To force your macOS system to use an external (USB) Bluetooth controller instead of the internal one, open Terminal and type:
sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior=always
then type your password and reboot.
To revert to the default macOS behavior, execute:
sudo nvram -d bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior
