In this video, I share my struggle with installing zippers into stretch Sequin Mesh and/or lightweight stretch Power Mesh fabrics. I've tried everything I know about installing zippers, however, for the life of me, I can't seem to concur with these fabrics listed above. If you know anything tips about installing zippers into mesh fabrics. I would be highly grateful if you could share.

I work with swimwear and when I have to use a zipper I to use the tape, but I put it on the zipper instead of the fabric. And then align it with the fabric. And i never get those ripples. Hope it works. And another thing could be to interface the zipper area if the tape doesn’t work. 🤗🤗✌🏼

Hi, I am a very accomplished, experienced dressmaker who excells in bridal and formalwear. I would definitely interface both lengthwise fabric edges using a light weight fusible interfacing that would stabilize the seam allowances and prevent stretching. Make the interfacing strips about 1.5 in. to 2 inches wide. Use your stay tape to apply the zipper ❤😮😊😊as you previously did. I prefer using a product called double-stick Steam-A-Seam for applying zippers. Also, use a walking foot or duel feet foot on your machine, so that the macbine feeds the two fabric layers evenly. By the way, you look dynamite in that dress, and I love, love the style!! You did an amazing job!!

It's wrinkling because it's crawling up. I think it can be solved by installing plastic boning on either sides of the zipper. that way it can't be anything but straight.

@SuperNovaSirius

@@mac5924 No, I don't think so. This fabric is made to be skin tight so it's a good fit. There is just less strain on the fabric in the waist so the fabric wants to go there. Usually fabric will then just ride up and give wrinkles/folds but because the zipper is stiff, it turns into those waves. Boning is always the best solution if you want something to keep its shape.

Gorgeous dress. The rippling is minor. But, because the fabric is so stretchy, a basting stitch and or applying wonder tape to both sides (4 strips) might further stabilize the rippling. I've never used wonder tape. The weight of the zipper might also be the problem.

Hello Daniela! I had the same issue with a white dress and after some research i found the solution for it: pad your dressform in butt area to create your natural back curve. You are a curvy woman with a prominent butt and a curvy back spine. I see your dressform and its kind flat in that area... So after this you will made again you pattern and will see that the back centre line isn't straight anymore, but "broken" that will fits perfectly without bumps. I hope that helps you... Anyway I love your work! Kisses from Brazil!

Hello. Im from indonesia. I usualy curve the center back pattern inward from the center to following the curve of the back bone. So the center back pattern is not straight. Thats why the zipper is lumpy. Because the center back pattern is straight.

I just saw that on another channel! I think you are right. However i think it also depends on the reason for the ripple. On knits it often has to do with the fabric stretching whereas with wovens it is like you said. What do you think?

I saw an instructional vlog by Kim Dave who was working on that same type of problem. She suggested :” After undoing the zipper, mark a line at the waist and draw a line away from the zip opening toward the side seams; next, use your curve ruler and draw a line down to the hip line and then draw a line up to the bust line. Next, remove the excess material affix your zipper. After sewing, it should fit with no puckering. ( Sounds like Good advice to me. If I had that problem, I think I would try it.) 👍👍😀

Hi beautiful try using some fusible lightweight canvas interfacing about and inch strip along both sides of the zipline that should resolve the ripples. I use that technique when i place zippers on knits or on anything that has a bit if stretch and it work to keep the entire area along the zipline stable. Let me know if it works for you. Happy sewing. And hunnnny that dresss is 💥💥💥💥. You are an incredible woman and a formidable designer . Stay awesome.

Daniela my darling! I put the dress on without the zipper and measure how long the dress ends up being on my body to accommodate the zipper. I usually find I have to raise where the zipper ends by an inch or two. Then I run a couple stay stitches down each side of the back seam to maintain the length it was on. Then I pin or baste the sipper in place so it knows what's what, I'm so serious. You got this! xox

Hi Daniela. for me the problem in this dress it’s the fitting on the natural curve of the back, and not the zipper instalation (the wondertape helps a lot tho) but the zipper should be more curve in the middle of the back. So the Center Back seam follow the S shape of the back. Sorry about my way to explain, hope it make sense to you.

