How To: Fix Nissan S14 240SX Tachometer

The tachometer on my 1998 S14, like most S14s, had a mind of it's own. In this video I will show you how to fix the infamous S14 tach problem on your 240SX, 200SX, or Silvia. This problem is also found on other various Nissans of the time such as the R33 Skyline. The same procedure should work for those as well (the circuit boards are almost identical). If you have any questions leave them in the comment section below and I will try to answer them.

You're a legend! Perfect instructions, though all the pins didn't need soldering. I soldered the four joints behind the rev counter. There was no real difference in resistance or inductance and it did not work. I then soldered the pins of the screw mounting brackets on each corner and amazingly it worked! I did have to remove the dial to reset its position after the first start and corrected it whilst idling fully warm. But great to see it all in good order. Big thanks!!

Thanks, fixed! Guys make sure to check the screws at the back of the rev gauge as well. I notice mine were all loose. Tightened them up, could've also been the issue.

Seems like a common problem on Nissan's of this vintage. My Sentra had the same issue with the Speedo. Cold solder joints (or solder fatigue) ~130K miles. It would make sense to do both your speedo & tach while you have everything out. Thanks and take care,

I have a simular problem with the rev counter on my 2005 Hyundai Elantra. The needle remains at zero. My problem is that I don't know how to remove the instrument cluster. You don't perhaps have a video that shows how it is done?

For the life of me I couldn't get either light dimmer or cruise control clips out. Now I don't really need neither. Would it be an issue if I just snipped one of them to get at the cluster? Thanks

I know this might be a dumb question and you’re probably not going to reply but it’d be great if you could. My s14 has the same problem and I was just wondering what you meant by remelting the solder? Thanks

hey brother so I just pulled the cluster out so that I can turn the airbag light off for saftey. I noticed that one of the 4 screws are missing for the tach. it's labeled airbag next to it. if I replace the screw do you think it will turn the light off
@MemoryLaneGarage
@MemoryLaneGarage 8 лет назад
Maybe, I believe the screws actually complete some of the circuits on the back of the cluster. If I still had the car I'd go look but I sold it a while back. Also, you generally have to reset the SRS light if it ever comes on. I'd try just resetting the SRS before I did anything else and see if the light stays off.

will this also fix the speed too?
@MemoryLaneGarage
@MemoryLaneGarage 8 лет назад
Possibly but I doubt it. If your speedometer doesn't work then you most likely have a speed sensor issue.
