Mechanic Pete shows you step by step on how to fix your blower motor resistor for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. This procedure should be the same for all models from 99-04.
Thanks, Pete - this was a terrific presentation and extremely helpful! I would only mention that a flashlight and a little neck craning reveals that the "second" wire harness loops up and around the heater, terminating at a receptacle found to the right of the heater core casing where it can be unplugged, eliminating the need for it to be cut and spliced. It is sandwiched between the RH side of the heater box and the passenger's side body panel, about 12" up from the floorboard.
Let me just say, complete props to this guy for demonstrating on how to fix this. I was having this exact same problem with my Jeep, with the air not blowing. I'm located in Arizona where the temperature outside right now is over 100 degrees every single day, so AC is a must. I took it to the dealership and they wanted to charge me about $400 to fix it. After watching this, I fixed it myself for about $60. I actually bought the resistor on eBay for a bit cheaper, but got the wire harness connector on Amazon. Who would've thought the fix was so simple. Thank you times a million for posting this video!
I managed it without splicing the 2 wire pigtail. It goes over a mount and then right into the visible part of the blower motor at the bottom. You can see it if you look at the bottom of the motor. You could even go straight from the motor to the resistor if you wanted, but i found it was pretty easy to follow the wire to the motor and run it back the way it was.
Great video and I used it to help identify which wires were which since mine melted through the wires and I had zero as a guide. If I might ask,Why cut the second pigtail? it plugs directly into the blower itself and is easier to just unplug from the blower and pull through. I did not try to install the red and black harness the way it came out but instead I zip-tied them out of the way under the dash. Dorman is the best company to buy both the harness and resister because the offer a lifetime warranty instead of a one year like all the other companies I found. This item is a problem for Jeeps. I learned my lesson of going Dorman over any other when I fixed mine and 4 years later I am doing it again. Thankfully I bought my resister from Dorman and had got a replacement for free because we had not cut the red and black harness. My blower motor speed resistor harness pigtail part No. 973-304 I had to buy again...this time I bought Dorman with a lifetime warranty. I love my Cherokee but if this is a troubled part I figure I might as well pay for it once and get free refills!!
David Skipper P.S I do not work for Dorman but I do love their warranties. I am now replacing my window parts that came with a one year warranty, for the second time, this time using Dorman. Yes they are $20 higher then others on Amazon but they have that great lifetime warranty. Trying to save money the first time is costing me more now.
Not necessary to cut wires from new module to the fan motor and splice to old fan cable. Unplug the cord at the fan motor. Cut the 2 wire (black and red) from the old module that is being removed, grab at fan plug and pull it out. You may have to work it back and forth from each end to get it to come out or just leave it under the dash. The new module will have a fan motor plug attached to the new module. Just plug into fan motor and stuff excess wires up under dash or zip tie them up there.
13th November 2017 here in Liverpool in the united kingdom, just finished replacing front brake flexible hoses on my jeep grand cherokee wj 2.7 diesel. Rear flexible brake pipes, rear disc (rotors) rear pads, refurbished rear calipers with new pistons, seals and dust seals, bled them up, started jeep for a run around the block, heater motor packed in 😣😣😣 thanks to your great video think I will have it sorted no problem, will be on eBay after I finish this post for a new resistor. Thanks for a great video buddy, I have subscribed to your channel and left a like too. 🙄🙄🙄
Awesome video brother. my fan stopped I was told it was my blend doors so I replaced them thru the glove box wasn't the problem any way a lot of unnecessary work and money. then I got mad and slammed my screw driver in the area of the resistor and the fan came on lol so that's how I know my resistor is bad. this video is very helpful my part will be in Monday so now I will know how to replace it. I could have probably just bought the wires and been OK because I can tap the box and it works then it will stop then tap again and it works 2 damn summers and winters have gone by because I didn't have 1200 bucks to let the stealership to work on it and it was the resistor the hole time. lol thank you
Not sure if anyone else posted this tidbit but that long connector you refer to as being under dash and requiring baby hands is actually connected on the passenger sidewall just in front of the door and is strung across and not up. Just pull on the wire and you will see it move on the right. It looks exactly the same as the new one with the zip tie things every 4 inches so easy to spot. So there is no need to cut that. What a pain in the butt to work in such a small area though. But otherwise thanks tons for the vid...really helped!
This is an old video, I have an old Jeep. This just fixed my issue in 2 minutes. I went out to the Jeep and just wiggled this plug, boom, heater kicked on. I know it's not a permanent fix, but it gets me heat until I can fix it permanently. Who am I kidding, it has 280,000 miles, this may be permanent...
