FAQ's:
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. What's wrong?
A: If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any part of your key assembly is broken, you will usually have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.laptopkeys.com/. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isnt really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

Helped a bunch! I’ve been working on assignments for hours and got caught off guard when this termite came out of nowhere and crawled underneath the rightmost enter key! I’ve only experienced insects trying to enter electronics once before so I am glad this video was clear and didn’t waste time. (btw flying ants don’t give a damn about your window screen)

Looking at these comments, you have rescued many a stressed out person, and all I can say is you did the same for ME tooooo! I only wish my Enter key's mini-bars had the little latch-hooks to secure them in place like yours has. My metal bars had straight ends that go into pockets, and it was a total BALANCING ACT to get them all in the right places. I thought I'd have to use the key LEANING until I got it into a shop, but in the end....SNAP into place - woo! Happy dance! Thank you SO much.

The 3, E, D, C, F2, and F3 keys work intermittently on my Lenova 720s-141kb (I'm typing this on one of the pcs' good days obviously), and updating the driver and uninstalling the device has also worked intermittently to get them functional again, so the issue seems to be with the keyboard itself. I bought a replacement keyboard, and while reviewing a few videos to prepare for replacing it (just my luck it's one of the keyboards Lenova decided to install with plastic rivets instead of screws), noticed that the outer clip for the FN button on the new keyboard is broken and the key has fallen off with both halves of the clips attached to its underside. All of the original keyboard buttons/clips are in good condition mechanically, so would it be easy to remove the underside clip assemblies from one of the buttons on the original keyboard, and use it to repair the broken FN key clip on the replacement keyboard?

I like the video but what do you actually replace to repair the non working key ? My left shift key only works very randomly but seems to improve the more I stay on my pc or if I try different parts of the key so I don't know if it's a hardware ore software problem.

This video shows you how to replace a key that is mechanically damaged. If your physical key is fine, there is no need to replace the parts. Thanks for the video! The space bar on my HP Spectre 360 laptop stopped working toward the outside edges but still works in the middle. If I click the outer 3/4 inches on the right side or outer 1/2 inches on the left side it does not work, but anywhere in between does work. It feels and sounds normal no matter where on the space bar I click. All other keys are normal. Do you have any suggestions?

Very good video - before I wreck my computer - here's my question. I have a Lenovo C-940 - the keyboard looks identical to the one in your video (except mine does not have the numeric keypad). My spacebar is flaky - hitting it on the left side works perfectly, but hitting it on the right side is hit-or-miss - works sometimes, doesn't work other times. Is there anything you can recommend to try to rectify this?

Sounds like a mechanical problem and not an operating system one. You may need to see if anything is damaged in there by taking the key cap off. You may need to replace the clip under the cap if its damaged.

After removing the key, I would use a old toothbrush or similar item and clean under it as well as the retainer clip with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Careful to not use too much as liquid damage can happen to keyboards :)

I have an ideapad 3, and pressing at a certain area of my laptop (around the bottom left of my spacebar) presses certain keys at once, those being (esc), ('), (g), (h), (/), (f4 - toggle microphone), (f6 - toggle trackpad) and 7 (on the numpad, which is home on numlock toggle off). I've tried cleaning those keys, and I'm wondering what I should try next. I haven't tried cleaning my spacebar but I don't understand how these certain few are pressing at once. It also only happens when my laptop is slightly angled towards the ground. Help would be extremely appreciated as I've my laptop has had this issue for a while!

ok so one of the metal clips to hold the metal bar was destroyed on the right side the thing to hook the metal bar so it has been destroyed and i tried to place my key down without that clip and the key would just go all the way down and get stuck in place and wont click any recommendations?

In order for a key assembly to work properly, all the components need to be accounted for. The missing component should be replaced. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.laptopkeys.com/. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

Hi. My keyboard had a Stuck enter key. So I carefully pried it off- however after prying it off, dusting the underneath for particulates it’s a Lenovo Ideapad y500. Following your instructions I aligned (or so I thought) the key but every time I try and press It back into place, it either won’t go. Or, it’ll stick. As far as I am aware the key-cap isn’t broken, nothing was broken off of it while loosening it. However, it just won’t align. And I’m not looking to take it to my local repair shop for them to just pop it back and charge me for the service fee.

