How to fix your Generation 2 Toyota Tacoma Overhead Compass and Temperature and Direction Display. Don't take it in or buy new until you check this!
8 out of 10 people have this go wrong with their unit, so it's worth a try. It's a simple ~10min fix. All you need is a Phillips Screw Driver, T10 Torx Screw Driver, Multi Meter and a small Soldering Gun.
www.amazon.ca/CHANNELLOCK-T10-Torx-Set/dp/B00YGINM5C/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=torx%2Bt10&qid=1588045478&sr=8-5&th=1
(Do not use a "big" soldering/wood burning gun. You will fry the components with that!)
Basic Soldering gun: www.amazon.ca/Soldering-Upgraded-Adjustable-Temperature-Rarlight/dp/B07RLM4M97/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1BXD18VYHGUST&keywords=soldering+gun+kit&qid=1588045214&sprefix=solereing+%2Caps%2C316&sr=8-3

Thank u so much! I`ve had my Tacoma 3 years now, no display...couldn`t even get the overhead panel down(didn`t know about the clips) I resoldered both the 51 ohm resistors(510`s - 3rd digit tells how many zero`s after first 2 digits) and IT WORKS... MAN, I LOVE THE INTERNET Thank you again!

I can't believe I waited a year for this fix! Thank you for the info. Turns out one of my resistors had simply fallen off and was loose in the plastic. Luckily I found it. The other one was soldered on extremely crooked. Clearly their PCB manufacturers did these parts rather quickly if everyone is having this same problem. Thanks again!

Great! Mine stopped working for almost a year. While it was in for servicing they wanted huge coin to replace the unit. I looked on a few Toyota forums and a few people had described what the issue could be a. I took it apart and my 510 resistors weren't off.. but the solder joints were "cold" Re-flowing the joint fixed my issue. I was PO'd that the dealer wanted so much a simple fix.. I made the video!

Just yesterday, Avondale Toyota in Phoenix, AZ quoted $843.43 to fix this. Said it was "INTERNAL FAILURE IN OVER-HEAD COMPASS/TEMP MODULE" which is probably what the vehicle diagnostics told them. After watching this, and other, videos, I am going to tackle it myself. If it still doesn't work I will be in the same boat I have been in for a year. Nothing lost, or spent! The frustrating part is that the dealership didn't even bother to try and fix it. Plug and play is their only option.

Yes, I've heard this before but that is very costly! Unfortunately, this is a known issue for Toyota and since the Tech's don't really have official training in soldering on printed circuit boards they are instructed just to replace the entire board... and the resistors may pop again (mine did) This covers the Tech and the Dealership from any warranty issues.

Did this fix a week ago for a customer (Home PC repair biz) Did not find out the part replacement was $1200 until after I completed resoldering the 510 resistor. Was good to see the display spark up after we pit it back in his truck.

My temp gauge gave out a week ago. I have 116,000 miles on her and just as you said my bottom 510 resistor was hanging down slightly once I took it apart. I solderer it back on and put it back together. I had to add a little solder to it but it works perfect!!! Thanks man. Much love in the USA!!! My Toyota Tacoma is the best vehicle I have ever own and its Toyota owners like you that help us carry on and not spend a fortune. you sir are my hero. take care.

It worked like a charm, twice! I've owned the truck for six years and the temp./cmpass this was dark. After about three year I started googling tacoma thermometer compass and found that I already had one- it was just dead. I fixed it then, and again now three years later. Thanks!!!

Thanks Mike - We were driving home tonight and the temp gauge/compass was dead. My heart sank imagining the 4 figure cost to get this replaced. Yours was the second vidoe I saw on RU-vid. When I opened up my gauge one of the 510 resistors was tombstoned with a tiny thread of solder connecting it. I reflowed the joints on both resistors and it's fixed the temp gauge! Thanks Mate - really appreciate your video!

Great news! I haven't look at the circuit closely but I suspect those resistors are part of the power supply circuit. They appear to get VERY hot and can't dissipate the heat due to being undersized and not in a ventilated area. They get so hot they crack/blow/pop off. For a permanent fix I would swap it out for larger resistors.

Did the repair after watching this video. I ordered the soldering gun for 15.00 from Amazon...total time from taking out first screw, soldering, to putting in last screw prob 45 minutes and that is taking my time because it was my first time soldering. If it is out this almost certainly will fix it. Thanks for the video.

Thanks a lot for this video. I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 quad cab. The temp/compass indicator stopped working over a year ago. I didn't want to pay an excessive amount to have it repaired so I just lived with the inconvenience until I found your video. I decided to give it a try. I found that one of my 510 resistors was missing and the one next to it attached by only one end (the same ones in your video). Couldn't find a reasonably priced flat plate resistor so I ordered 51 ohm barrel type resistors that have wires on both ends. Soldered them in place and put it back together. It works great!!! The only down side is that the smallest package of 51 ohm resistors I could get via Amazon contained 100 for about $4. Now, I have 98 extras.

Hey Mike, I could not even begin to remove the instrument, never mind fixing it, without your video. One of my resistors completely fell off. Luckily I did find it, soldered it and working again. I wonder why Toyota makes it so cheap, maybe helping out the dealership? Its a shame on big corporations! But thank God we have people like you wiling to share your knowledge, and talent. This is the way to fight back. Thanks so much,as a retired person I could never afford to fix it. Thank you Mike May God help you every step of the way. John Balasa from Virginia

GREAT instructions, easy to do!!! Saved me time and money, many thanks!.. The display board I pulled out had a resistor labeled 510 on the bottom right, the one right above it was white with no numbers. It appeared to be the one that was loose on one side, but to be safe I soldered both sides of both resistors, plugged it back in an worked perfectly...tks agains

I can't solder worth shit, and I just fixed my compass in less than 15 minutes. Used my multimeter, which showed two reading 0 ohms, 2 "510" resistors with cracked solder connections was the culprit. It works! I floated a little extra solder at the ends of the 510 resistors. Don't you love when a 5 cent part takes down something like this. I assume this means the resistor gets hot though. One of my resistors as soon as I heated the other end just fell off, there was hardly and solder on that end. so hopefully more about shitty soldering and not about a perpetual problem.. I like knowing the outside temp!

This is a good video. I've had the same problem and have fixed it. Those "510" ohm resistors get too hot. I am thinking about replacing for "barrel" type resistors next time. Seems other manufacturers such as Ford use the same type or brand of LED display and have the same issue. They should engineer these better. It's still cheaper to fix yourself than going to the dealer, at least on the display issue.

Well, the dealership typically wants to replace the entire unit since it easier, faster, they know the new piece works....and yes, they make more money. It's in their best interest to do so since the Mechanics aren't electronic technicians are probably not "qualified" by Toyota to solder parts. If it was still under warranty I would expect a new board and not just a soldered part. That being said, that's why I did the video. It's an easy fix, you can do it yourself for FREE! :)
