So you're practicing for that pipe test and your speeding through because you're nervous and you realize right off the bat you have undercut on your root. Well that just straight up sucks! Are you going to throw in the towel and go cry about it or are you going to fix it and get the job? If you're watching our videos I'm willing to bet you're not the kind of person that's going to pack it up and make excuses for why you failed, you're going to find a way to fix it. That's what this video is all about. Fixing a screwed up root and cap pass. Specifically, how to fix undercut with TIG.

Everyone out here trashin on my dude for sounding nervous. I think that’s actually why I like him so much. Good dude with good knowledge. To me it just shows he has a shit ton going on in his mind he thinks and has more knowledge than he can speak. I get this way sometimes my self when I am passionate and know a lot about a subject. Normal conversation can’t keep up with how much info my mind wants to bring up.

Great video thanks I’m kinda new to walking the cup especially on pipe this will help for next time I did a little at work the other day scratch start on stainless and it was hard to get the wire to flow smoothly the whole way it seemed to go good at the bottom but when I was getting to the top I kinda had to hold and keep the wire lifted up in the puddle. I know I still need a lot of practice with walking the cup and welding can’t have enough practice ever right. That was just one of the things I was struggling with I didn’t watch the whole video yet I will this weekend I’m sure I’ll watch it a couple times. Thanks again stay safe everyone 👍👍

Trying hard to learn welding, but you guys won't send over a bag of skills for this ol' fella, 🤣🤣. Keep it up, you guys are my most watched channel, love it. Cheers from downunder.

Great job explaining in video repair using Blue Line Cutting technique... The thicker base metal heat transfer is absorbing the btu's per unit mass but the thinner root metal absorbs the btu's however it can only with significant temp increase because there is so little mass AND cross section for the btu's to travel out to the thicker base metal.. This is the root metal's Planck energy is the temperature 575F or 302C permanently recorded on the surface, so if go higher the color is yellow toward white which you simply don't see it and you have cut thru... (steel) other base metals have own color vs temp... EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS THIS all as heating to cherry red, straw yellow, carbon blackened surface fades, white hot etc....
@PapaCasual
@PapaCasual 4 года назад
Either adjust your travel speed, add more wire, or change amperage. If your fast enough, amperage being too high isnt as much of a problem, depending on the thickness of the material. Being a good welder is all about doing what works for you and staying comfortable.

You're getting better speaking to the camera. Just curious, when it comes to pipe welding any reason to TIG vice Stick?
@sp10sn
@sp10sn 4 года назад
They're demoing and training on regular, carbon steel pipe but there are hundreds of TIG applications for alloy pipes. Some carbon steel pipe applications also but the alloy applications alone ought to be sufficient answer.
@thisdj83
@thisdj83 4 года назад
It’s used to ensure proper root application. 0 slag entrapment ensures that you have a proper root. Process calls for 0 6010 so you do tig root and hot pass then fill and cap with 7018. Many variables but that’s the gist of it.
@GarrettMacIntosh
@GarrettMacIntosh 4 года назад
In my opinion, Tig is faster, cleaner and more forgiving. but it all depends on the procedure that your company is using. Stick is more portable in general and you don't have to worry about the wind if your outside, but you don't have to do any grinding on your root pass generally with tig before you start your hot pass. in my experience, most jobs or companies have a procedure for a tig root and you just need to ask for it and be properly certified and you can use it over 6010 for roots.

so I understand this would be for the welder qualification test. But what happens if its during production and lets say your inspector rejected the weld because of the undercut. Rejection in production weld means re doing OR reparation following a reparation approved WPS, BUT NOT welding over it, right? My doubt is wether i would have to cut the weld and re do it at all if the inspector rejects my weld. thanks

Usually when you try to fix something small you end up makeing it worst!!!!!! Word to the wish if the wall is broke down and the edges don’t look like straight lines leave it alone and keep going I’ve never seen a x-Ray tech call undercut. I’d only try to fix it if the QC had to look at the bead before I closed it up. Internal undercut has to exceed two continuous inches to be a called a defect. Just put a tall cap on it and call it good!!!!!!

question you said that either not enough filler or too many amps were causing the undercut, but wuth using a laywire tecnique .. you should have enough wire but you didnt turn down your amps??? so question becomes filler size.. filler wire not big enough? or perhsps travel speed?

7:07 - “...[root] is flat... I will run the second pass even hotter, and it will push in even more...” Absolutely misleading statement. Yes, the second pass has to be slightly hotter than the root pass, for the purpose of better fusion of the metal of the second pass with pipe walls. But no way you are able to fix flat or concave root by running very hot second pass, whether you are pushing in wire or not pushing. Actually, the opposite is true: running the next pass hot enough - is the trick of fixing excessively HIGH root pass. I did it myself a few times. As a result of very hot second pass, the flat root face will either additionally suck in, leaving concave root pass which will result in failed inspection ... or your amperage was not high enough to cause this undesirable damage of sucking in a root face...
@nitrojunkie9027
@nitrojunkie9027 4 года назад
Key words being "I tried it a few times". You can absolutely round out a flat root by running a hot second pass. Just takes practice, knowing your heat, and how fast in between passes you light back up on it.
@JT-tz5hp
@JT-tz5hp 4 года назад
I love porpoises. Not sure what they have to do with fusion. But I'm sure they have it figured out.
@kwent86
@kwent86 4 года назад
depends what position the pipe is in. If your welding really hot in the flat position you can absolutely sink the root in further. In 2g though its gonna suck back running too hot on the hot pass.
@alekrudy5993
@alekrudy5993 4 года назад
@@nitrojunkie9027 , I don’t believe you. Also I believe you either don’t know what you are talking about or maybe you are trolling me. Why angle of a bevel should be exactly 37.5 degrees and opening 3/32? To provide for ONE first pass paddle to be able to form that melted ball by force of capillary action. Like ball of liquid mercury. If amount of mercury in that ball is even slightly larger than it needs to form a ball, then it does not form a ball. It flattens. The same with a ball of liquid (melted) steel in our paddle. If you make your paddle bigger and expand your paddle wider (higher onto the bevels), then capillary force pulls molten metal higher onto the bevels. Which means: away from the root face, thus flattening it. Here as well is the reason why bevels have to be precisely at the angle 37.5: if your pipe fitter formed blunter angle, then your ark will touch and melt bevels higher than you wanted, forming molten paddle high at the bevels, which will result in.... right, in flat or concave root face, because capillary action will form that liquid metal ball HIGHER than you want. (And you wanted that ball exactly between edges of bevels.)
@alekrudy5993
@alekrudy5993 4 года назад
@kwent86 I agree with you. But even in flat position it is a very risky practice and without visual control. I would give chance for success in fixing/sinking root nicely even in flat position as very low. But depends on material. For carbon steel, with its high viscosity when melted, the chances are much better. For most stainless steels it is nearly impossible, because they melt like water. One second ago stainless steel still needed extra heat... but one second later the paddle is already sinking much more than welder wanted. Also... every time you remelt stainless steel it looses nickel. It boils out. And stainless steel loses its properties. So, for duplex steels they keep those special welders that weld everything very cold, do everything right from the first time and never need to do repairs.
