Hey there. My 97' VS Commodore recently had this issue. I know nothing about cars, but with your great video was able to replace the smaller cog that was missing a couple of the teeth. Once i had put it all back together the odometer worked for about 12km before stopping again. After about a 15km pause it started clicking over again and has worked ever since. Cheers for the video. P.S after battling with the needle for about 20 mins with my fingers, I found using 2 teaspoons either side of it got it off instantly.

thanks for this. just did my VN ODO. Made it to 406,000 km before it stopped working. Tried to pull the needle off but it wouldn't budge but i was able to remove motor and board without having to remove the face. Getting it back together was a bit time consuming but possible (getting that screw to line up on the motor was the hardest as the face was still on)

For those people looking for an easy way to get the speedo needle off you use a kitchen fork, the curved part of the fork gives you easy leverage to lift the needle off.

Hey mate I changed the small cog in mine but the odo only works for abit then stops?

@CaptRoverman 3 года назад
hey mate, l found l had to replace both of the little cogs in there. even tho only one was broken it for some reason it didnt like it (l dont know why) so l pulled it apart and changed the both of them over and it come good. potentially the other thing that may have happened is did the cog break again already maybe

Great Video, thanks ! have you ever found a way to fix the intermittent fuel/temp gauge issues ? the one where it works if you tap the top of the cluster ?
@CaptRoverman
@CaptRoverman 10 лет назад
Hey Hayabusa, there is a way to fix it and l am actually working on a video for the fuel gauge issue more commonly known as the 'commodore tap' lol

the needle can be fun to put back on. u can shortcut most of this by drilling a hole in the clear plastic for one of the screws that u cant get to. easy.
@CaptRoverman
@CaptRoverman 8 лет назад
+no mate l have been told about the process of drilling the hole but l personally arent too keen on doing that tho

Has anyone had their speedo start flicking after doing this operation? When the speedo reaches 90kmph the needle will go from 90 to 0 continuously every 30 seconds until you either decelerate or go below 90 😩

I have had it in my VG sometimes where it gets stuck when l hit 90km sometimes but cant say lve had it where it jumps like that

You forgot one very important thing - where did the tooth (or teeth) from the broken cog go?? I replaced the same small cog which had a broken tooth when the odometer and tripmeter stopped during a long trip. At the time my speedo was still working, but when I put it back in the car (carefully) not only were the odometer and tripmeter still not working, but the speedo had stopped as well.. I sent it away to a repairer in Dandenong (Lonsdale St Auto Electrics) to fix it and they found that the tooth had fallen into the mechanism and had jammed it. Unfortunately when I got it back, it STILL didn't work. Sent it in again and when they tested it and sent it back it was STILL not working. $480 later I ended up with a used cluster from the local auto electrician that has a working speedo but no working odometer or tripmeter. I would suggest when doing this job that you turn the speedo unit upside down and making sure nothing falls out, shake it gently to try to get the broken tooth out, otherwise...

Thanks for the video. I have had no speedo for about 3 years but got that fixed when I serviced the auto transmission(D.S.Jones Autos at Seven Hills)It was just the plastic drive gear and the part was about $35.00. I have not had the odometer working for 5+ years, but after watching your video, I thought I would give it a go and it now works! Keep up the good posts.

A few years late but what drill were you referring to when removing the last 2 screws to remove the fascia?
@CaptRoverman
@CaptRoverman 6 лет назад
Ken W on either side of the speedo arm off there is 2 little black screws. Lm under the impression that most models should be the same but l have done this for a series 1 and 2 1989 - 1991 commodore. Theres potential that made later models may be slightly different. When l get home l will take a close up picture and post it soon :)

hey mate, watched you video removed and replaced, however now the speedo needle is sticking and touching the face? any ideas?
@benhodder887
@benhodder887 9 лет назад
is it sticking as in not moving from the 0 speed or is going from 0 to 10 sticking then all of a sudden moving again?

Gets to 60 then gets stuck won't fall again etheir
@benhodder887
@benhodder887 9 лет назад
Bullbar Council I feel bad for saying this as something similar to this happened to me with my commodore but theres a chance the odometer may be stuffed. l found with one l was fixing once l may of been a little too rough with removing the needle as well as being maybe to rough when replacing the needle and l found it stuck much the same as what you are experiencing. How l fixed this was by actually going out and finding another odometer and completely replacing the whole odometer

Done this a couple times, a great video but you DO NOT need to remove needle or speedo face. A small screwdriver is well enough to get both screws off the motor, just one on a bit of an angle. Saves a lot of time.
@CaptRoverman

David Christiansen lve had a few people tell me this but its been awhile since lve had to fix one (have fixed a number of these in my time too). Ive got a another vg that l need to do this to the speedo so l will do another video before the year is out (work work work these days) and give it a crack trying to do this without removing the needle or speedo face but l dont have high hopes for it but its worth a shot.

TheRoverman88 yeah without your vid I wouldn't have been able to do my VN. I just did a VS the same way and it does work. The less removal the better I reckon haha. Unfortunately I damaged the wire ribbon then had no speedo! All fixed now though.

@CaptRoverman
@CaptRoverman 10 лет назад
hello FamousByFamily, yes l believe the process is the same, l currently am running a VR cluster in my VN with VN fascia on it for that 'stock look'. as for sending it anywhere to be fixed l dont know who would do it, maybe a auto elec maybe.

i have the issue of just the odo and trip not working however the fault isn't on the guages (works in another car), any idea what could be the issue, i now have 2 cars with this fault.

@CaptRoverman 10 лет назад
Hey, l recently brought myself a 1990 vg s pac ute which as you will know is essentially a vn ute and l am also having the same issue where l changed the cogs over but its still not working. l have been told it has something to do with the speed sensor which is underneath the car. l am waiting for a part to come in to see if that fixes it and if it does there will be another video on that too :)

How do you change the odometer numbers so i can get the numbers as close to true odometer number as possible because i've been driving while the odometer wasn't working for a while?
@CaptRoverman
@CaptRoverman 8 лет назад
as far as lm aware its actually illegal to change the odometer numbers, from what lve been told when changing the odometer over to a different one your meant to write the number of the old odometer on top of the new (replacement) odometer thats going into the car. if you pull the number part of the odometer apart or just disconnect the motor from it you may be able to wind it forward or back but l havent fully looked into it

I have just spotted this video on another way of how to replace the cogs without having to pry of the dial arm but it does require some drilling: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UHSVqBxCnu8.html
