My understanding was always that it's not that it goes through the paper, it can just get into the water at the sides. Which can then maybe get into other paints, especially if you like to use the palette for getting water on your brush too... But it's such a small amount I really don't see how it would be an issue tbh

Re: mold - lightly spray hydrogen peroxide (the type used for first aid) on both sides of the sponge. This comes from an actual chemist; from Mrs. Masterson of Masterson Art; from years of using hydrogen peroxide on a wet palette and having no mold issues (had them prior to).

The claim companies make about their wet palette sponge being mould resistant or proof is so bizarre. You've got this material, with a massive surface area due to all of the air holes through out it, that is filled with water and left in a dark place. That is just waiting for mould growth. The only way I think that it wouldn't grow mold is if it were a silver or copper foam.

For high fluid paints like contrast and also for my metallics I use beer bottle tops placed inside the wet palette down one edge. They stay perfectly reusable just like the paint on the paper and allows you to make washes and thinned down contrast paints with mediums so easily.

Great video! One thing that you can add that I learned from Lyla Mev about wet pallets- get 4 old pennies from 1982 or earlier (not sure if you chaps across the pond have copper coins readily available. Old pennies are copper...new ones are mostly nickle, I think) and assuming that you already put 4 under your sponge in the corners or copper wire like you said- and then put the 4 in the corners on TOP of your pallet paper. They weigh the paper down enough to keep the edges from rolling up over time and provide another layer of antimicrobial protection. Works great at keeping your pallet flatter!

Great tips here. I was one of the fools who bought into both the "anti-fungal" and "everlasting" marketing spiels on the Redgrass palette. I left my palette sealed up with paint inside for a good few weeks, expecting it to at least be workable when I came back to it, but instead found it rife with mold. Now, when I know I'm finished with a session, I just leave the lid off and let it dry up. Reconstitute the sponge with fresh water and fresh paper next time.
@thestateofplay2023

Additional downside of (homemade) wet palettes: The problem I found with the homemade wet palette I started with is that if the paper doesn't sit perfectly flat on the sponge, then any spots without sponge contact will create a spot where the paper wrinkles (because part of it is wet and part is dry, and that creates tension within the paper fibers), and then the wrinkle stiffens (because paper that's been wetted and then dried out has a different pattern of fiber in, where the fiber draws together and becomes sort of cemented as pockets of water in it evaporate), and this causes the wrinkle to spread, which causes a larger discontinuity between paper and sponge, and which causes more wrinkles, which also stiffen, and then pretty soon I have a weird corrugated sheet of semi-stiff parchment paper that will not lie flat on the sponge and doesn't work as a paint palette at all. Switching to a dedicated wet palette with a single sponge fitted to lie flat inside it, and then making sure to cut my paper so it covers the sponge as completely as possible while lying completely flat on it, with no wrinkles and no overhang, fixed this issue. This is something to consider if you're making a homemade wet palette from e.g. one of those sandwich containers with the rounded edges and some kitchen sponge, as certain other youtube videos have recommended.
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 Год назад
You are absolutely correct. And that was a well put together comment! Those wavy sponges you can buy don’t work so well. But the U.K. Sainbury’s sponges with the “square” pattern hold onto the paper a bit like suckers on an octopus. I’ve found more water helps so the paper is sitting on a layer of water rather than the sponge.

I have been using wet palettes for better than 20 years now and I have come to prefer paper towels (kitchen roll in the UK?) to sponges. They work just as well, and when the aliens start to invade the palette or the paper is covered, you can throw away everything at once. Then clean the wet palette thoroughly (I prefer to use the dishwasher) and start over with all new stuff. I also use a protractor (chosen because of its size and straight plastic edge, you could use anything that fits) to scrape the paper and make sure there are no bubbles between the baking parchment and "sponge". another advantage of this for me is that I use white paper towels so that I can see better what's actually on my palette than I could if I were to use something like Masterson's yellow sponge.

