jet holes after, put it back together, and pulled the chord. Started right off and ran smooth as silk. Thanks for the tip.
Nice undies for sure, I have a collection of old worn out socks in a 5gal bucket I use for shop rags... thanks for the vid, great tutorial. Much needed as mine was doing the start then stopping thing.
like your style and plan on doing same with mine tomorrow------mine will only start with starting fluid so may not be the main jet issue but I will check that first. Gladly subscribed.
Thank you for the video. Had this problem today, solution in the video solved it. Was a bit surprised that it happened on 3 year old mower though. Looks like I'll be using startron going forward.
Hey buddy, just want you to know my mower is fixed! You were so right, silly me did not connect the fuel line all the way, but the carb was filthy, I cleaned it with carb cleaner and unclogged all holes.... mower runs like new!
Jeff, You're an excellent communicator and videographer! Not bad with small engines too! haha Thank you for being willing to share your expertise and many little "trade secrets" with all of us DIY'ers. It used to be that we could call a shop and get a little tip or two from them to get moving in the right direction. If we couldn't fix it, we'd go to them for the parts or service work. Nowadays, with the internet, nobody wants to share their knowledge for free anymore. Seems they're afraid they might help too much and won't get any business... It's quite the opposite however. If they aren't willing to help out, then it's hard to trust they won't take you to the cleaners if given the work. You show a confidence in your potential customer by being trustworthy in the little things like "trade secrets" and that gives people like me trust in you for the big things I can't fix. Smart way to do business in my way of thinking! Thanks for being a good guy! I've saved you as my go-to-guy for all things related to small engine repair and I'm thankful you're out there for me! Have a great weekend! May God richly bless you! Steve Rancho Murieta, CA
Hey buddy! Love your video! My dad bought a toro pull start mower, slight less HP than yours.. but now it is starting and stalling.. saw your video, and I am totally doing this.. already got the main jet off and will try the soda cleaner. Worst case, Home Depot should carry them... so much appreciative sir!
Thanks. Had the same problem - wouldn't staying running. We have the newer version of the Recycler 22 because bowl is plastic. Took it off and found the float, the pin and and float shaft sitting in the bowl. After reassembly four pull and ran fine.
