I had problems with the manual mode buttons on the transmission of my Silverado. The transmission would not shift when i pushed the buttons on the shifter, or it would shift down when i pushed it to shift up.
The transmission worked fine in Drive Mode, and even in Manual, it just wouldn't obey shifts when i pushed the button, and after disassembling the shifter boot i discovered it was most likely a false contact on the electrical parts of the shifter itself, caused by rust and corrosion inside of the shifter.
Since i caught the problem relatively early, i poured a lot of AutoZone Rust Eater penetrating oil a few times along a couple of days and it worked, now the shifter buttons work like new. If the rust has corroded the electronics too much, you may need to replace the shift lever entirely.
WD40 could work too, but AutoZone Rust Eater sounded more logical and is just what i had in hand and worked. There are many brands of Rust Removing Penetrating Oils, and most of them could work, just remember to read the label and make sure its Dielectric and safe to use on electronics.
Electronic parts cleaner could also work as well.
