How to fix the screeching, squealing noise coming from your tumble dryer (Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda)

My Hotpoint tumble dryer, some 10 years old, developed a horrible screeching noise several months ago. If you have an ounce of common sense, handy with a screwdriver etc, then this is an easy fix (so long as the bearing drum shaft is in good condition). Always seek professional advice if unsure!
Basically, the rear shaft that supports the drum weight , over the years, wears down the bearing/support that it rests on, due to gravity, eventually causing the screeching noise.
Takes about 30 minutes
Cost of bearing plate is approximately £10.99
Bearing plate for my Hotpoint was purchased from
www.espares.co.uk
If you’ve got the same drier as mine
Stock Number is: ES865498
Save some money on a call-out , which in the UK can cost between £45-100( says google!)
NB
If the drum shaft has been worn and damaged you made need a new shaft kit, in my case the shaft was OK.

I feared the dreadful shrieking from my tumble dryer was a lost soul, doomed to tumble forever in a metal prison! Fortunately i found this video before trying to track down a young priest and an old priest, and though the hose was guarded by a gigantic acromantula (or just really big UK spider) I was able to complete the ritual and release us all from torment. Thank you so much! 👻

I found your video on Google and I knew I had the same problem. Got the part for £7 and I followed your instructions step by step. It took me half an hour and it's like new again ( about 8 years old). Trickiest part for me was getting the pin back into the 'S' shape and in position. Completely dissembled my dryer to find out the issues. Cleaned all nooks and crannies of any debris that got stuck behind the door seal and where the drum itself rotates. Put back together still making the noise. Saw this video and the bearing on my drum was practically snapped off. Ordered replacement off Amazon for 4 quid..saved 100s in replacement or repairs from technicians who would of probably said it would cost over 100 quid to sort as it's a specialist part. Thanks for this video. I had a look at the drum bearing on ours and there was some small metal shavings but nowhere near as worn as yours. I replaced it as you did anyway. Worked for about half an hour after that then started squealing again BUT this time the squealing carries on even when the drum stops for a few seconds so I’ve realised it can’t be the bearing. Anyone got any ideas what else it could be??

IF THIS VIDEO DOESN'T SOLVE YOUR SQUEAKING, READ THIS Ok so, I narrowed the squeaking down to the back of the machine, bottom right. Which on mine (which is a condensing dryer) is the pump. Bought a new pump on ebay (half the price of some spares websites) and I will change this and hopefully that solves the problem.

hi. I am not a technician. smoke in the drum is clearly not good! my advise would be to contact a technician and not use the machine and disconnect from the mains supply . have you checked the bearing to see if it is worn ? does it make a noise like in the video? or is it just smoking ?

@gsd32i thank you for your reply. I have the metal debris at the back by the bearing panel, and it makes the horrible high pitch noise when on.

@@GwylymDavies I would replace the bearing in that case . Have you cleaned the filter and has your machine been subject to any recalls for the filter ? The smoke thing is cause for concern , I wouldn’t use it if there is smoke ! I am just a chap who makes RU-vid videos to help others and am in no way an expert 🙈

@gsd32i hi, just a little update, so I changed the bearing as it was completely worn down, turns out the smoke was caused by a burnt bit of built up lint.

Glad I found your video. But cheesed off as my tumble dryer isn't even 4 years old yet. But it's driving me crazy. Read somewhere else it could be the belt, so do you recommend a belt as well? It only makes a noise once it's got hot. Once it hits the cool cycle it stops and sometimes it doesn't make any noise for the whole cycle. There doesn't seem to be any common factor.

Hi if able , firstly unplug the machine and pull the machine out and undo any inspection cover you have at the back of it. This should give you access to the bearing/shaft and you can have a look to see if there are any tell tale signs of the metal filings like in my video , that’s if it’s a tumble drier . Is yours a combined washer and drier then ?? If so remove the access panel which allows you to have a look at the drum belt to see what condition it’s in . You may have to be a bit like Sherlock Holmes and do a bit more detective work to workout where the screeching noise is coming from and pull the machine out of possible . If it’s a combined machine washer/drier try it on tumble drier mode only and see if it makes the noise .

@@gsd32i Thank you for replying. No it's just a tumble dryer (I assumed it had a belt). I've had the bearings go in the past this sounds totally different. Like i said only happens when hot. So the first 45 mins or so it can be quiet then kicks off at varying levels and pitches, you open the door let it cool usuallu stops until it warms up again. then for the cooling it stops again. Also just quick Google of the part showed a kit from Hotpoint that has 2 bearing, one was square and in description it said use whichever one matches the machine, so might be worth mentioning in your vid there could be different ones.

No, it was a bit (3 yrs old) but not as wild as your demonstration. Noise seems to be coming from the back bottom right where plastic tubes are.

Mine was really simple as when I pulled the dryer out and inspected the bearing it was clearly worn out. I have had a look on RU-vid and obviously there are other bits and pieces that may cause the noise, belts, rollers etc, if its not the tear drop bearing that was in my video. If it was me I would pull the machine out and switch it on to try and work out exactly where it was coming from and then remove then panel to see what was needed to be replaced and then go to one of the spares websites and see if it was cost effective to replace it or not. I am no expert and if it was beyond me then it would be a callout fee for an engineer , which would annoy the heck out of me. Good luck.

Was the bearing at the back worn?Is it any better or worse than before?Did you put any grease on the new bearing? I believe that there are some bushes/bearings on the front of these machines that support the front of the drum, it could be one of these.

Thanks a lot. I ordered mine from the agency for Ariston here in Saudi Arabia and fixed mine in 30 minues. Question though, my bearing was not that bad when I replace it it had metal shippings but as bad as in the video. Do you think there might be another problem? The sound is gone though 😊. Thanks again

I followed this video - it was really simple and worked for a while. But then a few days ago the squealing came back. I opened the back of the dryer and found it had wrecked the new bearing already. Is there anything different I should have done?
@gsd32i
@gsd32i 4 месяца назад
Hi, to be honest I am not sure. Very strange that the bearing was wrecked. Was it secured in properly? I believe there are some roller bearings/supports on the door side of the drier which sometimes can fail. It may be something more serious than just the bearing itself wearing, like most do over time with normal wear n tear. Possibly time to contact a technician if nothing obvious. Apologies that I can't give you a more definitive answer.
