Thanks for the fantastic video. I had a problem with unreliable key presses on some keys. Sometimes the key press did not register unless pressed dead centre and with pressure. I removed the key cap, rubber button and white plastic retainer clip and using your method. Underneath I found small dirt particles which were causing the problem. I brushed the socket clean with a toothbrush. This solved the problem.

Thank you for your help taking the key and clip apart safely! My issue was that the white clip was sticking to the key and not snapping in place. After taking the key off I saw that the metal pin on the bottom left was rotated slightly counterclockwise compared to the pin on the upper left. I use my flathead to bend it to roughly match the upper pin, and the clip was then able to snap in place. I'm now able to use the key normally. This almost certainly happened because I pressed the key too hard and very often. In retrospect, my attempts to snap it back in place by pushing down on it really hard only made it worse.

Great video, appreciate you walking through the steps. I'm still having trouble getting the outer key back on unfortunately. One thing that was different was that when I removed the key the plastic thing that's also removed came apart as two separate pieces. I thought it broke since I didn't see it in the video, but I noticed there is a small notch half way up both sides of the larger piece where the smaller center piece can be inserted. I think I inserted it correctly based on removing & inspecting another key, and also based on the fact that the plastic snapped into place as you showed. But yeah, when I put the key in the center and press down it just doesn't click or anything.
@bellini9374

I realized I placed the plastic part the wrong side down. The key now somewhat snaps back on but it's a bit crooked and not flat on. Will see if I can fix it.

I spilled coffee on my Dell Xps keyboard and now my BACK button doesnt work, I took it apart before I saw your video. I think I might have break it already. Can I send you pictures of what it looks like?
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey 5 месяцев назад
You can post a video to your own channel and then message me back here. I can then view it and advise further. Just so you know, liquid spill situations can be hard to troubleshoot just one issue as multiple different components and boards including the motherboard itself, could all be faulty. After a liquid spill, you want to first make sure the computer is 100% dry. You would turn your computer off immediately by pressing and holding the power button until the computer turns off. Then you would disassemble the computer as much as your comfortable with, at least trying to remove the bottom case. Then you would turn it on its side and let dry for a couple days. Have you done this yet or are you sure the computer is dry?

Thx for the video! One question: if you have unrelialbe keys how can replacing the plastic hinge help? Does it also contain the "sensors" or contact points ?
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey Год назад
There are not electronic components in most key assemblies. Replacing key components will only 'fix' your key if those components are physically damaged and need to be replaced which is what this video is a tutorial of. Your keys are unreliable? What is happening? Are your keys physically damaged?

Usually they are not sold separately. You would need to purchase a entire key assembly. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

For dell xps 15 when I press down harder on a particular key it sometimes makes a "crack" or "popping" sound and it feels as if there is a loose object being crushed between the key and the underneath surface when pressed. Would this most likely be due to a damaged retainer clip or another component such as the rubber component in the center?
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey 2 года назад
It could be due to a lose or damaged retainer clip or one that has come loose and needs to be reinstalled. Or there could be some sort of dirt or other particulate under the key that needs to be cleaned out would be my guess
