Do this at your own risk. This video talks about how to flash VBIOS for the AMD Radeon RX 480 to unlock VRAM from 4GB to 8GB. This will NOT work on all cards. This procedure could also be used in the future if highly customizable overclocking VBIOS ROMs are released by modders.
4GB cards will STILL have 8 VRAM modules, but future manufacturing may make those lower density. Watch the whole video for disclaimers.

To answer a common question ("why would this work?" / "why would AMD ship 4GB cards?") -- a few reasons exist for 4GB cards (will be published in our article in a few moments): (1) It actually contains lower density VRAM, and therefore can never “unlock” to 8GB. (2) Some of its VRAM modules failed testing & validation, and therefore were “locked” to ensure a higher quality, lower density product. (3) Market demand has shifted and supply does not match, and so locks are issued on products to meet demand of said product.

checked in gpuz for the type of vram my card has it was listed as K4G80325FB_4gb I googled without the _4gb and it took me to samsungs website which said its 8gb 256X32 is it safer to try and flash

I have my new Sapphire Radeon RX 480 NITRO + 4G GDDR5 PCIE-E DUAL HDMI / DVI-D / DP OC DUAL W / BP (UEFI) (11260-02) and when looking in windows change screen resolution and you stop in advanced properties, Video Adapter says. Available Graphics Memory 7936. Dedicated video memory 4096. This rx-480 has chips Hynix according gpu-z. My question is do you can unlock the hidden 4gb is this model with Hynix chips? Thank you.

Have you done this with with any 4GB RX 580/570 Series, I checked out couple my cards that are on shelf after this and noticed my Asus RX 570 has 8 Memory chips on it and I'm willing to bet most my cards do since they were all bought during the massive shortage of cards. Whether it will fry them or not I won't bother with it on most of them but I have one that is out of warranty already and had an RMA already so if I do try it that will be the one!

I'm guessing you'd need to disassemble it and check visually. vRAM chips should be surrounding the main GPU die. Or you could google your GPU make & model's pcb

The MemoryInfo program is showing Memory Vendor Samsung but the Memory name is empty, your article stated it should be 'SAMSUNG 616 / K4G80325FB-HC25'. Does it matter at all?

If it's not reading out the *-HC25 information, you could remove the GPU shroud (not too difficult) and look at the physical chips. That would show the same thing... definitely extra effort to do, though, which is annoying. Not sure if there is another memory info program that would reveal this through software.

Most 980s are better that the Rx 480, but there is a huge difference between custom models, (the ASUS gold 980ti is better for gaming than a reference titan x) don't take this advice as if a pro gave it

Only applicable to RX 480 Reference model, people try with Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 (non reference) and XFX RX480 4GB Black Edition ended with BRICKED CARD. so ? if you're using custom PCB card (non reference RX 480 4GB cards), just don't do it, you have been warned !

I was doing this on Nvidia cards a long, long time ago for over clocking. Way back in the 6 series. There were no real solutions to OC your GPU, either it was or wasn't. Nvflash was commandline only, and editing the tables had to be done with a separate editor, then compressed, converted, and flashed back to the card. Sometimes a value wouldn't stick and you'd be left with a dead-looking card. Most times, however, a reflash would do the trick. Many times I had to do this procedure blind (no working gpu) to fix a mistake I made...

you would have to have an alternate pci-e card to see the monitor screen and stick the bricked card in a 2nd pci-e slot and re-flash the bios

Before someone does that they should definitly check if they physically have 8GB of VRAM.. It should be possible to check the capacity with the ID on the RAM modules.

Yes. There will still be 8 VRAM modules, but the ID should be checked against known 1GB modules.

No. They did eventually make some models with only 4GB. In fact, I think there were even some that really had only 4GB at launch, but only some of the non-reference models (with stock overclocked GPU speeds). I think it was only cards made in the first couple of months or so which you could flash up from 4GB to 8GB, but I'm just repeating what Iv'e read elsewhere.

Well I can tell you that I have 2 GTX 780's and I'm waiting for the new Titan class card, but the caveat is if the card doesn't have HBM2 and has GDDR5X I won't get it and wait for Voltra next year.

Pick a card you like and buy it, or you will be forever waiting for the new one to come out, the new pascal titan will be significantly more expensive than the 1080 so they are not even in the same price range to be considered together. www.digitaltrends.com/computing/titan-pascal-p100-nvidia/ Those are more workstation video cards than gaming video cards anyways, may not have to wait too long, so if you have the paper then wait on a titan, as probably only the AMD rx490 dual gpu would be able to slay it, and for a lot less money too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

There are two versions of the RX 480, a 4GB for $200 and 8GB for $240 MSRP. The memory on the 8GB cards is a little faster as well. Some people who bought a 4GB model noticed that the card had eight 1GB modules on the card and figured out a way to unlock the extra 4GB of memory that had been locked from the factory.

My card has an sticker that said 4gb on the box. I took it of and it says 8 gb. It must be an 8gb card lol. If its physically a 8gb card how put it the correct warranty void my warranty ?.another thins what's amd position on the matter ?

