When I was pipeline welding is when I really was able to refine my welding skills because of the constant repetition that is required on the job. So what did I learn as a pipeline welder and from older pipe welders? I’m going to share simple tips and best practices for each pass that are easy to do and make the world of difference.

I always liked my whip with air-cooled Tig torch line. Really help reduce the amount of fatigue on your arms when your working 7/12 for a few months. I rember dragging alot of jobs just because of small things when the economy was good and companies were paying 1000 bucks to pass a combo weld test and travel pay I dunno if that still goes on I've been retired since 2013. Secret to working shutdowns and pipeline jobs you gotta have a good contact list and you have to have a good reputation as a welder. My phone used to ring all day with offers from other companies.

I honestly think there should be more welding videos like this where they show the hand and arm movements and not the puddle. Too many new welders don't understand exactly how to minuliplate the body to make the good welds.

Something I was taught also about running beads at least from say 3 o'clock on down. If the bead is grey in color with no lite slab coating can almost bet there is internal undercut. If the bead is shiny good chance no internal undercut.

Hey Austin, been awhile,best education you can get is from an old Hand that's burned pallets of rod,my first job was with a small contractor that didn't have bevel machines,had some old clamps and that was it,an old hand around 55 seen how nervous I was and changed everything for me,priceless learning,beveling with a 000 tip,no grinding a ballpeen and an 18" half round, on a 250 wall 12 in,I was good with a torch so that helped,where to set the line back,cut it,pound it square,file it,wedge it and go,that was 74,after that job I had confidence to go anywhere, so teaching them not to fear it,just watch and learn burn the hell out of a lot of rod,I still have my original pipeliner.

awesome video more tips on real word bead running than I've ever seen thanks for taking time to teach these small things. I used to weld a lot of 4" .156 wall and the bead is everything don't push it will undercut the bead and on the bottom tack roll out of the bevel so you don't leave a big keyhole to try and tie into on the bottom when you come flying in and leave a suck back. light wall pipe will make or break you

On small inch light wall pipe you don't push the rod in the bevel to hard you let it kind of lightly sit on the pipe bevel not straight in burning the edges off the bevel and incorporating the pipe parent metal into the bead . It's called skating them in . It is crazy fast . It is a way different feel , technique ,body position ,and touch . I was not a bead hand and the best ever I got was 50 joints of 3" .125 wall in an hour with 3/32" rod . Best bead hand I've ever followed one day got 56 joints of 4" .125 wall in 45 minutes 100% xray . hahaha wanted to prove a point and get into the bar early . There are 2 wall thicknesses smaller I experienced .109 wall and .083 wall . get it wrong here and it is a real wreck .

@johnlowe2943
@johnlowe2943 2 года назад
@@peetky8645 I know u didn't ask me I used to work as a combo welder for alot of companies like foster wheeler, Zachary, Siemens ect.. for one of those carport project would probably be best to use 6013. Just make sure you don't run it cold so it will be easy to tell the molten slag from the weld puddle and you won't get holes in your weld 80-85 amps on a 3/32 6013 would probably be okay.
