How to Fix DVD Not Working in Windows 10 

In my experience troubleshooter is completely useless on everything.

Deleting the upper & lower filters worked for me also. Thank you!!! I am amazed Microsoft doesn’t do this automatically. Such a simple fix. I spent many many hours looking for a driver-related solution.

in 2019, they updated their "Rubbish" OS and made the troubleshoot option invisible. Microsoft and their legions are awful.

Just wanted to say thank you. My pc 'had' a dvd drive - don't use it that much but wanted it 'back' more out of principle. Your method of adding registry worked perfectly thank you.

My luck, nothing worked. But, I thought I should simply try a different SATA cable. So I unplugged the SATA cable from an additional hard drive, plugged it into the CD-ROM Drive and the drive works! So I've got the cable to blame which is strange because I've never experienced a dodgy cable. But thanks very much for your kind help buddy.

I was so FRUSTRATED that I couldn't get my work out DVDs to play in my laptop. Turns out all I had to do was run the troublshooter! Thank you so much.

None of this worked,my computer still isn’t seeing the CD rom and I just took it all apart to verify all my connections were good

Thank you so much the first 2 steps fixed my DVD drive I tested it with a CD 💿 and it worked . I thought it was broken turned out it was just faulty hardware that needed troubleshooting thank you man .

I have the same issue with an Optiarc Drive. Nothing so far has helped and I'm currently working through all the suggestions in this video. Now I'm at the RegEdit UpperFilters thing and in the folder there are neither upper nor lower filters... What should I do?

Good video! I used to have this problem back on a old computer that was on Windows 8 at the time but with the release of 8.1 never encountered it again.

those pesky upper and lower filters! thanks for this, it worked perfectly! I don't understand why this happened in the first place. It was working fine when I used it last.{whic was a while ago}! But still; why does this stupid crap keep happening!! It seems every time there's an update, something stupid happens! it's such a ball ache! Thanks for a great video. I ended up going to Device Manager and the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and found I had two of everything. I deleted the duplicates and restarted. The drive worked after the reboot. However, when I returned to the same Device, I found the duplicates where back.

Dear Britec09, thank you for making and posting this video. Question: ¿will this work to install the correct driver for an older DVD-CD drive? (I'm wanting to upgrade my 10 year old Gateway PC [AMD Phenom 9500, Vista, 3GB RAM] to a newer AMD Ryzen5-3600). I'd like to reuse the existing DVD-CD drive, (has very little use), and I have back up CD-R disks with pictures/data, & I'd still like the option of listening to music CDs while using the PC. The new gaming PCs don't come with a DVD drive, (but I'd like one). So, I'm hoping to use my old case, or, purchase one with an external slot for said DCD-CD drive. I just don't know if it's possible to reuse said DVD-CD drive, or need to purchase a new one. (Budget's tight, and reuse would help). Any comments, suggestions welcome. Thank you. God Bless. tonyd\.

Solutions: If you are using Windows 10, you will need to buy a DVD encoder since Microsoft stop including the MPEG2 license after Win8. PowerDVD is what I use. Try a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray cleaner this will help restore/preserve the usability of your optical drive's laser lens. *Check the DVD video disc you are using. Warner Brothers are putting out DVDs that do not playback on older DVD drives.* Family Matters disc have only works on my BRD drive, not my DVD.

A very big thank you from Dubai. You made my day...i was desperately trying to revive my LG One Touch GSA- 5169D which for no reason stopped working. I tried the lower filters delete option and voila it worked!! Thanks once again, as its because of you i could see the video on the DVD that i recorded many years ago of my 2 kids when they were toddlers. i have followed all the steps in your video. however when i get to the options to delete the lower or upper filters, this is not listed on my pc. therefore, i am stuck because i do not know where to go from here. it list a "LastDeleteDate"!!!! where do i go from here.

My troubleshoot options don't have a Hardware and Devices Option.....

I have a 64-bit computer so should I be picking 64 bit instead of 32? None of the solutions I've found on the internet have worked so far.

My laptop and my PC has almost the same problem. Laptop recognizes DVD-RW disks but "windows can't finish the formatting". PC has the problem that it only can format for a while and also install files to it without them going to the queue, but after a while every single DVD won't be recognized by the PC. "Insert disk in the drive E:" pops up every single time. Gotta try this tomorrow.

