In this video I explain how you can fix the white balance of your shot in Davinci Resolve
There's nothing worse that opening up your footage and finding that the white balance is completely off. You then start fiddling around with the color wheels and hope you can fix it. In this. video I show you how to use one of the tools in Resolve to do it for you.

@runhaar1

Mixed lighting is tricky for sure. You'll need to decide which light source you will be setting your WB to.

Heads up, the Chromatic Adaptation color space was set to ''Use Timeline'' aka DavinciWG/Intermediate in your case, but you put it before your CST (where you were still in Slog3)
@HilleCine
@HilleCine Год назад
So should it have still been put before the CST and every nod but set to Slog3?
@he.smile_

@@HilleCine yes that, or just put it after the CST (I’m not sure there’s any advantage of putting it before)

Cool tip! Wasn't aware of that Chromatic Adaption feature. Question: Why do you apply this BEFORE the CST Transform and not after?
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
I was to apply it to what came out of camera, rather than after CST transforms it, to be safe.

Good video. Your screen recording software seems a bit "wonky". Even in 4k the fonts of the GUI looks "damashed". Maybe check your screen recording software. Anyway. Good video. Keep it up.

@chuamidiass

add serial before !!
@MatteoCurcio

good tips I didn't know. But putting a texture node on a parallel node is a bad idea - as any sharpening/blur transformation on a parallel node.
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
Very true. Spatial nodes are better on serial nodes.

Don't they have a simple tool like photoshop raw where you just click on what is supposed to be white?
@TransformXRED
@TransformXRED Год назад
I didn't know about this tool. I'll try it. I often have to correct white balance on old compressed 8bit videos that wwre filmed with auto white balance in the worst scenarios possible 😅. It's extremely difficult because of the heavy green color cast, and constant change of the white balance. Is there something in your "toolbox" of knowledge about how to "re-grade" old badly recorded videos?
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
Thats a tough one. I cant think of anything thats a "done for you" solution. It sounds like you will manually have to use the shadows, midtones and highlights to fix it
@OneMoreFrame
@OneMoreFrame Год назад
I just want to say that chromatic adaptation is excellent tool, especially if you use Calvin’s. But the biggest mistake is to make “white balance” in footage that you have a person(face). In this case the only balance you can make is on human face, actor or character. You can balance her face with that tool, with primaries, with offset and etc. If we balances her face correctly the footage will also be completely different than that orange.
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
I think you have a misconception what "fixing" white balance is. If you use this tool and match it to your shooting conditions, your skin will be in the right spot. Example - If there's a mix of daylight and tungsten lights in the shot. It doesnt mean, making your whites white. Your scene should feel warm.

Why just not to use Temp and move it to the left to blue?
@matrixate
@matrixate Год назад
I tried this but when your white balance is drastically off, the Temp doesn't balance rgb effectively. Temp is good when you're off by a couple hundred Kelvin, not a couple thousand.
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
You can use Temp and tint to fix your footage or the offset wheel if you'd like. Chromatic adaptation will just get more exact results

This seems like a really inefficient way to white balance. Why not at least being up the parade to reference?

Remember he has a “panel” he knows what his talking about
@_trismegistus
@_trismegistus Год назад
@@chicobraz4335 It seems like it could potentially work well if you know the exact source settings, but just using it to guesstimate seems kinda wack.
@matrixate
@matrixate Год назад
The parade can be helpful, but not as good as looking at the image overall. The parade is more effective if you isolate what is supposed to be white, then align the rgb levels equally, but this method gets you in the right ballpark faster...rather, it can.
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
I you feel you can get a better result with your offset wheel or with temp and tint. Go for it. Your vectorscope is going to be your best asset
@2424rocket

Yikes, you made this so overly difficult. All you have to do is take the white eyedropper and click on something that you think should be white. It’s that simple. And to be real honest, the yellow looked better than what you ended up with. You made it to plain looking.
@runhaar1
@runhaar1 Год назад
Cool dude 👍 If you feel that the inconstant eye dropper works for you. Go for it.
@john2510
@john2510 5 месяцев назад
I came here to post the same thing. I saved the "before" footage as a still, tested it, and the eyedropper result (using a white stripe on her shirt) seemed as good as his method of randomly testing the F selections. I'm puzzled that no one talks about the eyedropper method in any of the WB quick fix videos. It should at least be mentioned as an option. If nothing else, it's a great starting point.