Daniela, this is a gorgeous design again! Those sleeves are rocking it all the way! And I agree with the stabilizer on the place were the zipper will be. Because you had the zipper out one or two times already the fabric may be slightlye overstressed already. So, before adding the stabilizer I would try to press the fabric back in the original measures. You could use a very slight gathering stitch for that. I hope you can make out the best of all the tricks we give you😂 keep those bling designs coming! I love every one of them 😘🤩💃🏻

i think the next time you are dealing with a fabric with some amount of stretch you need to reduce the measurement for the back shoulder to waist by 1. if original measurement is 15, it comes to 14 now. Also curving the zip allowance helps. That's measuring 1 inch into the waist seam and curving to the bust and hip areas of your dress. Hope this helps. Anyway i love the dress esp the sleeves.

I usually add stabilizer where the zipper will be placed for stability. It helps keep it from doing the puckering. Sometimes I’ll use some muslin or pretty fabric that goes with the overall design etc to add to the seam allowance that’ll hold the zipper.
@yvettesaunders7653
@yvettesaunders7653 5 лет назад
Maybe your centre back to waist length is too long. This would need to be corrected on the pattern, before cutting fabric
@karenramnath9993
@karenramnath9993 5 лет назад
This was my thought as well, the pattern may need to be recut to shorten the center back by taking out a horizontal wedge shape at the waist. As this dress is already cut, I would make a seam at the waistline to allow the extra fabric to be removed. I would also use a knit fusible interfacing, and pin the zipper to the material, keep the zipper taut as you sew, as if you are trying to stretch it.

Hey Hun, use Knit Stay Tape or you can use Knit fusii Interfacing cut into 1" strips which essentially is the same thing. This stabilizes the fabric but also maintains the needed stretch element. If you use regular fusible interface it will not allow to zipper to lay flat against your body and will have a stiff altered appearance.

Ah these sleeves!! Absolutely gorgeous. The other comments here look very helpful- my suggestion would be to sew the zipper first to a non-stretch woven lining (or facing, if you need the lining to be knit for fit purposes), and then hand-sewing the sequin fabric on afterwards. This way the knit wouldn't be taking any of the construction tension whatsoever. I do think a fully woven lining would be helpful for this purpose, if your patterns allow for it! Your videos are always so fun and inspiring, thank you for your work!

Beautiful dress. Can't wait to see your follow up tutorial when you get the zipper to lay flat in sequins. I know that there are some people who take off the sequins from the seam where the zipper is going to be and that way they're only dealing with flat, sequinless fabric (takes a lot of time to remove all of those sequins). The end result they said is always amazing. They also do interfacing (french fuse) to stabilize the seam and it works wonders. Congratulations on this bit of gorgeousness!! Appreciate the tutorials!!

Beautiful dress! Interface the opening with a woven fabric. You can stitch it on right in line with the fold of you seam allowance ( that will also serve as a guide when folding and pressing your seam allowance in preparation to insert your zipper). This method is guaranteed not to cause any stretching or bunching. I hope it makes sense. Hope this helps.

Just attach both the back pieces fully from top to bottom and mark the portion where your zipper should be inserted. Then start stitching your zipper to your dress without separating your garments. Remove the stich after stitching the zipper on both sides of your garment. This will definitely eradicate your bumper back issue 👍

I try to outsource the seam-ripping job to the nearest boyfriend or child - they get paid in mended clothes and candy, so cheap labor. with more expensive fabrics I probably wouldn't have trusted them though. A lot of good tips to fix the zipper/lumpy problem though! I normally just use a water-soluble gluestick. But that is not sturdy at all, so the tape sounds like a much better idea for that very thin stretchy fabric. Edit; also dang that dress is amazing! Love the arms and honestly the whole look. Way to bold for my mousy boring style, but I hope people buy it as it needs to be out there making the world a little more fun

