If you failed to mount the disk via command, the disk is seriously corrupted. Use iBoysoft Mac Data Recovery to recover 1GB data for free: bit.ly/3lVUhtx
Thanks for the tip! IBoysoft data recovery worked for me after I scanned the disk and let it run over night. When I opened the computer in the morning the scan had completed, but amazingly the disk had mounted properly and I managed to eject it as normal, then backed it up to another hard drive.
You prolly dont care but if you're bored like me atm then you can watch all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother for the last few weeks xD
Mine said the same. I now rented the iBoysoft Data Recovery. I can see everything on the drive. I was hoping to recover my project files like libraries. Not sure until 3.6 TB of data does what ever.
Bro… did you wait about 30 to 90 mins like they said about the rescan is fixing the drive. The last method or resort would be the software he is talking about
I always see people saying things have worked for them and ive never been one of them....i cried when my HDD just stoped working......i was trying all of the methods i came across but none work.....id like to thank you for these terminal codes as i was able to bring back mt drive from the dead....im monitoring it now and will advise. WILL BE BACKING IT UP TODAY THANK YOU
Thanks, great info here. I was all ready to do the force mount, had typed out ".../Volumes/usb/" , was just about to hit enter, then a mac message pops up saying "the external drive cannot be repaired"...haha but at least it was suddenly being recognized! Was suddenly showing up on the desktop and finder. It may be that just leaving the external drive in for a while made things "wake up" a bit..?
After following your steps, when I ran the mount command, I saw the following... mount_hfs: error on mount(): error = -1. mount_hfs: Resource busy mount: /Volumes/usb failed with 1 Is there anything additional that I must do? Also, am I at risk of losing data on this drive? It has a lot of important and personal data that I don't want to lose.
Great video but if anyone is like me and still had problems with seeing your hard drive either on screen or in devices after following Gem's command process, try just simply checking the very bottom and corners of your screen! I had simply dragged my HD from the device menu and could no longer find, mount or use it. Come to find that it was actually hiding at the very bottom of my screen in the back of the Dock bar!! Simple and silly I know, but that could be the solution to someone's headache...
thank you so much i was panic like mad thinking iv lost all my files and my hard drive was broken i'm working on a album and that would have been more then 4 months of work down the drain
Hi, I've tried with this option But instead of error I'm getting this message mount_hfs: error on mount(): error = -1. mount_hfs: Resource busy What does this mean
I am using youtube for more than 10 years and I have never written a single comment. Man, I thought I have lost 2TB of videos of the last 13 years. Thank you very much.
Incredible! Thank you so much for putting this together. Here I was thinking I lost over 14 TB of data, and about to surrender and ask for a refund or replacement from WD, and I found your video. I followed the steps and although mine did not launch/mount automatically, I followed the advice of someone in the comments who said to wait 60-90 mins as it can take a while to rescan drive. Came back later and the drive had mounted and I have my files back! Amazing amazing amazing!
I got Resource Busy, so I used Disk Utility unsuccessfully. I followed your instructions again and this time it worked. The only difference is that I spelled Volume with a capital everywhere this time. Probably not the issue
If it says resource busy you need to change "hfs" in the last command. Try to change it out to "Microsoft Basic Data". if that doesn't work, when you type "diskutil list", then replace "hfs" in the final command with whatever is in front of the name of your hard drive.