I was interested when i found my thinkpad t480 uses a same cheap keyboard mechanism. My space bar sometimes was not able to register key. It takes me 2 hours to finally made it working...

i have kinda a new laptop and i am using remote keyboard all the time, after around half a year of using computer and not using that laptop keyboard i used space and it just stayed in... i used it maybe 100 times and now its broken. Im trying to clean the spece under the key, it helped a little but generally something is bad with that key. Damn it just stopped working from not using it ...

If the key is physically damaged or mechanically not working correctly, I would disassemble and inspect for damage. If no damage is found, I would reinstall the key assembly. If the key assembly cannot be installed correctly, then most likley its physically damaged and needs to be replaced.

So, i have a problem, my laptop is Lenovo Ideapad S340 14api (the ryzen 3), i was just casually cleaning my keycaps, until i got to the Right shift, i try assembly it, it worked, but it was crooked, i try dis-assembly and try again, but it is still crooked, so i tried looking the inside, so, the place for the metal rod was, i think a bit unstable, so the rod kinda gets crooked even tho its not bent, also if the leaning side was important, it was leaning towards the wrist rest. Please help me with this, i dont wanna tire my dad to buy a keyboard or find a computer repair shop

I wish I watched this video before I broke my shift key. But I want to know how you replace Lenovo Thinkbook G6 shift keys. They have a different mechanism. Just one big inner frame with one big outer frame (I believe it's called L81 or so). I broke the pins, so I ordered a new keyboard only to replace left shift key. I would like to see a good tutorial like this one on how to deal with those big frames, especially how you slide the screwdriver between frames and the plastic key. Because I broke the pins because outer frame was very stiff on the plastic key, there was no room to slip the screwdriver, or the frames were so glued to the key that they tend to pop up from base rather from key. at least one of the frames, and so the pins broke.

I got a new Yoga 7 Pro this Xmas and the backspace key is misaligned and turns slightly when pressed. I also have it scratching the laptops casing sometimes. The Lenovo online store doesn't help and only allows me to return the whole machine. The problem is, that it cannot be purchases any more at a similar price it is appr. 1.5 more expensive now. Should I try this myself or just keep it as it is? The keys are in metallic grey, so I won't be able to replace it with one of the same color. I could also make this be a warranty case. In that case the whole machine would need to be disassembled. I don't like this thought either

Your asking if you should try to fix the key or leave it alone? Thats up to you as its your computer lol. If its worth fixing it for you then go for it. If the risk of breaking it more is not enough to justify the attempted repair for you, then you may want to leave it alone if it works well enough.

@@nami1540 Nothing is fool proof. I still break keys from time to time. There is always a risk of breaking things with untrained people attempting DIY. Watch the video and make your own determination.

Hello, I would appreciate your advice. I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. My trackpad MOUSE works but the two mouse buttons will not respond. I've turned the trackpad on/off through SETTINGS and the F key short cuts. The pad mouse pointer turns on/off but no luck getting the right/left mouse buttons to work. I've check the SETTINGS and they are correctly checked. I've also checked drivers and everything seems to be up-to-date. purchased the machine new with Win 8 and I've updated to Win 10. I think this was an issue in Win 8. Possibly a liquid spill on the trackpad...however the pad works except for the L/R buttons. Could this be a physical issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Puzzled and frustrated. Thanks!

I have the same exact model and I am having problem regarding enter key. It is doing its work quite well even without pressing it. So I wanna ask what would be the problem with it. I contacted the customer care and they told me to replace the whole keyboard and you said if you would open and deasemble it won't perform like before.

So the shift and space key should use same hinges? The hinges on my space bar are broken, but replacement kit for space bar isn't available. If I buy the shift kit and just use the hinges from there it should work with the spacebar?

Do you have one for the CapsLk key because that's one of my keys that is very stiff and I cannot figure out what is wrong with it. The person that "fixed" it did it when I wasn't around and I don't want to mess it up any further.

A lot like the caps lock in this video. It's a Lenovo ideapad 5 laptop. It has one metal stabilizing bar on the bottom.@@PC_Monkey

@@Beemagnolia Sounds like this video should be the correct one then :) The key is stiff? Like the Hinge Clip isnt moving freely / correctly? If so, its most likely not installed correctly or damaged and cannot be installed correctly. I would disassemble the key assembly and inspect for damaged. If none is found, try to install again.

i'm trying to fix my caps lock key, but the retainer piece is different from what you're showing from the shift key. I cannot get it back to how it was originally housed, and lowkey, it's making me very annoyed. Is it supposed to be the same piece as yours? I'm using a Lenovo Edge 15 laptop, which very similar keys to what you have there.