Re: Mold - I've got a lamp with UV light, and natural light. When I'm done painting I switch to the UV setting and leave it shining on my palette. If there's some paint I'm stepping away from then I put a shot glass over the paint to keep it wet, then turn on the UV. The 'sponge' (I use cheesecloth style disposable wipes) lasts for months before it gets slimy. I think it's an Ottlite brand lamp. Oh, and well water is more active than city water. If you're on a well then boil, or use bottled or distilled (which is cheaper in my area anyway).

i have 3 of those ferrero rocher wet palettes on the go at all times 😆. i would modify that slightly tho, i think its better if you use 3 of those sponges, cut the 4th one up and layer it around the edges so the sponge surface takes up the entire box space, then put about 5 sheets of kitchen roll on top of the sponges making a complete coating. then put the baking paper on top of the kitchen roll surface. it holds wayyyyyy more water with 3 sponges so it will stay consistently wet far better than any of those brand made wet palettes and the kitchen roll will help slow/regulate the flow of water between the soaking sponges and the paper so you can have a small lake under there and it wont get too wet on the actual surface. i genuinely think a ferrero rocher wet palette like that is far better than any branded one ive tried. my ex had 3 different ones that were all pretty much the same but the sponge is too thin they dry out too quickly and when theyre wet theyre way too wet because the sponge is just floating on water, i thought they were all really sub par.

Awesome vid because of the use of intelligence, experience and common sense Stole my son's tear off tracing paper pad from "the works" and now I don't have to peer at baking paper in supermarkets, only to find they don't have any unwaxed. If I'm leaving the palette overnight it goes in the fridge, tipped about 20 degrees so the condensation runs down the lid and can't lurk waiting to drip. I use copper or brass wire/rod to stop mould and hit it with boiling water whenever I clean it. (Mine's microwavable tupperware so it has a lid vent) I don't mix washes on the palette, I get the hue right on the palette and then lift the mixed paint with a plastic palette knife and wash it into a small well palette for dilution. If I'm still using them then the well palette gets plastic wrapped and goes in the fridge too. (I always cover my well palettes with foil before I start so there's no cleaning up - I use a lot of oils too)

I made my own wet palette, but my paper keeps curling up a bit so it doesn't make contact with the wet sponge. Any tips for this problem?
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 2 дня назад
Keep pushing it back down. I used an old credit card to smooth it down. Once it’s fully wet on the underside it should stay down. If it’s still not sticking then you might not have put enough water on the sponge or stuff underneath.

I have two wet palettes, the everlasting and one cheap chinese brand thing. I like the latter more. For one, the sponge is thicker and thus doesn't dry out as fast. Also it has 2 different kinds of paper: hydrophilic and hydrophobic. For colors you can properly use directly from the bottle the everlasting is really fine, but if you want to mix the hydrophobic paper of the cheap chinese palette is way better. In long sessions I will use both, so I can have two color palettes without worrying about contamination. I always use distilled water, mostly because my tap water is really hard and influences the paints and cleanliness of the brushes. If you buy it at a hardware store it's not that expensive and if you own a car you most likely will have some standing around anyway.

Most stuff is fine on a wet palette, just change your paper more often and change your sponge every so often. Also remember to hydrate your wet palette for the task you are doing currently. More moisture is better for glazing, less for base coating.
@thestateofplay2023

Paints consist of ink - thing carrying a colour, pigment - giving paint opacity (sometimes also a color), medium - keeping pigment evenly distributed , and solvent (water for acrylics) which keeps everything liquid. Wet palette can only resupply paint with solvent. If medium evaporates or goes to wet palet via osmosis and is replaced by solvent, pigment will separate from the mix and you will get chalky and grainy paint. So wet palet is excellent tool making painting session much more enjoyable but they are not holy grail which will make your paint stay perfect indefinitely.

I’m late to this video. I know. As to why distilled water over tap water. Distilled water doesn’t have the minerals and chemicals that tap water does. If you like stuff like chlorine, fluoride, lime scale in your wet pallet and in your paints… use the tap water. If you want to keep your paints as you’d like them to be… go with distilled. The choice is yours. I’d go with the distilled personally.

A wet palette isn't revolutionary, it's a tool designed to make acrylic paint act like oil paint. Just cut out the middle man and go to oil paints. You'll save massive amounts of money since they are cheaper and better quality, and require less space since you can mix any color that you'd want because they are all one to two pigment paints. Plus, you can always make your own with pigments and linseed oil. Ask any professional painter which is better to paint with, acrylic or oil, and every single one of them will say oil. Acrylic paint was only chosen by hobby stores because they could sell acrylic paint to kids.
@thestateofplay2023

Well, that and you can paint a model with acrylic and play a game with it in less than 20 minutes. I use both oil and acrylic. I love both for different reasons. But a video that says, “put oil on a palette and use. The end”, probably wouldn’t go far on RU-vid. 🤣🤣🤣

Neither acrylics nor oils are strictly better (I use both). (Enamels are also useful for their own purposes.) There are things you can do with acrylics that are difficult with oils and vice versa. Wet palettes address one of the disadvantages of acrylics in a way that is both simple and effective. None of which is to say that you should only use acrylics ... or use acrylics at all. Use what works well for you. As I will.
