Your fix works for the Jeep JL. I made the adjustment per your video and the clunk I have been hearing no longer exists. I did notice that the tailgate was a little hard to close so I took a look at it the next morning. I noticed that the top of the bracket stuck out a bit more than the bottom so I straightened it out. Now it closes smooth as butter and no more clunk. Thank you for showing how this is corrected. 👍
Awesome. I still can’t believe that Jeep hasn’t been able to come up with a better design to correct it. For the price point and the sheer amount of units they produce, they need to step up on their fit and finish.
Thank you, tightened everything in the back including the spare wheel and the number plate, never would I thought to tighten the gate. Will tighten tomorrow, thanks for your help.
My Jeep has been making this noise ever since I got it in July and it’s been driving me CRAZY! I checked the handle bars in the back seat but they weren’t loose,, so I assumed it was the spare tire rack. Now that I know what the problem is I can’t wait to fix it! Great video.
You are a gentleman and a scholar!! I have fussed with this clunking rattle for months. Sil-Glided (check Napa) my seals which did help a little but now it’s got a tight seal and fits great. Test drive ✔️. Noise = Gone. Thank you thank you!!
Like so many others, I was focusing on the wrong areas (tire carrier, mount bracket, inside of tailgate) to fix this issue - when all along it was the latch gate area. After viewing this video, took me 15 minutes to correct. Thanks so much!
I am glad to see this worked, i am going to try this tonight since i have done what you did and checked everything else except for this. I was assuming it was my stock tire carrier rattling the tailgate and causing damage to the welded seams even thought i couldn't see evidence of this happening.
Thanks man.. 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Drove me crazy. I didnt have any electrical tape so i used duct tape to try it out... worked fine. I cant believe it was so simple. I never considered anything was wrong with the gate latch since since it appeared to close tight.
Thank you so much for this video and the easy fix on my 2014 Wrangler that I just had delivered on Friday, bought from a dealership in Sarasota and had it delivered, knew it was in great condition but when I drove it was immediately annoyed by the squeaking/rubbing sound coming from the back (drivers side). No problem. One other thing you can add to the process is to wrap the steel metal catch with a couple layers of electrical tape. Doing this as well, has completely eliminated any noise from the gate.
Mine ended up being the window after re-installing the hardtop, so I adjusted the bracket above the one you're doing so the tailgate would shut further in.
Pro Tip: At 2:00, before loosening the tail gate limiter (its proper name), scribe a reference mark around the perimeter using a pencil or fine point dry erase marker. Doing so will accommodate precise adjustments in lieu of shifting the limiter blindly, hoping that its new position provides the desired results. This is doubly true since the due diligence of testing the suggested modification for function/effectiveness (as proof for the viewer) seemingly wasn't performed, since that critical content is absent from the video.
mine rattles a little not as much as it did before, I did 6 layers of electrical tape top and bottom. Do you think I need more tape? Or should I adjust the receiver piece on the tailgate more forward?
I’m at a crossroad is the stabilizer really that important (piece being adjusted in the video). Hears the thing after adjusting the striker (silver latch on driver side panel where the tailgate engages right on top of peice being aligned in the video) the tailgate closes correctly without rattle and looks flush (looking at it from the outside) However it sits perfect with this correction, but if I put the stabilizer then the door wont close flush and it will rattle once again even after doing the alignment done from your video. What can I do can I leave it without the stabilizer. Im sure I had to align it this way after my 35” have put weight and pressure on the tailgate even with a aftermarket tire carrier for 35” being placed which has ultimately has made me make this alignment at the latch
I would agree that the 35” is making the gate distorted and causing it to flex on the alignment. You’ll need to figure out a different t type of carrier to reduce the weight on the gate.
