I just put mines together 2 days ago. I ran into the same issue with figuring out the tray and leg configuration… I also notice that this desk is a fingerprint magnet but I still love it. Perfect size…

Bricks and plywood will run you a good couple hundred bucks from home depot nowadays

A smaller keyboard would fit for sure. Maybe some 48 keys or so

I'm curious...what size are your monitors? I use 2 x 24in monitors in my setup and wasn't sure they'd fit on that shelf?

I currently have 32 inch monitors, i think 27 would be perfect. My 32 hang over a bit
