In today's video, I am going to be helping you guys out with your warped vinyl with a quick and easy fix to get them flat and playable once more!
Oven settings: 80 degrees Celsius. 175 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes
Equipment: 2 sheets of glass bigger than the record. (glass chopping boards work well such as these www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Clear-G...)
Something big and heavy, I used a big off cut of wood but a couple of large books will do just as well.
An oven to heat the record. (Preheat oven to 80 degrees Celsius. 175 degrees Fahrenheit )
Something to clean the Record with.
And Finally, the bent record its self.

Totally worked for me. My copy of Joy Division Unknown Pleasures had been given to me by a friend that left it in her car for 4 months. It had a nasty bit of warping right in one spot on the edge. I believe it's 180 gram copy. If you have a cheap thin record then maybe 10 minutes might be too long but for this one it worked perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I've straightened them using solar power. I used two pieces of thicker glass. The top piece supplied the weight. A few minutes were needed. I carefully carried the glass and LP into the house to cool. After a while, I took off the top piece of glass. The previously warped LP was now perfectly flat. It played fine.

Many thanks for making this video. I've just tried this with a warped record of my own, which was so warped the needle jumped up and down on the first track of both sides, skipping repeatedly, but now it's flat enough to play through just fine after doing your glass chopping board method. I put a dumbell weight on the top board for an hour after heating as I didn't have a block of wood, which served just fine as a substitute.

I've done this and melted one record, the times where the record hasn't melted the record remained warped. It seems there's a very fine line between having enough heat to actually make the vinyl pliable and not enough that it just remains the same shape once cooled. Very fine line that's very tricky to find and can be very costly to.
@demonovationable

I used some glass shelves from IKEA made for the Kallax, they are heavy and fit a 12 inch record perfectly. I had a 10" record that was badly warped from being left in the car. I put it between the glass and into a 175 degree oven (the lowest my oven can go) for about 10 minutes. I then took it out and put something heavy on top and let it cool for a few hours. It didn't work. I did it again but this time left it in for 45 minutes. After cooling the record still has a *slight* warp, but plays perfectly. No melted grooves, no issues with the stylus tracking. This method works perfectly. Plus, if a record is so warped it doesn't play properly, what do you have to lose?

This nearly worked! The problem I had was that, even though there was only a tiny amount of the record poking out of the chopping board (2mm), that edge went crinkly and the record ended up no good. The rest of the record looked really good. So the answer, for me anyway, is to make sure that the glass completely covers the record, preferably with a bit to spare. Since writing this I've tried it on 4 more records. They're all now write-offs, so I'd steer clear.

I use a record cleaner that vacumes the grooves out. I use 8, 2 inch binder clips around the glass. All pvc formulations are different so the correct time and heat is very hard to get. And letting it cool slowly and completely I believe helps. I've had about 60 to 70% success. Some have gotten flat and still played and sounded great, but some developed some minor pops n ticks. May have been dirt but under micro. looks like very, very, slight vinyl damage. If unplayable to start, nothing to lose, otherwise tough choice. Me being a reformed perfectionist it's tougher.

You have to be extremely careful. If you leave it too long in heat source, grooves start shrinking, making it useless. Once the vinyl softens, it has to be removed from heat source immediately. I do the same thing with 2 pieces of glass I had tailor made for this purpose, but I use direct sunlight on a hot day. With this method I can monitor it constantly, to check when it's soft, just by removing the top glass sheet. Once it's soft, I put the sheet back on and move it to a cold area

Just wondering where you got the glass from? I cant seem to find it anywhere online or in store
@JaidonRymer

I used glass chopping boards like these: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Clear-Glass-Chopping-Board-Workspace-Protect-Cutting-Worktop-Kitchen-Saver-/252384727910

Thanks for the heads up Jaidon. I think im going to try yr experiment. I will have the glass cut by our local Glazier. How thick glass do y think I should tell him to cut and also do you think i need those 4 plastic things in the corner of the glass? - happy listening from Denmark.
@JaidonRymer
@JaidonRymer 7 лет назад
The glass should be a minimum of a few mil thick, and them plastic things on the corners are just because I used chopping boards, they have no effect on the process that's why they are all facing outwards as not to lift the glass off the record. Hope this is of help :)

Did you mean 80 degrees Farenheight? I now have something resembling a very worn, black disc brake rotor.

In the middle of the Owen? Isn't that a hot air Owen? Beacause if it is, then the placement isn't critical.

Even if this method DOES possibly ruin an LP if not carried out right, the LP, if warped pretty bad like his was, well what do you have to lose? If it is slightly warped then it might be wise to leave well enough alone but in cases where something is already damaged and not usable, attempting to salvage will not mess it up any worse than it already is.

Hi there, nice video. I am missing couple of info: what’s the temperature of the record, weight of it, the temperature of the oven (C/F), unfortunately we haven’t been able to hear the sound before and after… all good! Toni

I tried this with a u shaped wrap covering an I inch of the record and it flattened it but the record was no longer round. Maybe it works better on thinner vinyl and wraps over the entire record?
@JaidonRymer
@JaidonRymer 7 лет назад
For a record to warp in only one section means it has managed to be stretched, so that means when you flatten it the stretched section doesn't always un-stretch causing the miss shaping to happen. So it works best on warps that are caused by the whole record bending then it has not stretched.