I would try the stay technique that I learned from Claire Shaeffer's books. Mark the size that the opening/seam is supposed to be on a piece of ribbon or non-stretch selvedge; cut the ribbon, leaving a little bit extra on both ends for easier handling; align the ribbon to the edge of the fabric, easing it in place with plenty of pins and matching points as you see fit; stitch it or baste it; proceed to sewing the zipper. I never sew knits (let alone sequin mesh) but that's what I do on bias cut seams that I don't want to stretch and it works great, although a little bit laborious. Fabulous dress, by the way!

that dress is FIREEEEEE... I just had this issue with a bridal client of mine, she got married yesterday.. What i did was pinched out the extra in the CB zip area.. I removed 4 inches above the waist seam... so I basically created a dart going from CB toward Side seam.. to remove the 4" excess.. from fabric.. (Sway Back Issues) ... once fabric was corrected I had a 4" difference in the zip so I removed that from the top of the zip .. I have pics if this is confusing. So I shortened the zip from the top so i didnt have to take out the entire zip. This problem comes from a shorter nape to waist measurement than the CF to waist measurement. (sway back) another reason would be bust or for some tummy causing more length in CF to waist measurement and then the CB to Waist is shorter, causing ripples in CB seam or zip... I hoped this helped.
@janika2356
@janika2356 3 года назад
You can get the ripple out completely without interfacing or tape by easing the fabric into the zipper (that means gathering it ever so slightly without pleats in order to use MORE fabric than you might need for that zipper. That tugs on the zipper slightly, stretching it straight. Make the stretch work for you, not against you!

Ms. Tabois, perhaps an invisible nylon zipper application would solve your problem as the metal zipper, though it adds extra flare to your design, is a force to be reckoned with. It is the stronger and less pliable of the two elements in your creation as far as closure vs. fabric goes. So you are experiencing buckling in the back of the garment. Also you still might want to treat the seams at the attachment points with a lightweight stabilizer even if you do resort to a invisible nylon zipper. I can only image that it would help even more. Cut a strip of silk organza and pinking shears the edges. After you so that hand baste the silk organza. Then hand baste the zipper. Should stabilize the seam and stop it from moving. I was hoping this video was going to replace my method but thanks for sharing with us either way. Btw that dress is sick! I love the sleeves with the pattern of the sequin.

Love love love this dress😍😍😍...I ran into this exact problem when making myself a bday jumpsuit out of a stretch sequin fabric and found that lowering the back neck line helped me out.. but mines was a halter top as well but this trick may help you

This has nothing to do with body type as it was rippling on table. I think interfacing is the answer.

Hi Daniela - basting the fabric to Solvy is my go-to. I make a lot of skating and Irish dance costumes, and have tried a bunch of different things. The Solvy will stop the fabric from stretching, and you can mist it with water or drag a bead of water along the stitching line to dissolve it, and then just lift it away. It works wonders for a lot of tricky stitching on mesh, including appliques, and leaves no trace. Hope this helps!

Hi! I Can you explain what is Solvy? Thanks a lot!
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 5 лет назад
Livia Marin It’s a stabilizer for machine embroidery. You double the fabric with it, stitch and then dissolve it by washing. With a simple seam, it’s enough to wet it, where the stitching is and then tug off the sides. You can usually get it anywhere that sells notions. Or on eBay and so on.

Daniela, try using a walking foot to install your zipper when using knit/stretchy fabrics. Thw walking foot helps to feed the top and bottom of the fabric more evenly to reduce wavy or bunched seams.

Well to start with what a great dress! I love it. I would recommend adding medium weight interfacing down both sides of the back where the zipper goes. Give it 1 or 2 inches down both sides. If it’s really stretchy use a heavier weight interfacing. This is how I stop stretching in fabrics. Anywho good luck & well done. Scott England.

Great job! You have to do a Baste stitch (hand stitch)on the zipper before you sew it.

