I want to stay here for an hour and click on the upvote button continuously for all the money & time you just saved me. Perfect diagnosis (I only had fan speed 5) and the part fit like a champ and I've got all 5 fan speeds again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
The kit to replace the fan motor, resistor, and connector is only 82 bucks at Rock Auto. Its also OEM, not cheap junk like this. Even the OEM part shown in the video is only 33 bucks on rock auto. GM recommends you replace the motor, resistor, and connecter all at the same time, because the OEM motor draws too much power, causing the resistor to overheat and fail. the replacement kit solves the problem which causes the failure. I opted to replace all 3 at once using the kit.
Good info. Thanks. If I had to be picky, I would say that we couldn't hear the fan working in positions 1 and 2 because of your background music. I'm OK with intro and outro music, but I'd rather just hear narrative and actual sounds in how-to videos. Thanks again!
Just completed it. Worked like a champ. Thanks for the simple, straightforward video!! (2003 Sierra) Note: there is a mounting plate on my particular model that covered the resistor unit. On mine, I had to discard it but the Duralast replacement part is designed to fit without that mounting plate.
Thanks so much for the video. Changed mine out yesterday, 2003 GMC Sierra. I came back from vacation after 3weeks and drove to the store and could smell something like burning electrical. I came out of the store and everything quit, or at least I thought it did. I checked the fuse and it was ok. I did have power to the unit and the ac lights would come on but no fan. After watching your video I suspected it was the resistor because about a year ago I lost the #5 speed on the fan. Ordered the part from your link, installed it last night and everything works great now. Man I love RU-vid!! Have a Great Summer! Thanks Again!
SyndicateOG24 So this did fix speed 5 not working. Cause that’s the issue I’m having, all work but speed 5. I have a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500HD. I’m gonna go to Oriley’s tomorrow and buy it.
@@potlickerhound7262 it didn't work for me. Number 5 dont work. I already installed it so ill just leave it there. 25 dollar mistake. Oh well. Now i gotta figure out the switch.
I think the only way to check is to have a look at what the current resistor looks like. If it looks cruddy, replace it and it'll probably be back to working. If not, its probably the HVAC controller box (the dials) which is also an easy fix.
5 has a separate fuse that is a 30 amp in the engine bay while 1-4 have a 25 in the fuse panel in the cab. Might want to check that 30 in the engine bay fuse box
@@laloperez5209 Watch this persons video for sure to see where things are in the truck..In my case I pulled the fan speed blower motor resister out from under the passenger side underneath the glove compartment area to inspect it. You can see the housing for it with no problem once you know where to look. When I pulled mine out I noticed that there was some burnt/melted wiring evidence on the wiring harness for the resister and upon removing the old part from the harness I saw that the wiring harness was melted significantly on the inside where the pins went into it..specifically the pins that controlled the fan speeds that were not functioning. I bought a new wiring harness from O'rielly's Auto Parts and cut the old one out. it was easy to replace just by splicing in the new harness based on the old wires orientation. Just refer to the old harness and hook up the same way. I replaced the resister unit as well just out of caution as I figured it was likely an OEM part and bound to fail sooner than later anyway. After replacing the parts the switch that controls the fan speed works flawlessly on all speeds. Complete repair was less than a hundred bucks. Far less than having it done elsewhere I'm sure. Hope that helps.
I already knew how you replace it. I just had questions two years later when I checked it all out and only position #5 would work on fan speed. Now I'm going to replace the new two years old sensor to see if it fixes the problem. Or if I've got other issues with HVAC control panel
@@TheSundaeDrive I got it fixed, had to replace the wire harness and I replaced the resistor as well My wire harness connector was melted, so I was wondering why it wouldn’t come out lol
Thank you for this. As it would turn out, the resistor installed on my truck was the one with the large rectangular pattern. However, I went ahead and installed this one that you suggested and everything works great. Hopefully it won't burn out.
I have changed the blower motor resistor and have tried a different control panel but I still get no blower only on speed 5, could the blower motor itself be the problem
For anybody wandering speed five does not work in my 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 and the little wiring harness that comes with the kit he showed on Amazon was melted so it is still the fan speed resistor
I have owned my 2005 Chevy 2500 HD, since new now. I have replaced the Wiring Harness and Resister so many times since new, that I keep spares just in case. At all speeds eventually crap out, Anybody, have an actual fix, that they can explain, or link to. This nickel and dime issue is not prevalent on other vehicles. What was engineered wrong, is what I ask here.
Just so happened that my '04 2500 HD is experiencing the same problem. Great video, thanks for posting it. If I may say, and please don't hate me - the music in the background is distracting.
