Cheers!
On my latest trip to Scotland I noticed a rattling sound on my Audi A6 coming from my exhaust. The heat shield was loose and was making a lot of noise.
This is how I fixed the problem :)
You will need:

Brilliant. This looks like the best option I’ve found to fix the rattle on my Nissan Versa.

My focus rattles like a mother underneath. First thought it was just heat shields but my buddy thinks the cat is self destructing internally.

I've never heard of a cat self destructing. How old is your focus?

@@GrollerG it's a 2003. I suppose it was more colorful language than was needed. More that the catalyst was coming apart on the inside of the pipe. He checked out the whole belt drive and everything it powers and didn't find anything that seemed like it could be the source as well as the rest of the exhaust system. I've got a few heat shields that need to be reaffixed but nothing that "rattly". When I first bought the car a couple months back I actually thought the rattle was the cat but decided it probably wasn't as they're supposed to last the lifetime of the car. I've got a video up showing the noise on my channel

@@spaceman9001 you got two things against you thou... 1- its a Ford. 2- it's made in between 1999-2010. Best of luck, some of those do hit high miles. My parents have never owned one long enough to be anything but Found On Road Dead... Except for the 1996 5 speed ranger. That thing was great!

Works great, mine was dangling on the last bolt, so fixed three bolts with this method. (Cost 0€)! Tip. Look out for the sharp edges ; )

Could use flat fixing straps. Very very cheap for a pack of 30x 20cm ones (UK) ... Cut to whatever size and come with holes pre drilled. Solid galvanised steel so won't rust. That rust you have Could have been 15cm!!.. Get a 20cm/ 30cm strap and jobs solid and a gudunn.

My heat shield is still holding strong after 1year ;) Not rattling anymore. And I've used only the parts shown in the video and nothing else to fix my rattling heat shield. Your suggestion is a good one, going the extra mile.

This comment comes nearly 4 years on and the fix is still good. I use however, every now and then the Karcher Underbody wash kit and I give it a good rinse under the body when I wash my car with the power jet.

what kind of jack you used electric?

The standard one that comes with the Audi A6. I don't have an electric jack.

ROOT Cause not fixed. You are making problem bigger (way bigger), you still have steel to aluminum contact thus galvanic corrosion will happen again.
@GrollerG
@GrollerG 6 месяцев назад
I didn't think of that. You might be right but the fix is still in place after 4 years and still does the job perfectly. The problem now is that the car is polluting too much and it doesn't meet the Ultra Low Emissions Zone standard that they introduced in London and I can't really use the car anymore (it's £12.5/day if I drive in ULEZ) So the fix outlasted the car in my case.

@@GrollerG There's no easy place to drill a screw into for the exhaust heat shield and you basically have to take the muffler off to get to the one above the muffler. Both rattle on mine. They only need something like you did, but they're just tough to get to without removing a bunch of other stuff.
@GrollerG
@GrollerG 4 года назад
I didn't drill any holes, I used the threaded bolts that were already in place, the heat shield on my vehicle corroded around those threaded bolts and I've fixed the tin lid on top of the corroded heat shield and fixed the retaining clip on top to hold everything in place. I guess you've got the same issue and the corroded bit on your heat shield is around those threaded bolts that keep everything in place. I couldn't remove a second screw so my heat shield is kept in place by one single bolt and tin lid :) so if you have access to at least one of those retaining clips you should be able to improvise something there.