Hi Daniela! You could try easing the part where the ripple is appearing. (As if easing a sleeve crown onto an armhole) Measure the amount of excess the ripple is creating, instead of removing the excess, ease the center back down to that amount. The center back will be shortened but the garment will still have the same amount of fabric to stretch. I usually encounter this ripples when sewing zippers onto very thin nude illusion tulle. When the mesh stretches, the center back tightens ( if that makes sense) creating the ripples. I’m not sure if it’s the best way but it works for me. Hope it helps :) And THAT SLEEVES!! Ugh!!! ❤️💕

I have an idea for you to experiment with...In sewing welting on cushions, I have noted it goes in smoother if I sew with the welting against the feed dogs ( welting under face fabric and and face fabric against presser foot. So I suggest you try sewing the zipper against the feed dogs and fabric on top. Please try it and let me know if it helps. Also, I am wondering if a teflon foot may be helpful.

Loving it. I don't know if by curving the back of the dress might help with the problem. I have a deep sink in my back and I've done that to help with that situation. But you look STUNNING. I'd make it longer for myself. Blessings to you my dear.

I think if you're super careful about pinning it so there's no stretch, then stitch using a tearable interfacing or paper like when sewing sticky fabrics then you'll have a layer of protection so the machine doesn't tug on the fabric

oh girl! we ALLLLLLLLL hate seam ripping! My gosh! can't tell ya how much whining I do while seam ripping LOL! hang in there! The dress is gorgeous! As to the ripples, I had a similiar problem with a zipper in chiffon cut on the bias. I was told by a seamstress to use a hidden zipper to get rid of it and it worked for me. Ever since that day I only ever use hiddne zippers. I personally think that if you wish to use that kind of zipper in stretchy fabric, than the only way to keep the ripples from happening is to stay stitch the seams first to keep the stretching from happening. Then sew the entire thing with tissue paper or that wash away backing used for embroidery as a support so the feed dogs teeth don't pull on the fabric but on the backing. As to the ripppeling in that dress, i wonder if it will every be possible to eliminate it since the fabric has probably already stretched and so there is more fabric in the seam allowance than there was before. I hope that helps! Melannie

Didn't see this method so I will share. I start this when cutting out the dress- I cut the back in one piece instead of two but making sure I have the seam allowances I will need and where I will need to cut the fabric I stabilize BEFORE CUTTING with either a tulle or chiffon or organza strip cut on the grain so it will not stretch. I baste this in place on both sides as well as right next to where it needs to be cut to completely stabilize the entire area. Only then do I cut the back seam open to install the zipper. Even just the act of cutting this seam can stretch some fabrics enough to give you lumps, and often once you have sewn it in lumpy it is almost impossible to get it flat again ever due to the fact it gets stretched more from sewing. This is the only way I know that I can make it absolutely perfect.

Hi all, when knit fabrics are stretched they inevitably shrink along the opposite grain. This is what is happening to your dress, when you have the dress on and it is stretched the lengthwise grain is going to shrink in length, however since you have sewn the zipper with the fabric relaxed you now have too much zipper length. To eliminate that bubbling of the zipper you need to shorten the length of the zipper by easing the fabric into the zipper while sewing.

You have to remove excess fabric from your center back on your pattern. Center back is usually 1-2 inches shorter than center front for different body types. Adjust your back pattern, try again and it will be perfect. You can inbox me on instagram.com/nmacouture to send you a sketch of what I mean.

This suggestion might be or look unprofessional on a sequin material and I'm not sure if I would like it on this material also ..... but I do this sometimes. I remove about 1 to 1.5 inches at the waistline upwards on the centre back and faid it to the side seam. That way the back ALWAYS settles. Plus this method will leave the finish product with a seam at the waistline and I'm not sure we will want that. So if the adjustments can be done on a pattern first and then use that sample as a whole pattern then we might be back in business. (Caribbean love coming ur way girl) you remind me of my craft and the pride take in my work sooo much. Love u girl

You might try using fused interfacing on the back pieces of the dress to stabilize the dress back and placed from the shoulder seam to just below the zipper.

Final outfit looks really cool, I'm not sure how to explain this but when you place the fabric down after you took out the zipper, instead of laying the fabric flat and then putting on the double-sided tape you push the fabric together slightly and then hold it together with the double-sided tape, Hope you understand that explanation, I love your Channel💝💝💝.