If you cant see how to correctly attach the retainer clip, remove another key's cap. You can compare the two :)

Hi! I've watched as many of your key replacement videos as I could fine but I still can't seem to get my key on right. The retainer clips are in properly and not broken, there's nothing wrong with the key itself or the stabilizing bar. When I snap it in, the top of the key doesn't stay down. I can click and use the key but the top is loose, it sticks out and can wiggle up and down freely. I cannot for the life of me figure out why it's doing that. None of the other keys have had this problem. It's a lenovo laptop and it has two retainer clips with one stabilizer bar. Please help!

If the key does not stay in place, then its not installed properly, or its damaged, or its not orientated correctly. The trick is to find which one it is. Best thing to do is to remove another key cap and look at the still installed hinge clip. Compare that to yours to make sure its installed correctly, not damaged, and orientated correctly.

my esc and shift keys had been acting a bit weirdly so I decided to take the key cap off to see if there are any breadcrumbs Big mistake.... I managed to put back the shift, still a bit stiff, but its okay. I have major problems putting back the esc key :') I thought it would be a good idea to take one more similar key apart to be able to see how it was put together and all the pieces came off so now i have 0 clue how to put them back on I tried the way you show in your video, but my esc key's top side is going upwards could you help me?

Is the rubber thing in the middle what pushes the key back up? The reason I ask is I have an "enter" key that is sometimes staying down and not popping back up. I haven't tried taking the key off yet as I'm concerned with making things worse by breaking something (or breaking something else). Thanks to anyone who answers!

Yes. The Rubber Spring pushes the key back up after its been pressed. If the key is not coming back up, it could be a couple things. Either the Rubber Spring is damaged, or the Hinge Clip is not installed correctly or has become loose / damaged and is not allowing the Rubber Spring to do its job

My right shift key looks like it is glued to the spring button after taking my ideapad to a computer technician. The key doesn't work. I can't separate the goey glue from the shift key.

This will fix a key that is mechanically broken. If your key feels like its working correctly, then this is not a solution. If your drivers are not the issue, then perhaps the keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Ihave the same keyboard layout from levono that you do. My space key keeps pushing all the way down until it no longer clicks and it gets stuck idk what is causing it

@@bray730 If one side lifts up the Key Cap is not snapping in place to the Hinge Clip. Either the Hinge Clip is damaged or is not aligned correctly. Or one if the metal bars, if any, are getting in the way.

If they are loose they could be damaged, bent too much, or the clips on the keyboard may be bent out of shape themselves. To know for sure how they should all be aligned, you would need to disassemble another key and compare them.

I went to disassemble a T420 to change the right hinge, I removed it from another t420 that is stopped with a burnt plate! When I went to put the keyboard and turn it on, the enter and backspace keys only work with the keyboard connected to the board, but out of its position, if I put the keyboard in its position and fix it with the screw, the enter and backspace keys don't work! Bizarre!

Sounds like when the keyboard is set in place, the ribbon cable is coming lose. Is the ribbon cable fastener clip working well and undamaged? Does it secure the ribbon cable in place nice and tight?

You would have to find out why its not sticking to keyboard correctly. Either the metal pins on the keyboard are bent incorrectly or the hinge clip is damaged.

If any part of your key assembly is broken, you will usually have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.laptopkeys.com/. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there. Let me know if you would like help locating the correct replacement part.

My problem is, trying to source a replacement Shift Key on a 2017 purchased Lenovo YOGA 720 151KB. Lenovo Bulgaria don't sell spare keys and they suggested a company to contact - they came back and said they could only offer me a new keyboard at something like 150 EUROS. I'm going to find the email address for LENOVO Europe and roast them - it is ridiculous that they do not supply these replacement keys and that I need to go searching the Globe for second-hand parts. I'm sure this video will be required so I have saved it to one of my Playlists. Thank you and sorry for the rant.

Yes, keys end up being a super big pain :( Have you tried looking for a used replacement keyboard online? Ebay, Amazon, etc. You can usually get them pretty cheap and just take a key off of it

Does the key or keys feel like they are physically fine or that there is something mechanically wrong with them? Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?
