How to Fix P0017 Engine Code in 6 Minutes [4 DIY Methods / Only $6.81] 

Hi Steve. I have a 3.6L Cadillac SRX 2012. The engine light is on and I'm getting error codes P0016, P0017 and P0325. The mechanic didn't do a visual inspection but he told me it is mostly due to a bad timung chain assembly. What do you think I should do? Go ahead and change the full timing set? 134k kilometers on the odo. Thanks.

I have a 09 toyota venza that had the p0016 and p0017 codes.it ran as it it was sluggish with performance issues. I replaced the OCV and the ecm and the position sensor bank 1. Now I just have the p0017 code still. It runs and drives fine now but the code p0017 will not go away,please help!!! I have the vsc,red exclamation point and trac control on my dash.

Hi steve i have a 2007 Cadillac sts 3.6 engine i started a few months ago having a cel but it went off now its been on awhile with p0017 code when ingot there car from a private dealer the oil life was high so i figured its been change then life % got low i check it it was real dark me beening crazy got my mom to stop get oil one day she got o reillys 5 30w put it in ive had car 3months it cranks fine it stalled twice the other day for the 1st time could it be inknow needs oil change could be the cheep oil in it and needing oil change cause i dont really hear any crazy noises like timing chain or maybe needs oil change and cam sensor just hoping not timing

Hi Steve, I have a 2014 Chevy equinox, I just had a timing chain put in it about 2 weeks ago and my check engine light came on the next day after it was put in and it's giving the P0017 code. Could this be something wrong from when the timing chain was put on? Or is it a new issue that has nothing to do with the timing chain?.

I believe that is the oil pump control valve. For the 2013 Chevy Malibu that valve is right on top of the oil filter

Had to replace the camshaft on mines. The reluctor ring had slipped.

They’re telling me the same thing on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra.. and they charged me $600 to give an oil change and a coil lock something or something and they said it didn’t fix the issue and gave me the car back..

And i STILL can’t figure it out.. I’m thinking it’s the intake or exhaust cam position sensor

I just had mine at the shop for a faulty crank position sensor. They also said something about correlation and I think the code was po0017. They said I need a timing chain. I am gonna try the stuff in this video and see if it helps.

@@marleymarley Thank you for your response. It's not the timing belt as it was brand new from the Subaru dealership. I'll try out the oxygen sensor and provide updates.

@marleymarley it's not the o2 sensor. I just did another oil change and rechecked the variable timing sensor and re cleaned them. The engine light was off then once the car was warmed up the check engine light came back on.

Hey guys, I had code p0017 and p0368 in a Sienna 08 I fixed it by replacing the camshaft sensor, the AutoZone brand didn’t work so I used one from the junk yard! Works like a charm

@@nondainc Currently I'm getting the codes: p0017 and p2135 (Tps) (Reduced Power). the p2135 puts the truck into reduced power mode and it becomes almost undrivable.

@@nondainc I had the P0016 AND -P0017. Now all that is on is the P0017. i have the check engine light,VSC and Trac control light on dash. It is a 2009 toyota venza V6. I have taken it to 3 seperate toyota dealerships and they seem to attemp to fix it with no sucess. MONEY PIT!!!. i have also had 3 friend mechanices replace things . At this point i have to assume it's a stretched timing chain,or a loose wire,or some solenoid that is dirty,i honestly have no idea,i spent to much money to have lights on in my car. I litteraly took it to 3 toyota dealerships. I AM BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE. i bought it for 15,000!$ Sunk 10,000$ into it within the first 6 months,and it STILL has the same error code,i am beyond frustrated,dissapointed with toyota and feel SO DEFEATED.

Kindly check if the timing is properly aligned or the condition of the reluctor is okay. Also, the harness leading to and from the Crank/Cam sensors should be inspected.

Hello, extremely low or wrong engine oil could trigger this code so oil level and condition must be good. Full of clean, correct viscosity oil is a must to prevent this code from appearing.

@@nondainc have 2007 cadiilac sts brought it in march had check engine light come on 2months later said p0017 code but light went off oil life was good now at 0% but dont think car had an oil change when i got it just maybe they reset oil life but now light is staying on so should i start with oil change and also car cut off twice in same day 1st time every doing that put cranks fine no different noises from when 1st got it

Hi Sherri, kindly check the wiring/harness (to and from the crank/cam sensors) for visible damage. Test the sensors if functioning properly, check the timing chain if aligned/properly installed or if you may have jumped few teeth. Lastly, check if you may have a bad reluctor ring.

Hello, there are numbers of causes that triggers this code so you need to do some diagnostic work to know the solution. Please inspect the camshaft and crankshaft harnesses for frayed/broken wires and repair or replace them. Check the camshaft and crankshaft patterns, this way you can identify if you have a bad sensor or a slipping tone ring. Also make sure that the timing chain/belt are correctly lined up, not loose or stretched.

@@nondainc Thank you. I checked the resistance of the new camshaft sensors, and both new ones were bad. Put old ones back in. I was trying to fix a rough idle when warm, no codes, and throwing parts at it. Changed throttle body, MAF & MAP sensors, injectors, coils, spark plugs, o2 sensors, camshaft sensors, checked the copper wire running thru the junction block when warm, double checked the BCM re: the Dielectric grease Service Bulletin, and brake booster check valve Now I have these codes c0561, c0899, c0242, and was considering new wheel bearings bc i think that’s the only way to change tone ring on this malibu; not sure yet.