I'm not seeing the upper and lower filters, any ideas what else to do? I tried everything else in your video, I do not see the DVD drive in my Device Manager, or even in BIOS. I have tested the drive on another computer, and swapped out the cable.

Sometimes, this problem may be due to hardware related, and possibly a RAM malfunction. PC dedicates some RAM space for DVD/CD drive operations in its memory map. When one RAM board starts malfunctioning, the device manager gives you a PCI error (PCI is the name of the motherboard bus), but does not exactly tell you exactly where, and what is happening with the onboard RAMs. You will see no DVD drive in your device list. Make sure to remove every RAM from your motherboard, and insert two at a time until you see your CD/DVD drive in the device manager list. If you accidentally insert the first pair of malfunctioning RAMs on your motherboard, this time the ON/OFF button of your PC blinks orange with a blank screen, indicating the one or both RAM boards are bad. I found out this, spending almost the entire day today. I hope this is useful for troubleshooting :-))

My dvd driver doesn’t appear on device manager nor anywhere on windows 10. I’ve tried troubleshooting and I have tried to install the driver manually and it still won’t appear. If anyone can help that would be much appreciated :)

Windows 10 wasn't recognizing the DVD drive. The tip about using Device Manager > Action menu and, "Add Legacy Hardware," which opened the Add Hardware Wizard and used it. That worked on my system.

Mr Britec, please do a video to show how to fix windows 10 not displaying all computers on network discovery. This happens all the time, when you click on the network folder it only shows 1 or 2 computers where there should be 10, yet to can still access them by typing the network address. BTW love your videos

(01:58) Mine doesn't have that "hardware and devices" option and the first method of detecting it by using the control panel doesn't show the the device either. The device in question is a knup (kp-le300) for CD/DVD

I was trying to find out how to play PC games on Windows 10 from CD Rom discs. Like Colin McRea, Zool, Sega Rally, True Crime, Road Rash and even other games like Off Road and Freedom Fighters. Please feel free to help me!! I know how to get them to work but why does my HDD not recognise the discs? They would have worked fine on Mum’s old Windows XP PC Toshiba Celeron and my older Lenovo Windows 7 with HD graphics. Of course I did read the graphics cards compatibility on the cases and versions of Windows, and thought yeah they do work fine. But then I can’t play the games for some strange reason.

Hardware and Devices troubleshooter, which seems to have been deprecated from Windows 10. Technically, the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter hasn’t been removed entirely from the Windows 10 operating system per se. Rather, it has been “buried” or hidden within the Windows 10 v1809 or later.

My problem is that my computer see,s the game disc, installs it, but every time I click open I get a message to insert the disc now. The problem is that the disc is obviously in the external cd drive. I managed to get the game to play previously so it isn't an issue with the game itself.

Hi! I uninstalled the DVD ROM and SCAN for changes (it then got reinstalled) and had to update my manufacturer drivers (motherboard, chipset.. .etc etc), it's a DELL. NOW IT'S WORKING! ANTIKA DVD PLAYER (from AMAZON) with DELL Latitude 3500 WINDOWS 10. WORKING ++++++

I uninstalled the driver, restarted my computer and it never came back. Great.

Dell E 7250 doesn't have cd drive, bought lg external drive , but not recognized in bios or anywhere? Will adding this registry key process make it recognize by the system?

Uninstalling the SATA drivers worked. Thanks ! Of all the versions of windows I have used 10 is by far the worst. I have had fewer problems with ALL other versions of windows combined compared to Windows 10. Its "fixed" partitions that weren't damaged (and destroyed data) , changed permissions, changed partition owners, hidden files I downloaded, and lost my DVD drive. Why worry about viruses ? Windows 10 will make your computer unusable all by itself.

Regedit worked! Pretty much as you said. But I didn't have any upper or lower to delete, they weren't there. So I deleted the other files. Restarted the computer and DVD showed up. Thanks!

Brian Hello,I had a similar problem with all 5 of my windows 10 pro computers after the spring update. The drive will show up,but when you put a blank disk in windows would say file system on disk not recognized. I had to go to local services an enable Shell Hardware Detection. It was off on all 5 computers.
