FAQ's:
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. Whats wrong?
A: If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would remove the key assembly and check for damage. If damage is found, replace the assembly. If no damage is found or you are unsure, try to install again. For help with the orientation, I sometimes remove another key cap, and compare the hinge clip to the one I'm trying to install. If you cant install after several tries, the key assembly is most likely damaged and needs to be replaced.
Q: The Retainer Clip is not staying down on the Keyboard.
A: If the Retainer Clip is not fitting into place, there are a few possible reasons. The Retainer Clip could be damaged and not able to fit in correctly. The Retainer Clip may not be assembled correctly or not orientated correctly. Or the the metal pins on the Keyboard are damaged or bent out of place and not able to fasten the Retainer Clip down properly.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any part of the key is damaged or broken, you will have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isnt really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.
Q: My Key Cap came off but the Retainer Clip is still attached. What do I do?
A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.

You just saved my day! A piece of chocolate found its way beside the key and it was stuck. I opened it rather carelessly with a knife and the mechanics jumped out. This worked well for all my earlier notebooks. Fortunately nothing was broken. Putting things together was not that easy. First clipping the mechanics onto the upper metal pins did not work, perhaps I bent the pins during removal or trying to press down the mechanics. But in the end I carefully lifted the lifted pins into position with a screw driver and then I could simply clip it in again. Fazit: Make sure the clips are in the right position before pressing down the mechanics.

Thank you very much for this instruction. I searched first in my own language, but the results were full of information garbage and completely on the wrong types of laptops with different keyboards. Then I decided to search in English and found your video. I bought a laptop of the same model range from a local classifieds site (used but in good condition) and after a few days my D key crumbled. It turned out that the carriage was damaged, just in the middle where both parts connect, it was broken off "mustache" (pin). I had to swap with some other key that I use the least. And there was just completely torn off the rubber key, this silicone "tubercle" (boob), and this problem had to be solved using thin double-sided tape. Now the key is pressed very tightly, but at least it works like that. After a short time, a similar problem arose with two other keys. One just falls out periodically from a light touch. Damn Lenovo engineers! The keys on this laptop are impossibly delicate and fragile. Is it because of one damaged key that it is proposed to buy and replace the entire keyboard, with disassembly of the entire laptop? Very stupid move by the company. And the very delicate plastic of the laptop case itself, scratches and crumbles like plasticine.

Thank you - this helpful video explained to me why I broke the plastic clip below the S key (i was trying to clean under it) on my Thinkpad P1 by removing it incorrectly. While replacing it with a new clip though I tried several times unsuccessfully to follow the instruction at 4:00 which is to snap the bottom holes of the clip into the bottom pins first and then the top holes into the top pins. Looking at it through a magnifying glass I realized that the top pins are hooks pointing towards the screen. So I tried it in reverse which was to hook the top holes in the clip around the top hooks and then the bottom holes quickly snapped into place.

The hinge is locked in at both the top and bottom, but the key is laying flat rather than sticking up. Is it possible the hinge can be installed upside down?
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey Год назад
No. The hinge has to be installed correctly and be assembled correctly for the key assembly to work properly. If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

my retainer clip keeps attaching to the keycap despite me taking it out and attaching it separately to the metal pins; does this mean it is broken? i have tried re-attaching it multiple times, but it is always either attached to the keycap or attached (one side being actually attached and the other being unattached, it keeps changing sides when i click on the key)

If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

I don't know if you are still checking this but I thought I'd ask for advice. I need to reinstall my space key. I can easily get the 2 metal bars positioned. The top clicks easily but the bottom only clicks to the plastic key in the middle but not at the ends. Any suggestions?

Either the hinge clip is damaged, not orientated correctly, or the metal pins on the keyboard are bent out of place and wont allow it to snap in correctly. Those are the most likely issues

Hi, thanks for the video. I was able to replace the "N" on my son's laptop. I'm now having an issue with the "N" repeating "nnnnnn..." the up-and-down action on the keep seems fine and doesn't appear to be physically sticking. This issues doesn't happen all the time and sometimes tapping the "N" will stop the problem. The key does appear to be a little more depressed than the other keys on the keyboard. Is there a way to adjust the key so this issue will stop? Thanks!

Which version of the ThinkPad is this? I have a T480 and it doesn't have this kind of keyboard (the whole keyboard comes out). I have a dirty thing underneath my "R" (QWERTY position).

Most keys are constructed the same way. The keys should be very similar to this and can be taken off the same way

So I have a lenovo Legion, key looks similar to the one on the video, my issue is that the key keeps falling off as I press it, when it comes off I can put back and it snaps into position, but then after a few taps as I type it falls off again... what can I do to fix this?

@@fazolan2943, have you fixed it yet? I have a solution that I have worked for me greatly. First, learn how to remove the key safely, including the clip that stays attached to the key itself. Next, for the key that is bad, remove it and detach it from the plastic that stays attach to it when it comes off. Then, choose another key in your keyboard that you do not use as much. For me, I chose F9. The good key that you chose remove it as well, and also detach the plastic that is attached to the key. Finally, switch those plastics that are attached to those keys and use the good one on the key that you use often, and use the bad one on the key that you chose that you don't use as much, and put the keys back together. I used this method, and I don't even use the F9 key at all, so it hasn't come off. What I do suggest though, is to practice removing it with the bad key before you remove a good key. I really hope this helps.

I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

what if the hinge clip came apart, ut there's no pin on the inner clip? :( i can get them to lay flat but they can't connect, am i hopeless? i had the key attached fairly securely earlier without this pin either, a little wonky but it worked mostly fine-thought i could fix it and get it perfect ut apparently that was a mistake... i can't get it at all now

If there is no pin for them to fit into each other again, then it may have broken off :( In that case, it would need to be replaced.

Watched the video several times even casted it to my big TV hoping to see better but cant figure it out. My - key above the + popped off by accident and I don't think its broken but I cant figure out which way the two little white plastic pieces fit...
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey 3 года назад
The Retainer Clip came apart in two? They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
