Just thinking... Wouldn't it be better to use a wooden dowel instead of a metal bolt since metal tends to decay the wood or enlarge the hole in time as wood changes with climate. This way a wooden dowel with glue will keep everything in place.

This is wrong. Use a wood glue and a dowel would be plenty. And another advice: get some clamps.

I suggest you put something like wood betwen wire and chair wood so you not get wire mark on it.
