How to Fix Default Cockpit Head Position in DCS World! F-15E Strike Eagle

Hey guys! Today's video is all about increasing your home cockpit ergonomics and comfort by saving a better default head position in the DCS World F-15E Strike Eagle from RAZBAM.
However, please keep in mind that this trip and trick is applicable to any and all DCS World modules, not just the F-15E Strike Eagle.
All you need to do is hit Right ALT + Numpad 0 to save your current view and then head to your Saved Games folder and you'll find the Snapview.lua file under \DCS.openbeta\Config\View file path!

I followed what you said but when I edit the value in the default view for the FOV, nothing changes. It doesn't zoom at all. I tried 80, 100 and even 200 but nothing happens. But the snapview is really helpfull. Now I don't have to mess with the trackIR.

So many DCS content creators sit WAY too far back in the cockpit. So far back that it looks distorted and stretched like your inside a tunnel or a funhouse mirror. It drives me nuts. I have the cockpit zoom bound to the left throttle wheel so I can zoom in/out with just a scroll of my pinky finger. So I can zoom into the MFD, check something out, then come right back out. Really helps with SA and fine control. The RHT ALT+ Num 0 is a great trick. Must remember that!

The part about setting your default view really helped solve a problem I had for 2 years in the Su-33. The view was stuck 90 degrees to the right, and i didn't know how to fix it until now. Thanks, Spud!

I actually think the down biased views are better in 2d I can still see the hud but I don’t have to hold a slight downward position to look at all the screens and that’s what your looking at 90% of the time In 4.5 gen aircraft

My problem is I play in is VR. Due to being tall I usually tap the lower seat switch in the cockpit. Especially in the Viper, two taps and the hud image is perfect.

Thanks, would love to see a more indepth tips and tricks video on how to calibrate trackir/smoothtrack/etc settings, as to this day still haven't been able to dial mine in very well, though suspect a video would need setting for each type of device. Also theres the positioning of camera and such that affects that plus if camera has no option to be angled etc....its such a PITA

My biggest QOL Issues I am having is my Tobii eye tracking 5 is not working right. The problem I am having is any time my head tracking is enabled, when I am in cursor mode the head tracking is in the default direction. and if i try to use my mouse my head is sniping back to center when the mouse is move any direction.

@spudknocker Wouldn't a numpad star and slash ( * / ) would do the same FOV changes without having to mess with the lua file?? And another tip - I pause the TrackIR while adjusting the view, then resetting the view by hitting numpad Enter and 5 button first. only then I find the desired view point I like and save it.

I would assume the section in the lua file sets the vertical fov, there's other games that use that as well. It's easy enough to find a calculator for it online to calculate what it'll be for a set horisontal fov depending on your monitor's aspect ratio.

thankyou soooo much. such a random video to watch as the f15 part throws me off. but the su-25 it looks to far down, so everytime i zoom in it zooms to the top of the dashboard and i have to look up.

It works well for me, but for example in the f15, as soon as I move the zoom, it returns to the default position. Even previously, having saved angle and new zoom in the lua

What I don't like about DCS keyboard layout is that some functions require pressing more than one key at the same time which will take your hands off the HOTAS. More problems if you wear a VR device and cannot see the keyboard.

My issue is when I use the zoom wheel on my throttle I get an instant zoom out to a fisheye look then it zooms in.

What I really wanna know is... how to get a static camera position inside the cockpit looking back at the pilots? Thought it might be "alternate camera" movements, but those controls don't seem to work on any F2-F11 camera angle that I can find.

you can save a snap veiw to a custom one. go into the setting>cockpit view>custom snap view for the button combo. there are vids about it too

hey, can you use Right ALT + NUM 0 to make default external cam settings too ? like f2 / f3 etc with position and zoom levels saved to the key press ??? if so, that would be VERY cool...Or does Right ALT + NUM 0 only save the Cockpit home view ? Thanks a zillion for these great chunks of INFO :)

Default should only be pilot sitting up straight and looking straight forward with just one press of the key or button.

So my default view matches, but when I zoom with the axis slider on my throttle and put it in the center detent to go to normal zoom doesn't return it back to my save setting. It actually zooms in at like 60 or 70% and then I have to keybind "normal zoom" to get it back to my default. Super annoying. Anyway how to change this?

Normal view is 96.7 FOV which matches the LUA file, but when I zoom in with the axis slider then go to center detent my "normal zoom" is at 80.0 FOV so I have to click "normal zoom" to get it back to the 96.7 FOV even though that is my default.

Does this help set the seat position as well? I fly in VR, so I don't necessarily need to mess with the zoom, but I find the aircraft seats to sit a bit too high. Would saving the default view affect that?

The procedure will work fine, the number you choose will vary depending on your displays (quantity, resolution and aspect ratio)

I’m gonna go ahead and call BS the whole video and I would advise everyone to ignore this completely. The reason is simple. ED and other companies adjust the center view in their modules so that players can get a good perspective of the most cockpit info as possible. This means ALSO trying to get the bottom MFD (or usually MPCD) within the frame of your screen, while doing minimum sacrifices in the hud and the rest of the view. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES DO PILOTS NEED TO HAVE HUD TOUCHING THE CANOPY AS THIS GUY SUGGESTS. That is a no no no no no….no… …and no… And even if that was true, which it isn’t, if you do as this guy suggests you end up having the bottom MFCD out of frame!!!!!!!! And as an extra bonus tip: Do what he says and then good luck managing to see the tankers bottom lights during air refueling. Therefore…BS! The whole video comes from someone with lack of knowledge.

Setting FOV is a personal preference. Not everyone will like the same setup. This video gives those who want a change the method to do it. That doesn't make the video any less helpful for those who want to set it up differently. Plus, display resolution, aspect ratio and quantity are variable that will affect everyone differently.
