How to Fix an Adventure Kings Firepit! | Get more Airflow in a 4WD Supacentre Firepit!

Adventure Kings Fire Pit - geni.us/kings-fire-pit
EzySpit Fire Pit - ebay.us/nsMWQO
Coast Steel Fire Pit - geni.us/coast-steel-600-fire
These sliding firepits all seem to have the same problem!
Whether it's an Adventure Kings one or another brand they seem to struggle when it comes to getting any good airflow into the fire.
This one little mod should fix the problem and get that fire roaring like it should and burn efficiently so you don't get choked out by smoke!
The fire pit I used for this was my old Adventure Kings model from 4WD Supacentre, not a bad unit by any stretch but it definitely could have had a bit more planning on the design.

G'day Guys, rather than drilling holes in my kings fire pit I bent up two wedges out of a strip of 3 x 25 by about 150 mm long, basically the strip was bent in half to make the wedge and put them into the outer sides of the pit. By either pushing them in or out to "adjust" the side plate walls together or apart more I'm able to regulate the amount of air needed. You can use anything to jam the plates apart. I started with bits of wood.
@davidforster8707
@davidforster8707 3 года назад
I've done the bottom holes but I've also got holes accross the top for a "gasifier" effect. Approx 8mm below the longer side handles drill approx 25, 8mm holes in a line from one side to the other. Get a fire going and get the bastard red hot. From the outside place a screwdriver in these holes and push down. This will pull the top of the holes out to catch air moving up the sides of the "V" forcing it into the smoke. This clean air not only dilutes the smoke but can sometimes ignite the smoke creating a 2nd burn or gasification, greatly reducing the smoke. Search gasifier camp stoves for more clarity.

That’s awesome David, definitely going to try this sometime. I’ve seen a few of these styles being built over in the US and they look unreal.
@alex49159
@alex49159 3 года назад
TBH, I still don’t get it. So you cut a line of smaller holes into the other plates, then put a screwdriver in there and then push down? How does that accomplish anything? Can you paraphrase perhaps 😂
@davidforster8707
@davidforster8707 3 года назад
@@alex49159 Doing this turns simple round holes into something like you'd find on a cheese grater - except upside down with the protrusion at the top of the hole. (Turn a cheese grater upside down to get an idea) Screwdriver pushes the bottom of hole (4 O'clock - 7 O'clock) in, while at the same time pulling the top half of the hole (10 O'clock - 2 O'clock) out to catch rising clean air. I don't know how else to explain it.
@alex49159
@alex49159 3 года назад
@@davidforster8707 Aah, I get you now. So you mean to heat the fire pit up in order to make the metal malleable and then "turn" each of the previously drilled holes to create a upward funnel in each. When I read your earlier comment at first, I mistakenly thought you meant to do this each time you want to make a fire haha. Thanks mate!

I just did mine today, sliced the sides with grinder 60mm from the bottom and drillet two 10mm wholes on each of other two sides. Got myself a Fireproof tarp 50mmx50mm for under it so can be used in campground that alow Fire pit only. Good video, really herpes me with this project.

Yeah but one slight prob is the ash build up slowing airflow eventually, but a couple of kicks drops the ash out onto a steel plate on the ground. For a supposed new functioning product, it suck that we have to go to these extremes. I dont camp heaps so its ok for me. If i went away for a few weeks id def invest in that Darche one.

That is awesome mate. I watched your previous video comparison and ole-smokey (aka the kings brand firepit) was incredibly apparent how bad it was due to lack of air flow. I am yet to buy one, but making some basic mods like this is fine by me. It will improve the bang-for-buck price easily. And I like the idea of the complete flat pack models. I just cannot afford a top of the line Darche as you previously showcased!
@OutNAboutAustralia

That’s it mate, when you can’t justify buying the top of the range at least you can make a cheaper model suit your needs! Check out some of the other models in the description that already have airflow in mind.

Hi mate I did the same drilling M16 holds x 5 on each side. Then cut two 20mm. Strip out 30mm in from the side walls. On the bottom of the each plate. To allow the ash to drop throw to the ground. As the ash builds up under your pit just scrap in a way. With a stick or poker. To keep the air flow. You well get the pit glowing hot. You will burn a bit more wood. But lot warmer I was using two rocks to Jam in between to plates at the bottom. To do the same thing.

Hey Mate, if you dont want to cut it up, try puting two baking cooling racks on the sides. You know the ones from woolies your mum would have put your Ansac cookies on? It will lift the fire off the metal and you wont have hot embers dropping thru. Jb.

Kings whole premise when marketing this fire pit was the ability to have a camp fire anywhere, especially locations that did not allow fires on the ground. This mod now voids that premise with hot embers and coal being allowed to fall out of the fire pit and onto the ground. After watching this vid i can now see kings did not put a lot of thought into the design nor did they test it thoroughly considering the customer has to modify it immediately after purchase. They could have cut out vents and welded in fine mesh to catch hot embers if they knew anything about camping and camp fires. This vid has thankfully steered me away from this fire pit.

their folding firepit seems to be the ticket mate. Thats what i'm likely going to be getting, comes with a base plate, good ventilation and folds away when not in use... can also get the grill plate for it to pop some snags on.