Thanks for the video. The blower motor on our 2002 just quit working and I was about to take it to a mechanic. I will check it out first after watching the video. We just had a recall issue with the passenger side air bag fixed so it is possible they did not get the wire harness clipped in properly.
Yes! Bought resistor for an 04 Jeep for $34 off amazon. Got the harness at a auto parts store for $20. I have air flow now but I used to have none. But it blows when my car is off now. But at least I have airflow and will solve my other problem!
Hey thanks for the video. I have a 2000 jgc and I had to take out my dash to remove heater core. I also had to replace the temperature control module/resistor. In your video you had to cut the original wires on the resistor because they go behind the hard to remove hvac... I don't think you had to do that. I think the original wires plug into the blower motor which is accessible on the passenger floor right by the resistor that you installed. The original wires just run/hide behind the hvac and then loop back down to the blower motor which is under the passenger dashboard. I just wanted to let you/everybody know you don't have to cut the original wires on the resistor, just plug them into the blower motor which is right next to the resistor (both accessible from the passenger floor). I don't know why they loop the wires behind the hard to remove hvac when they could go directly to the blower right beside it. anyways I hope this helps someone.
Hey Pete I have a 99 grand cherokee that heater fan resistor is in a crapy place just like the electric cooling fan relay inside the right fender. I too had to replace both . just saying thanks bro good video
Hi Pete,You have it got, just to let you know Napa has the fix for this problem, comes with the new wires and pig tails for the blower motor and the black and red and the small wire, comes as a kit,in Canada its $400 retail, I got it for $200. As for the failure of the blower resistor is the blower motor is old and is now drawing too much power so change both the resistor and blower motor
Informative and helpful video. However, there's no need to cut and crimp the power wires for the blower fan. The fan connection is right on the front right side of the blower motor and easy to reach. Just disconnect it from there and fish out the harness. Now there's no need to connect wires and you won't void your warranty.
thanx man u saved me some $$$$ , I haven't done the repair yet but I did get up in that bitch (98 5.9) and it's almost identical, what I found was kind of surprising, the box is wired for power but the pigtail is missing and the black ,red, and brown wires just hanging there, so it don't look burnt in the box tho I can't really see that well and can't find the screws to take the box out , any who going to get the pigtail from parts store it's out of a corvette supposed to be more heavy-duty....
well to anyone that gave this a thumbs down... screw you!!! lol, I am on the OTHER end of the spectrum, its 112* out there and I NEED MY A.C.!!! Thank you!
Hey Russ. Tony. I live in south Florida and I don't need the heater. The vent flaps are a problem. The a/c works. Heat is still passing through even with a/c on. Mostly heat blowing thru vents at bottom of windshield. What can I do to stop that? Again, no heater needed in south Florida..
I have the same model Jeep and the same problem(but with A/C instead of heat because it is hot here in Texas) Thank you! I am fixing it now. I would like to ask you how did you put the aftermarket stereo and it looks like it fits? My factory radio looks too big.
I am having the opposite problem in my 2004 jeep Grand Cherokee. There was this major banging and thumping from the glove box and now my fan won't shut off. Luckily I can control the heat with the other dials as well as adjust which vents it blows through. It wasn't the blower motor resistor because that was the first thing we tried. Any idea? Maybe it could be the motor itself? The relay and the fuse have both been tested and are good.
Great video on how to replace the part but my fans are working fine. The Cold AC works great but the heat is not working. Do you think replacing this part will help?
I did the same replacement as this and it still isn't blowing, but it's making a sound like it wants to blow. Can anybody please help me out? Maybe a fuse or something I don't know about? Thanks
Hoping you see this message soon. Before you replaced this box did his Jeep show the temperatures on the dash? Mine isn't showing the thermo for inside and no air is blowing.
Can you put link of the parts that you used, I have the same problem, and I'm planning to change the heater core, evap core and blend doors, but this was very helpful.
Here are the two links for the parts we used. Good luck with the heater core....there's a great video on youtube I found that shows you step by step on taking the dash out. I'll repost it if I can find it again. Pete ....great ... trust this trick works for 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ... blower motor resistor ...replacement might be the resistor part # is different .. pls confirm
Hey ANil, sorry for the late response....98 is a different model, but I'm sure the process is pretty similar. Just make sure you get the right part for your 98. Just google it or look it up on amazon.
Just wanted to let you know , that plug with red and black wires, is to the blower motor, and it loops over another harness , and then back out to the blower motor itself, lol, 6 inches to right of where you worked ...
