Please help, my Time Machine external drive got disconnected during backup (MacBook M2), I plug it back in and it showed up but when I click Unmount it, It won't unmount because it said something is using the drive, after a long time trying I have to click Force Unmount. Now that drive won't mount on my MacBook anymore, although it still mount on my other Windows PC using Paragon APFS for Windows. And since it's APFS Windows tool can't repair it. I tried every tutorial on youtube but nothing works.

3:18 Whoooooaaa! Thanks for that tidbit of info. I have a 5TB drive that wasn't booting but the light was blinking. I decided to wait it out and after only 10 minutes of blinking, the drive appeared in disk utility. I ran first aid and everything went back to normal. The relief I feel?....priceless.

same here. using external ssds for sound libraries and (seperate drive) Time machine. Since I updated to the last Ventura, drives keep on disappearing and one is not showing up any more at all. Using usb Hub and direct connection to Mac Mini M1 2021. Really sucks!

Does this work for an APFS drive? I have this problem right now on a Glyph SSD but I'm assuming a Windows computer wouldn't read this drive to fix it since it's APFS.

This just saved me. I didn't know to wait that long while my Mac was trying to fix the issue, and I waited about 20 minutes and my 2TB external drive finally showed up and I immediately backed it up on Dropbox and I'm going to order a physical drive for a physical backup... Thank you for teaching me patience.

This didn't help, my external hhd is Mac formatted, the pc doesn't pick it up either. Tech is so fickle Jesus! I wish it would just do its job and stop going on strike. The hhd doesn't even light up.

I noticed that the drive you used was formatted in exFat. What if the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? will the PC still fix it?

Personally I’ve only found the PC to fix things if it’s formatted in exFat. I had the same question as you.

Does this work if the external drive is APFS formatted? I can't imagine it'd work if a Windows PC can't recognize APFS external dricrs formatter just for Mac. Any ideas?

My external backup drive suddenly says uninitialized. I can see it in disk utility but it doesn't fix it. I can see it on terminal but cant force mount it. Maybe i could force initialize it but dont know how. I can see it has 4tb of data and want that transferred off it. Next step is a program and then mail it in i guess if that doesn't work. Any suggestions for a program ❓❓

Yeah, and if you have TB drives ... wait ... wait .... 30 min + to auto-mount after checking it on Windows, which instantly opens them. It's just slow (retarded) on mac. Don't delete your data like some videos say.

Normal Windows File Explorer will not read a Mac OS Extended drive. ExFat allows Windows to read it

My easystore external started failing on me I think because I put all my files from final cut and logic to store on it and it was too much, next time I should just keep program files to run off my internal disk.

This is one major issue with MacOS since ages that it cannot fix the mount issue just like Windows does. Every time the disk does not mount on MacOS, I need to search looking for a Windows PC, get it scanned and resolve the issue. Recently, just to get this issue resolved, I had to install Windows on a Mac as a dual boot as I don't own a second Windows PC.

The drive could be formatted as a "mac drive" usually APFS or HFS+ which would not show up in Windows File Explorer. However, the drive should be recognized in Windows if you check "disk manager" (which can be shown by typing in the search or right-click the windows star icon and selecting disk manager) If you see it there, it means Windows cannot read it as it is a Mac format. If you don't see it there then most likely there is a problem with the drive which we can help :)

My 5TB drive usually re-mounts after 6-10 hours of continuous repair on my mac (this has happened multiple times and it is consistent). On windows, the repair tool will fix it in a couple of hours. Not sure why this huge difference but this is not what bothers me the most. What I find most annoying is the complete lack of any indication that my mac is doing something to the drive. No alert, no progress bar. Just nothing. You hear the drive working and you see the led blinking and this is the only way you know that something is happening. Not sure why apple chose this approach but it is an unnecessary and horrendous decision. All the positive user experience simply evaporates from these deliberate anti-consumer design decisions.

external portable SSD drive is not showing up on my MacBook Pro disk utility, neither on Terminal. I have used it once to transfer files and it seemed to work. It suddenly stopped transferring and my Mac went blanc. After starting it up again it didn't boot up the external drive. Any suggestions? It looks like that I physically can't open the drive.

This is exactly what happened to me! But the drive does NOT show up in Disk Utility. Not gray. It's just not there. At all. I've given up on retrieving the data. I just want to format the drive. I haven't even owned it for two months, and it's as dead as fried chicken. I can't even see it in the Terminal to format it there. It just says no drive was found. WHAT DO I DO?!!! It can't format what it can't see.

Thanks for watching. If you don't see the drive at all, make sure you can feel it power on or the disk spinning. Either way there may be an issue with the pcb/drive

@@lapfix Thank you! Turns out the drive really was dead. I couldn't save my data, but fortunately the drive itself was still under warranty so the vendor replaced it.
