if the horn on your VW does not work and you have an airbag light message chances are you have a broken clock spring. in this video I go through how to replace it.
That is exactly what is wrong with my car. I don't have the skill or facilities for the repair, but at least😅 now I know what is wrong and how to explain it to the mechanic. Thank you for a very good video.
I just got my car back after 4 months and 3 shops and now my horn doesn't work. This is so frustrating to see because it went in for a clutch issue that turned into a non start that was from modules in the steering column. Now I'm finding out my horn probably doesn't work because of the clock spring in the steering column.
Thank you I was wondering what's wrong with my horn on my mk5 r32 . I checked the fuses and all is well but now I know. The only thing there is no Ir bag lights
depends on your local area rates. I'd say budget $300 in labour and I can't remember of the top of my head how much I paid for the parts. I got them on Partsgeek
I took 2014 vw passat to vw shop to get the clock spring replaced. I had been told by a mechanic that the horn does not work because of a faulty clock spring. After waiting for 3 hours at the vw shop, I was told that it was not the clock spring. Shop service person said that more diagnostics were needed to find out what's wrong. After another hour, the final diagnosis is that the steering wheel control buttons are faulty and need to be replaced. As far as I know, the steering wheel buttons seem to work fine. Also, not sure what those buttons or wires have to do with a malfunctioning horn? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. At this point, I am just frustrated. I am not having the horn repaired at this time- the quote is too high and something does not feel right. Thanks
Is the horn relay bad? Sometimes it's the simplest things. Does the horn have a proper ground? When you press horn, does power go to the horn? Yes? Maybe you just need a new horn.
My horn (2015 Jetta TDI) stopped working after excessive celebration! All my fuses are saying they are good. Horn/ airbag pad on steering wheel still has a bounce/spring to it. Within a few hours, it had different degrees of volume and working & not working right/left/top/bottom, until nothing. I don't have the airbag icon lighting up. Should I still go through the steering wheel or is there something else I should check first? 0:32
Find your horn and test if power is going to it, in some cases the horn itself needs replacing. It might be a grounding issue. For your horn not to require any grounding, it needs two terminals for the current to operate it. If it only has one contact point, it must be grounded in order to have a complete circuit. Unplug the wire(s) from the horn, use a test light to see if it lights up when someone presses the horn. Nothing? Could just be a bad horn relay. Or clock spring like in this video. If you have power going to the horn, and it's grounded well, while someone is pressing the horn, give the horn a tap to see if it'll come on. Horns are cheap, if they are bad.
My horn is working but it sounds horrible lol. Never sounded like that before so am I having the same issue? The airbag light isn't on but it did pop up randomly a month ago before turning off again
The clock spring is a ribbon of wires and when it starts to tear apart it could be the wires barely touching why it sounds like that due to a poor connection.
It’s still most likely the clock spring. That harness ribbon is made up of lots of very small wires that are integrated into it’s designed so the one that broke on yours is just the horn
