Hi Great Tips. They also make Clips that you slide in on each side of the outside of the Box. They are longer than the Box, so you feed one end in first and adjust it up to where each end is behind the Drywall. Then you bend it over inside the Box on each side. This prevents the Box itself from sliding out of the Sheetrock. That’s more for a loose Box though, not the Screw Problem. On a Screw that is stripped out, if you don’t have a bigger Screw, stick a Toothpick in the Hole and break it off even with the Front. The Screw will go in Tight then. You covered the Broken off Screw Backing very well.

The toothpick trick worked for me. I had to super glue it into the hole because the hole has no back. So the first toothpick got pushed out the back and fell behind. If you need to break the toothpick, I suggest breaking the back end, so you'll have the taper end facing you. The screw bites easier into the taper. Thank you for the idea!

Great video.. Where I'm living (Mexico), the plastic boxes are used in embedded concrete block walls or installed after the wall using only mortar forced into the oversized hole (no fasteners). Wiring is typically run in flexible or corrugated plastic tubing. Very common to find these screw bosses broken due to people using oversized screws. I don't know if the Box Doctor will fit in there without deforming the box, but I ordered a set and we'll see. Thanks for showing a product I haven't seen before.

Thanks for the tips. I have a couple of loose outlets i need to address. AS for the clip option, I like the G clip option better because the clip has a hole deformed to mimic a threaded hole and will be more reliable and durable in the long run. It is like the Tinnerman clips.

I had to replace a switch and the original contractor had used locktite on the switches mount screws. One of them snapped off inside to box. Long story short, I used a heat gun and a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the remaining quarter of the screw out of the box. And yes I ended up using a sheet metal screw to hold the new switch in place.

Great video. I’ve used all of these at one time or another except the box doctor. I wonder how long it would last in a high traffic box, such as vacuum cleaner or hair dryer. I have mounted even metal boxes with screws into the stud. The only issue I’ve run into was with clearance for the screws, especially with GFCI.

That last option might just solve a problem I've encountered. When I set the outlet boxes on one wall of my kitchen I was expecting we would tile over the wall there, so I left them hanging out enough for the tile and mastic behind the tile. Plans change, so now I need to make those boxes flush with the wall without destroying the surrounding drywall. This video gave me a few ideas on how to do that. The small hacksaw and that last box you showed would do the trick for those four boxes.

Sometimes for all the headaches, and the cost, it's just easier to replace the box. Also if you have electrical wires coming into there there's a good chance that it is stapled right below the box and that's going to make life very interesting as well

Are those clips available for ceiling light boxes? The screw moldings for the fixture cracked and won’t hold a screw. The box is original construction, nailed to a rafter.

Licensed pros-electricians, plumbers, etc.-sometimes express disdain, even contempt, for the advice found on DIY sites. I think this video provides a good example of what sometimes burns their grits. I find the advice on your site to be excellent and helpful most of the time, but suggesting that a drywall screw is an acceptable substitute for a machine screw meant for a UL-approved electrical box is just wrong. First, it's a code violation, which means any inspector worth his/her salt won't approve the work. The code says, more or less, that only screws meant for use in an electrical box can be used in an electrical box. Second, drywall screws are weaker than the stainless-steel screws used in electrical boxes; they break easily. Third, drywall screws can strip the threads or damage an electrical box. Fourth, stainless-steel screws LOOK a hell of a lot better and more professional than drywall screws. I had some electrical work done by a contractor years ago. Either he or one of his workers used drywall screws in one of my electrical boxes. I didn't notice until years later. Replaced the screws, but I'll never trust or use that SOB again. I wouldn't trust him to build a dog house.

Another professional already commented. To use a standard drywall screw or any screw not recommended by the box manufacturer is a code violation. You may be trying to help DIY,ers, however to suggest a code violation is wrong and could cost your viewers more money than the cost to fix it correctly.