I know you posted this a year ago lol, but I followed your advice and the terminal spit this out: usage: mount [-dfruvw] [-o options] [-t external_type] special node mount [-adfruvw] [-t external_type] mount [-dfruvw] special | node Do I need to do anything else, or does this mean the disk has been mounted?
For anyone who got “/Volumes/usb failed with 1”, just leave your drive plugged in for 30-90 minutes to see if it pops up. Catalina takes forever to rescan some hard drives after they’ve been improperly ejected, like mine. Hope this helps.
Hi. I got that exactly.../Volumes/usb failed with 1...Do you mean if I leave it plugged in for 30-90 minutes, it would eventually be mounted? Pls. Pls...
This is correct. It's running a repair on a corrupted volume which takes time. This "rescan", once complete, will allow the drive to resume normal operations after an hour or two, depending on the drive size.
hello, I´ve had the same problem, but found a solution... try this way: Not like in video with: sudo mount -t hfs /dev/disk2 /Volumes/usb/ My solution was to write just: sudo mount -t hfs /dev/disk2
@@ali9550 Hi, I have got following output when I tried your suggestion. usage: mount [-dfruvw] [-o options] [-t external_type] special mount_point mount [-adfruvw] [-t external_type] mount [-dfruvw] special | mount_point
This is the only RU-vid video or website that has helped me with this problem. This dude deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for this!! If this is your first time using this video, BOOKMARK IT ASAP.
I get this error : mount_hfs: error on mount(): error = -1. mount_hfs: Resource busy mount: /Volumes/USBH failed with 1 My external drive shows up in disk utility but i cant mount it no matter what., i think because i didnt properly eject it last time
Thanks SOOO much. In the end I just had to force quit FSCK_HFS in Activity Monitor. Worked like a charm. Your commenters saved my life! Many thanks all!
I seriously don’t know how to thank you.My 5TB external Drive with over 1TB of files on it wouldn’t show up. I spent over two hours watching RU-vid videos and none of them worked, except this one. You’re a life savior.
Thank you so much for this video! Unfortunately, external drives seem to have gotten much more fickle, especially if accidentally disconnected. This process has helped me to mount 20+ TB (yes TB) of hard drives-one of which I thought I was gonna have to have repaired. I've liked, saved, shared, and more. Thank you!!!

@@LukeMaximoBell1 thank you for your reply! i had "resource busy" come up, and i looked what was infront of my hard drive and mine said "Windows_NTFS" so if anyone else has the problem, try putting that instead of HFS.

Thanks for your clear instructions! Unfortunately I'm still unable to mount my HDD external drive since upgrading to Catalina (it's the highest OS I can use on my old late 2012 mac which is still running pretty well) and wondering if there might be another limiting factor related to Time Machine backups. the HSF+ format on Catalina OS. First off, First Aid in Disk Utility says it's fine, all good---suggesting the hard drive and data isn't corrupt (?), but I can't mount it all the same. Also, unlike you, there's no external drive/disk image icon on my desktop (or in Finder, of course), but I can see it in Disk Utility and Terminal (so I know my computer can access the external drive.) My external drive is formatted as an HSF+. (Terminal identifies it as and "HSF" but elsewhere it identifies it as HSF+ Extended Journal), which I've read Catalina is supposed to be able to mount and read/access (meaning HSF+, not HSF standard). However, I have Time Machine Backups on this drive (as well as other files) and I'm wondering if the problem has something to do with a that....From the reading-up I've done today, it seems that Catalina can't us APFA formatted drives to do Time Machine back-ups, but it may also have trouble reading HSF drives? FIY, I ran through all our instructions in your tutorial in Terminal and all seemed to go well, save that my drive still didn't mount; I got the exact same error you got and could overlook, but in my case. the disk image icon on the desk top didn't show up anyway. (And, as I said, I can't see the external drive icon on my desktop in any case. Attempts to mount after I ran your instructions in Terminal via Disk Utility just returned the "DiskManagement.disenter error 49153", which is where my journey today started! At this point, I might be satisfied just to be able to "read only" the file. I can sacrifice the Time Machine BUs, so long as I can can format the drive in Catalina to make new ones (sounds like there might be a conflict there) but I really need to review the rest of the files before wiping my drive clean. Sorry for this very long comment...just found your explanation very lucid and hope you might have some insight into my problem. Cheers.
This worked for me! I had to use these commands in Terminal after doing the sequence in your tutorial: diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2 diskutil eject /dev/disk2 I removed my hard drive then plugged it in after and then it worked. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video! I tried this & got the errors that's plaguing a lot of others: error = -1 resource busy failed with 1 I then tried to mount using disk utility & waiting like others suggested, that didn't work either. Lastly, I tried force quitting fsck_hfs in the activity monitor & that worked for me!
I get an error: mount_hfs: error on mount(): error = -1. mount_hfs: Invalid argument mount: /Volumes/usb failed with 1 I use Mac osx Catalina Please help!

