@Kanaba Nakamura I was once railed (Early 2000's) when I called Belkin and told them this and that about my problem. I knew computers and understood them. They treated me like an idiot, and tried to sound superior.
This problem just happened a week ago on my work computers. I didn't notice it at first because I always use my files on a separate drive. But when I started using my desktop files and tried to create a new file, there were no options. I couldn't modify and Word docs on my desktop. Every time I unticked "read only" under properties, it would go back being ticked. I hope one of these fixes work for me.
nothing is working!! I have a client that has an issue where one of the coworkers cannot save any of the work. it's all "read only" in that specific folder. i have tried everything! on the server side of things, I set "everyone" to have FULL control over everything . turned password protection off, turned off firewalls, did private network so all the computers on the LAN are in communication. no dice. I have reset ALL permissions on both her computer AND the server and still nothing . this is driving me up the wall!!
Tried this Oct 2022 on a brand new laptop with the RO issue. It made matters worse!!! Now when I right click on the desktop to open "display", it no longer finds the built in command. This extends to other functions. I think the DISM.EXE commands may be the culprit. USE WITH CARE!! Create System Restore Point!!!!
I am the administrator on this laptop, I ran your sequence and when I try to open the controlled folder access I get a pop up saying “your IT administrator has limited access to some areas of this app, and the item you tried to access is not available. Contact IT help desk for more information.” 1. How is that possible is I own this laptop? 2. How can I get to the remove read only stage? And 3. If iv ran part of this sequence and can’t complete it, will that mess up my laptop? HELP PLEASE
Hey! I tried this too (Metod 1) and it didn't work for me the first time, then I kept trying and trying. I found out that after pressing win+r key and writing cmd in the search box I DIDN'T press Ctrl+Shift+Enter. The command prompt still came up but instead of showing "c:\windows\system32> it showed "users:name" . I kept trying until I realized that the key thing was that I missed to press Ctrl+Shift+Enter after writing CMD otherwise even if Command prompt shows up it won't work. And it also need to show "c:\Windows\System32>"
when i type ... /startcomponentcleanup it says "The startcomponent cleanup option is not recognized in this context. For more information, refer to the help". What should i do?

Even using the cmd the file thing still reads as read only.... [Angry rant down below] HOW CAN A OS BE SO FUCKING RIDICULOUS LIKE THIS, THIS IS WHY PIRACY EXISTS, MY GOD...Glad I neverpayed for this shit, but I gladly buyed Windows XP and 7...man fuck Win 10/11
Nothing works. I don't even know what causes this. I've had this exact problem for years across multiple computers and have never been able to fix it. It seems to happen completely randomly. Like I said I've been seeking a fix for years and still nothing. Fuck Windows.

This problem has been fixed in Windows 11. Just go to the folder you want to share and right click it, go to properties, then advanced sharing, then permissions and give full control. I'm the only one that uses my computers, so it works for me.
Everybody bitching about windows. Yet everyone knows Linux is so much easier (faster/more stable/ secure) Just shows you how lazy everybody is that they won't install something that works.