Just noticed your comment.....I haven't had any issues with my replacement...there must be a short somewhere with your connections. That really sucks that you have had to replace it 3 times. Did you also replace the box as well?
Dude, please replace the resistor (black box) with a newer one, they have fixed the overheating issue. The old one is a car fire waiting to happen. Why this wasn't a recall and the old style parts are still being sold, I don't know.
It's a bit of an exaggeration to say "the old one is a car fire waiting to happen". If the resistor was actually going to cause a fire, there would have been one by now, and yet there have been no fires linked to the resistor in the 20 years the WJ has existed. Many, many failed resistor modules with melted plugs, but no fires. FWIW, the electronic resistor module in the premium climate control system in the ZJ was known for the same problem.
I have 2 engineering degrees and the Heater Core on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has my hair on fire!! I flushed the heater core and the water flows fine and is clean! But despite both lines going to firewall being hot, the Heater Core stays cold !! No heat comes towards the cabin side!! Blend Door area is now cut open and they both work. Actuator also works and operates the blend doors! Is there a FUSE / Switch somewhere that is supposed to trip the Heater Core!? Thanks for all your hints.
Hey David, I have the same issue with heat, we even replaced the water pump, and thermostat still not much heat, do not think it is the heater core as it is flushed and no leaks. How Did you solve your heat problem? Thanks
@@kennypeapea2256 had to flush the Heater Core a few times to get decent amount of heat back! I added LIME AWAY into the line after draining the lines. I filled one line LIME AWAY while holding he other one much higher to prevent it from draining . I let Heater Core soak in LIME AWAY for 30 minutes. I then blew Air from one side while keeping the other side closed! This was pushing LIME AWAY into the walls of the Heater Core. The process released a lot of Calcium particles. The idea is to get LIME AWAY to dislodge Calcium deposits that are attached to the walls of the Heater Core. After the 2nd flush, there was smaller size particles of calcium, but still enough that would impact the heat distribution to the inside. I think it's worth doing it as long as you are NOT getting clear liquid OUT of the lines. We now have decent heat for California winters, but not enough if I lived in Nebraska! The ideal remedy is to replace the heater core, but that's not a simple task and not worth in our case on a 20 year old Jeep! Hope this help your cause.
Fyi the connector is backwards from the dealer. So your blower motor is spinning backwards. You still get airflow, just not as much. good video though.
dude. could u please tell me what's up with my 2000 jeep grand Cherokees recirc door behind the glove box? mine is missing. has it broke off and fallen on blower motor? no I felt down with my fingers on blower fan and its not there. I see the nub that turns it and it turns but no door. it has to be in there somewhere I know. everybody else's is but not mine. figure this out for me please. my blend doors I got to and I can fix those. one has end broke. I may just order new ones. but this resirc door problem has got me puzzled. any feedback is greatly appreciated Russ. thanks steven
I have a 97 jeep grand cherokee laredo and it's doing the exact same thing the blower motor isn't coming on at all and I've replaced already...could this be my problem? thank you
hi, I have fog/widows wet while climate control is on, could be because of this? heat is coming but windows get wet and then I have to open the window to be able to see something, have any idea what can be the cause?
well the corvette pigtail only works for manual heat, I have 98 zj with auto climate , anyone know if this wire set up will fit the 98 it's 3 wires also
THANKS for posting this! My AC blows cold, but even on HIGH it just barely blows... is this the reason? Hopefully this is... please chime in if anyone knows :) Thanks.
Do you know if that is the one with auto temp control or not. My jeep looks just like the one you are working on I am not sure which to order. I want the one you are working on.
Russ, any reason you can't just solder the 3 wires directly onto the resistor leads, bypassing a connector? Even if the bad connector is melted into the box, you can drill 3 holes, insert the wires, solder them and save yourself the $100 from buying a new resistor I would think.
Hi Russ my blower is working good but I don't have enough heat or ac. If I replace the temperature resistor that would do it? Or its the core that needs to be cleaned? Please help it would be appreciated thanks
+Isai Ramirez I don't think that is the resistor is the issue.....I think you should make sure your ac is fully charged and that your coolant level isn't low. That's the first place I would look if you haven't already done so.
I have replaced this twice and it has melted again. Is there a way of by-passing the box completly? any suggestions on why it keeps melting? I don't care about the climate control , we never use this feature anyway. 2002 grand cherokee limited, 4.7L
Will your heath or AC still come on if the fan is not working. I think my fan needs to be replaced but how do you know when it has stopped working will you still feel heat?
