Let’s talk about how to get rid of bunions. Bunions can become inflamed and tender, affecting your ability to walk and exercise. Bunions can even lead to knee pain or hip pain.
Top causes of bunions:
• Your shoes don’t fit correctly
• You have flat feet
• You have ankle mobility issues
How to get rid of bunions:
1. Get shoes and socks that aren’t too tight around your toes
2. Use silicone toe spreaders
3. Do certain exercises
The best exercises for bunions:
1. Sit in a chair and bring one knee up with your arm. Then, move your foot in a complete circle as if you’re trying to draw a circle with your toes. Do ten rotations clockwise with your right foot, then do ten rotations counterclockwise. Repeat this with your left foot.
2. Place a tennis ball under the mid part of the arch in your foot. Stand on the tennis ball for two minutes and then switch feet. Do this once a day.
3. Sit in a chair and raise your toes up on both feet at the same time. Start with doing this 10 times and work up to doing it 30 times. If you get a cramp, stop. Once you can do this sitting, try doing it standing while balancing yourself against a wall.
4. While sitting in a chair, lift up your toes using your calf muscles. Do this by pushing your toes into the floor and lifting your heels. Do this back and forth, working your way up to 30 repetitions. After you can do this sitting, try doing it standing, balancing yourself using a chair or the wall.
5. While sitting in a chair, rock your ankles back and forth (invert and evert your ankles), working up to doing 30 repetitions. Once you can do this sitting, try it standing.

I’ve had bunion on my right foot for about 10 years. Watched this video seems like a year ago or close. Got better fitting shoes and did all the exercises every day and sometimes several times a day. And it was getting better, but today there was a difference. Had a little crack like cracking your knuckles in my foot. No pain whatsoever associated with it. And suddenly my toe is straight, no pain, I can walk straight and fully extend my foot. It’s like a miracle. Thank you so very much. I’ll continue the exercises for sure. And I also watch all of your videos and you’ve helped me in so many ways. You’re incredible in how you’re helping others. Thanks again.

@@Sleepy_Crabe My bunion is now HUGE. The foot without the surgery looks normal. The doctor told me if I had the bunion surgery my big toe of the left foot wouldn't slant toward the other toes. Well it does now, quite a bit. Throws off my other toes. Affected my ankle big time which in turn affected my knee. My yoga teacher informed me the big toe is the stabilizer for our balance so it's also affected my posture. I have had PT and he told me I should've been in for treatment within a week of surgery. My doc told me NOT to do PT....LOL wanted to sue my surgeon but she was married to a lawyer. Waste of time anyway. I'd follow Dr. Berg's exercises religiously!!

Bunions are typically genetic foot /ankle bone structure mobility of metatarsal and ankle. My grandmother, me, daughter and niece all have it! I had it since 12! It wasn’t from wearing heels and none of us have flat feet😊 !! My daughter developed pre teen as well. I had Lapiplasty at age 57! So glad I did!!

I’ve had a bunion since I was a little kid. Became much worse and painful as I grew. I went to a podiatrist and the Dr. told me that it was genetic. Which both my parents do have. And yes, other things described in this video do enhance the bunion. I had to have surgery to have the bunion removed. For the surgery, the foot is opened up. The bunion shaved off. The big toe bone is broken, then realigned. A small metal piece is put in place on the big toe bone to keep it straight. You are obviously on conscious under surgery. Recovery is uncomfortable. But SO worth doing. Did the surgery over 5 years ago. Not one problem. Best thing I did to get rid of the pain/ bunion on my foot. It is a medical problem. My insurance paid for the surgery. I also wanted to ad; If you're think of doing the surgery for bunion removal, make sure you do a background check on the Doctor. That the Doctor is experienced in doing the surgery. I had it done here at the Cleveland Clinic from a reputable Dr. who actually specializes in bunion removals. Again, had it over 5 years ago. Not one problem.

Same. I had a sports orthopedic surgeon do my foot. Best decision. Mine is also genetic from fallen arches, over pronation and a very sharp Q angle from hip to inside of my knee. I do all kinds of exercises to strengthen the weak muscles but only surgery was going to fix my problem. Best to you.

I had stage 4 bunions on both feet before I was 30. I’ve always worn wide, comfortable shoes. I’m not impressed by fashion, I did what made my feet less painful. I’m a medical professional who was on my feet for years, narrowly sitting each shift for minutes. I was also an avid mountain climber, but had to tape my toes before each hike. Surgery was my only option as both feet were beyond what you describe here. After recovering from surgery, no more pain, or taping needed. I was non-weight bearing for 6-7 weeks. I’m 66 years old now and by far that was the best decision I’ve made to increase my quality of life. BTW, I was normal to small in build, ate clean, and always wore the correct shoes for this problem. I would be curious to see someone with an advanced bunion “cure” it by following your recommendations. I think most of your videos are helpful, but I’m very skeptical of your opinion in this case. Respectfully. Leenie

Imho one might need to look at any muscles that might be causing hip rotation. Ie tight glutes. Muscle imbalances can cause one to walk duck toed which would cause the great toe to be pushed over toward the next toe.