For those who is seeing this error, i've got a solution: run "diskutil list" again, and find the IDENTIFIER for your actual hard drive. Also open your Disk Utility, and look at the actual format of your disk. For example, my disk format is "ntfs", and identifier is "disk2s1". And then run "sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/disk2s1 /Volumes/usb". (Note, you need to use the correct format after -t and the path should be end with the disk identifier). This worked for me!
@@luiscardenas9556 yeah it is, but for some reason my disk is formatted as ntfs, and I installed a software called Tuxera NTFS to make it work on Mac. It is a Toshiba hard drive.
Like most of the comments in here, I must express my most sincere gratitude for your step by step guide. I just regained access to client video files for work that I would have otherwise lost forever. Thank you so much for the helpful guide! Cheers!
For the command described starting at 2:24, I've seen a different wording described: diskutil mount followed by either the name of the drive, like USB Hard Drive or the "identifier" shown in the right column of the list after you've entered the diskutil list command, such as disk2s2 for the drive named "USB Hard Drive." Then press enter. So the command all together in this example would take the form diskutil mount disk2s2 (Press enter.) When I tried this combination, the drive didn't mount, but the command returned a hint that for a damaged drive, you can add a "readOnly" option: diskutil mount readOnly disk2s2 Unfortunately even the readOnly option did not work for me, but maybe it will for someone else? Good luck.
Hi Gemsbok! Thanks for the tutorial! We followed everything in the video, however in the end after executing the last command to mount the harddrive to the new "usb" station, nothing happened. We got the same messages as you, but nothing happened. Do you have any suggestions what we can do?
Hi- for a Raid 0 system (i have 3 ssds in raid 0 config, in one OWC thunderbay via thunderbolt connection) - what commands i must use to force mounting them? cause suddenly i am unable to mount the raid anymore - i have 6 tb with all my work there... i am ruined if i cant access it anymore - Please help!
I copied your method exactly and received all the same messages, including the last "invalid argument" message but the drive still did not mount. I tried the unmounting and mounting commands from the other links from stackexchange in comments that someone mentioned but no luck there either. Help!

To solve the problem and the easiest way, disconnect the hard drive from the Mac and put it in the laptop. The Windows system will ask you to perform Scan Repair, so press Scan Repair and wait. After completion, transfer the hard drive to the Mac. You will see the result and the problem will be finished.
Thank you for this video. I have a big promotions test that I'm studying for, and all of my study info is on my external hard drive that wouldn't mount. This video was a lifesaver! Thank you!

Nope. I get this: DiskMangement.disenter.error - but I kept the drive plugged in while I researched that, and it FINALLY worked. Maybe 20 minutes total of waiting including that error message.

Hope this helps like it helped me. diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2 diskutil eject /dev/disk2
I'd watched half a dozen other videos that ranged from changing a connection cable to simply using Disk Utility but this video solved my issue. The list command prompted the hard drive to appear in Disk Utility so I didn't have to go futher that that, but it was great to see my drive pop up there. Thank you

Has anyone tried this with a ssd formatted to APFS? I've tried to use the same method (replacing the hfs in the command line) and no luck. I noticed in the comments that some people found a solution using force quit 'FSCK_HFS' the activity monitor and i'm wondering if there's a similar action for drives formatted to APFS using that method.

hey ! can you help? when I type diskutil list and press enter and NOTHING happens on my M1. When I go close it it opens a window and says "Do you want to terminate running processes in this window?" and even if I go back and don't terminate nothing happens. I have used Diskutil command in the past with no issues. If I open Disk Utitlity it will open a spinning wheel. My external opens normally on my other Macbook. help?!?!?
If it doesn’t show and you have a lot of data, just wait several hours with the external plugged in and it could just show up normally! This has been my exp and someone else’s I believe as well. So sometimes it’s just really a matter of waiting a significant amount of time! Like just leave it plugged in and the computer on for several hours, come back, and boom there it is! InshaAllah (God-willing) 😊

nuu no luck. Still in 2020, High sierra can't mount any format external drives. 12 restarts brought them back up. after 26 years of apple, I'm ready to call them abusive if they can't mount a fricken drive like it's 1994.
after completing all these procedures, at the very last step, I get "Input/output error. next line: Mount: /Volumes/usb failed with 71". Any further tips on how to resolve this?
If there's an I/O error, it might be a hardware failure. In that case you might have to take it in for physical service and/or get a data recovery company to help you access your files if you don't have them backed up elsewhere.
I removed an SSD which was no longer booting into an aluminium enclosure. It has a thunderbolt connection and I tried everything, including this, to mount it as Disk Utilities doesn't even see the disc. Sadly it did not work but the disc in its enclosure is kind of overeating !
