How to fix noisy, flickering volumes in Cinema4D and Redshift

It can be tricky to resolve noise issues in Redshift volumes. Recently I was working on this short render.
In my original version I found that the volumes were flickering a lot when I rendered out an image sequence.
It turns out that GI rays have a big impact on the noise in volumes and the more transparent a volume is the more prone it is to noise issues.
I had a very transparent volume in my render with a large object beneath it bouncing GI rays back into the volume. So with that in mind I adjusted my settings.
In the GI settings I set both engines to brute force and increased the brute force GI rays from 16 to 512.
This cleaned up my render and brought my noise levels down to a reasonable amount.

I had this issue as well. For me, the best fix was to apply a RS object tag to the volume, and turn off "Generates GI" and "Receives GI." It had a negligible effect on the rest of the scene and completely cleaned up the volume. But thanks much for your tip - it may be useful in other circumstances.

Really cool, was wondering if you've ever encountered the reverse; for high density vdbs to have them looking blocky with GI? I have this issue where the vdbs look blocky with GI and totally fine without. Anyway great quick tip.

*Depending on your DCC* In houdini you can drop down a "volume sample" node, and increase the sampling to remove thick denisity blocks from your render.