Very interesting! I feel that the major cause of my bunions has been my gait, I am a little bow legged and I walk with my toes pointing outward, not directly under my knees. Your case seems to be an extreme, so maybe surgery was the best option, but I think doing the exercises can only benefit us, regardless of surgery.

In my experience, consulting a podiatrist saved me. Flat feet and Ankle pronation have been the problem and this is hereditary . I have plastic orthotics in my shoes and I use toe spacers between the big toe and second toe. My podiatrist provided strengthening exercises and stretches. These measures have arrested the development of bunions. I don’t have back, hip and knee pain and my legs are straight. In addition to Dr Berg’s advice re exercises, I strongly recommend a consult with a good podiatrist first before seeing a surgeon. Correct alignment from the feet up is so important. Avoid unnecessary bunion surgery, when the biomechanics in your feet, ankles, knees, hips and your spine can be corrected through a podiatrist. Some people would not have had success with these orthotics as I have or had a bad experience with podiatrists, but it pays to do the research. I see my podiatrist annually and have been for 20 or so years. My orthotics are reviewed to see if further modifications are needed or need to be replaced . If uncorrected, progressive joint problems can develop.. which may lead to joint replacement.

Bunions are typically correlated with flat feet/flexible arch which may also be causing your knee pain. The pain at the bunion is typically from shoe pressure at the bunion. Try wearing athletic shoes with a soft mesh upper and a stiff sole and add in an arch support. Make sure you’re wearing the correct size shoe. You should have at least 1\2 inch from the end of your big toe to the end of the shoe when standing. You can also use a bunion pad to protect the bone in shoes. You can see a foot specialist for orthotics or to discuss corrective surgery. Best of luck.

Next time it broke, I took a deep breath and pulled the toe long as hard as I could then released to set, then taped it tightly to next toe for 8 weeks, no less, changing tape as needed. Never had another problem. With it, it's been 20 years. Good luck!

Hey Dr. Eric, I have to add a #4 cause: I had cancer in right leg and my sciatic nerve was removed so my foot is paralyzed (I did baffle my Docs, when I had feeling below my knee due to developing an extra nerve through years of ballet). Since my left foot compensates for the right one, I now have a huge bunion. I use a comfy toe separator and a medical foot massager, but didn't know about the exercises....thank you! (some I cannot do because a paralyzed foot does not bend, but I'm excited to try the rest!).

Altra makes excellent shoes with natural size footbox. They are also Zero-drop from heel to toe. Once I tried them I never turned back. Injinji makes toe-socks for each individual toe. I use these alone or with a pair of light darn tough socks to avoid blisters while hiking or on long walks. Take care of your feet!

Thank you for posting this video. I will be doing these exercises. I have suffered with bunions for many years. My right big toe is hallux rigidus now (I think I spelt that right) and my left big toe is becoming that too. However about 5 years ago I got orthotics from the hospital and they changed my life. I am 62 now and I am even able to run on the treadmill at the gym💖x

_Contrary to popular belief, bunions are aggravated, not caused, by shoes. The late anthropologist Margaret Meade observed many members of a South Sea island tribe had bunions, yet they had never worn shoes! They usually are the result of inherited faulty foot mechanics that put abnormal stress on the front of the foot._

I’m definitely starting these exercises tomorrow (currently 3:04 AM)! I injured my right big toe in Taekwondo as a teen and I’ve developed bunions due to the sport. My right foot was also broken in a car accident January last year. I had a “boxer’s” break in my right hand and severely fractured my calcaneus and had to have surgery. The swelling from the fracture went up into my ankle and so I believe I have nerve damage from that. My ankle still feels weak and I still can’t wear heels 😭 I think these exercises will help me strengthen the muscles that are still weak from atrophy and I hope to fix my bunions too! 🌸

My left foot is flat and I've noticed the development of a bunion so this video is very helpful. I'm going to start working on these exercises asap. I do have weak ankles and leg muscles so this will help. I'd like to recommend a brand of sock called Happy Feet that is designed to separate the toes and straighten them back out. They have helped me when I use them. I've found its hardest to separate the last two toes the most but after few minutes I feel a lot of relief. I've also found that a brand of shoe called Xero Shoes has helped me strengthen the muscles in my feet and I've gotten back a bit of my arch in the left foot. These shoes are very flexible and allow your feet to move naturally and flex.

Great video thank you! Had bunion surgery on both feet, one in August 2021 and the other the following year in February. Sadly both surgeries failed and 1 foot all the hardware broke surgeon failed to mention my foot was not fused at all which caused the hardware break. Now days I use barefoot foot shoes and vibram 5 finger shoes which I find much comfort. I also have flat feet. I will add these exercises to my daily routine. Thank you again!!

I have a bunion and high arches with painful callousness. Funny I thought I get callouses because of the high arch, since arch don’t make contact with floor, thereby putting excess pressure on fore foot. I uses the callus scraper at least twice a eeek otherwise I feel like I’m walking on nails.

Dr. Berg is a very smart, and wonderful person for what he does. But the only true living savior is Jesus Christ, he is the only true person that can give you life, he has given us all life actually. And he gave up his life so that we could have eternal life, I pray that you with understand how important this is, because there is not a single person in the world that deserves this credit more then Jesus. You will have eternal life by believing these things. God bless 💕