I got the part and today I will install. I have my fingers crossed. It worked. The part went in backwards. Getting the clips in and out took the time. Without this video the installation would have gone from difficult to impossible. The people who install this kind of things really earn their money.
@@TheSundaeDrive once the plastic cover around the hvac box is removed it's literally two screws in plain sight lol. This guy said it would have been impossible?
The blower has a bearing it starts to fail then starts to draw more amps. Then it start to melt the terminals and resistor. So it's important to change both blower and resistor as a pair.
Your getting outside air draft most likely. My fan quit but I can get a little air to come through when driving. Switch to recirculate and will likely quit.
Would this fix one that sometimes will blow on all speeds then sometimes only blow on 5 and then they all may work besides 5? I am not good at explaining that just trying to get it figured out while it all still works lol
I can control the fan speeds on my 2004 Silverado, but I only have hot air blowing out of the vent next to the glove box. The rest barely blow air and are the same temperature as the outside air. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks!
Just changed mine out on 2004 Chevy Silverado 3500 dually. Slightly different but your video was a great help. Thanks. My problem was incorrectly diagnosed but I changed out both.
Yo thank you so much!!! I loved the basic and simple explanation and visual guide!!! Rock auto is always the way to go!! Also. Could you help me on my ac. It hums loud. 12345 used to work and now 5 works only. Trying move the position of the air is hit or miss. Mostly miss
Question...my 06 GMC truck. Melted the fan speed dial a few years ago. This time. 1/2/3 quit working and now 4/5 speeds have quit too. Last time when the fan speed dial was replaced should the resistor module been replaced too (is that what causes the fan dial to melt?) Reason I ask is...I assume I need to replace the speed fan switch again but should I switch out the resistor too?
2006 Chevy Trailblazer. Mine would not work on fan speed 5, so I replaced this resistor a month ago and all was well. Today it stopped blowing intermittently as I clicked through the speeds. By the time I got to work, nine were working. I am going to replace the control unit entirely, as I noticed the lights were going out on it, so I suspect this is the problem. If not, I will replace the resistor again. The one I bought from Amazon had hit and miss reviews. The next (if needed) will come from rock auto.
What if fan speed 5 didn't work but 1 through 4 worked? Then 4 stopped working a year later. Now it's intermittent if any speed works at all. Is this resistor the issue? Or should I replace the resistor and motor as well?
Awesome! I Loved your video, In my case only high speed works, I already change 3 times the resistor and it still not working. Other problem I saw is when I turn on the AC in the cluster sends a message " SERVICE 4AW". Do you have any idea what could it do? Thanks
On the MY03 2500 Silverado, there are different resistors, depending on Manual/Automatic temperature control and also presence of a front compartment center console.
Mine has the wider insert- Amazon said this fits I installed it and speed 1 and 2 started working. One other issue, my fan mode is stuck in defrost I can’t get it to change. Any help?
Its a knuckle buster on a 04 ss. Just did mine and im pissed. Sliced my thumb and took off the skin on my other hand. Fyi don’t do this when its 22 degrees outside. I had no choice because i use mine for work. Frozen ass yesterday so i had no choice but to do it today. Fyi the center console is in the way of the left screw.
Ahh that stinks. It has definitely been cold! I hate it when they don't think about things being taken back apart when they design vehicles. Hope you got it all done at least!
Only my 5 worked, but this video gave me all the info to fix it. Thank you. Weird, but on the resistor itself 5mm was too big and kept slipping. 7/32 was the perfect fit. Whatevs
My resister did burn up on my 2003 chevy silverado. Only fan speed 4 out of 5 was working. I replaced it and 1,2,3 and 4 now work but 5 still does not. Also the green stick circuit board looking thing that comes out got really hot when I connected it. I was thinking since it sticks up into the air vent, that it what cools it. And because it was on and but the fan wasn't blowing, that is what made my old one burn up. Is that the case or should it not hot?
Hello i changed the resister because it wasn't working none of the speeds Now 1234 speeds works but 5 still not working is there anything that i need to do? To ge it to work
Nice video. Helped me lots. Things to consider but please remember that my left arm is only about 70%. The passenger side seat rail digs into your side as you lay in the floor board. You really have to get your head towards the firewall to see the screws that hold the shroud. The plug that is inserted into the fan is the hardest part because you can't really see how it can be released. I had to use pliers. It was easier to bolt on the new unit and even plug in the fan wire. The best thing is that it works!!
@@waynemorse4938 awesome, i actually just did it and level 5 worked for me! I wonder why yours wasn't fixed fully, did you check the fuse under the hood, HVAC FRT 30??
There are a few others that had similar issues. If you look through the comments you may find one that found a fix. Many of them had the same resistor issue.
