Solution 1: Get Rid of Any External Peripherals
• Press hard on the “Power” key to shut down your Mac.
• Disconnect all external devices except the most important ones: Mouse, keyboard and of course, the display. Likewise, get rid of the headphones, ethernet, and audio in/out cables.
• Restart your Mac and see if the problem is solved.
Solution 2: Using Disk Utility
• Press on your Mac’s power button until it shuts down.
• Start it up again by pressing in the “Command” + “R” keys.
• You’ll see “OS X Utilities” appear. Navigate to “Disk Utility” and click on it.
• Look to the left and you’ll see the list of drives in your Mac. Select the default one your macOS is installed on and select “Verify Disk”; you can find the option at the bottom right of the page.
Solution 3: Utilize Safe Boot
• Press hard on your Mac’s power button.
• Hold down on the “Shift” key and don’t let go until your Mac restarts.
• Safe Boot will thus kick into action. Press these keys “Shift” + “Command” + “V” while this is going on to view the “Verbose Mode” and the status that Safe boot is currently in.
• Wait until you see the desktop is visible again, looking just the way it was before the grey screen. From there, proceed to start your Mac from the “Apple” menu.
Solution 4: Reset the PRAM/NVRAM
Maybe some persistent settings are stored in the NVRAM. This might sometimes be caused by buggy third-party apps. Hold down “Command” + “Option” + “P” + “R” keys all together for 20 seconds.
If you followed all the steps outlined in this video, you should have fixed your grey screen issue already. We hope so.