Technically, flashing the BIOS voids the warranty. There is no disagreement on that point. However, this card, as I explain above, is very easy and SAFE to flash. If anything goes amok, you will happen to soft brick it. This is totally reversible. Use a secondary video device, reflash, rinse, wash and repeat. Balance restored. As for the card and possible warranty work, you can simply reflash it back to the 4 GB reference model and it will make no difference to the card or the manufacturer. Look up the model on the invoice for the card they purchased, plus i got my nitro with the 4gb sticker, I haven't been able to confirm my memory modules with memoryinfo however (edit) My apologies

No, flashing the bios is either a works or it doesn't. AMD just wanted cards out in retail right away so either 8gb cards got mixed in with 4gb and they just didn't care cause vram is cheap or they didn't have enough 4gb cards to meet quota and filled the difference with 8gb and "locked" it at 4. Only risk you have of bricking the card is if its actually a 4gb model with 4 1gb chips or 8 512mb chips and flash it as an 8gb model anyways. Card freaks out cause it thinks its missing components and congrats you have a paper weight

There is so much misguided stigma surrounding flashing and bricking. This video follows in this vein and, as a result, it is somewhat inaccurate in describing RX 480 flashing. First, all the reference cards are 8 GB. This has been verified by insider forum members at Overclock.net. So, to correct you, you cannot flash this to get 6/7 GB. can confirm, current sapphire and xfx cards will accept this. wondered why they put 8GB chips onboard sold for $200 with only difference being a bios toggling speed and amount available. seems like a waist. hopefully the real solution to this is AMD relaunches this as $200 8GB reference. and aftermarket only gets 8GB models as well for $200-$249. speaking of, i have only seen 8GB aftermarket samples and offerings, so maybe a clue?

Never forget to backup the existing BIOS. You might need it for RMA later on unless you fry the card some how. If you RMA a card with a flashed BIOS you might be liable for fraud, so do this at your own risk.

Would that mean that the 4gb versions of the 480 are the same as the 8gb versions just with different software designed to lower their performance? because if not then i have no idea how flashing the card would increase its RAM it would need to have the hardware for that to work surely?

It is a bit of a lottery right now. The card must physically host the same density memory to achieve 8GB VRAM. Even just having 8 modules does not necessarily mean the card is capable of 8GB, as those modules may be lower density. This is where future manufacturing runs of the 4GB cards may differ from some of the initial run of cards. For the initial run, several consumer reports (and a few from trusted media) showed 4GB cards hosting the same density and # VRAM modules as the 8GB cards, and that those cards could be effectively unlocked. This has happened in past launches and it is a way for manufacturers to diversify the market without potentially losing supply on one card and not the other (issue locks on cards). It is also possible that some of the VRAM failed validation, and so was locked. Hence being somewhat of a lottery and at your own risk.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't just pay another $30 to get a true 8 GB card instead of doing this . Yeah you save money but it just doesn't seem safe ie that the card might crash or something .

No we live in a world where they put 8gb of Vram on these but lock it to sell it as a 4gb to lower the price and make more sale but as its cost more of resources to produce these card, they wont do with every model of that card its on some specific model so look carefully before if these 8gb of ram are on your card dont try to flash these bios if you only have 4gb ...

For mid-lower tier gpu I dont see how 8gb would can be better buy for $40 more? at 1080 4gb vs 8gb are literally same and at 1440p 4gb falls behind but only 1-3 fps for $40 doesn't really justify imo. I know ppl are going to say Xfire blah blah blah and 1-3 fps matters at1440p gaming. remember rx480 can't play at max setting at 1440p rather its best to play most game at high or even med settings for best playable fps so for 1440p its better to get higher tier card and about Xfire, it's would be much better to just get 1 single higher tier card atm. so bottom line is that for ppl who are playing at 1080p (in which card is for) spending $40+ for 8gb doesn't make sense at all cuz you are literally getting same performance for $40 less (even more saving with aib)

Check your GPU-Z ROPs / TMUS if you have 32 / 128. If it is 32x128, you can't, its physically 4GB. Nothing to gain. If you have 64 / 128, you can. "Can I do this?" "Can my GPU support this without damage?"

i am no expert (lol), but i'm pretty sure its normal, for example i have an r9 270x and on gpu z it says that the clock speed is at 300 mhz although its max is at 1000 ich mhz, it only goes that high when you actually need it ( in games or other) ...

Just be careful, AMD will eventually release new drivers that will poll the BIOS against the inbuilt serial number. When that happens your modded 8gb card will get auto-flashed back to 4gb.

It magically grew 256 new stream processors? The biggest difference between 290/390 and 290x/390x is not Ram or Clock speed its number of stream proccessors. That's what you pay for, not extra ram and clockspeed.

***** in case of stock cards it does if you do some research on some models you'll find that they are identical pub's but with a software block that cuts down access to those streaming processors If you ask me that's lazy on thier side but a great win for me They repeat that mistake every now and then on early mass production to keep up with demands but some keen users out there tear the cooler off and compare the pcb's mip map And surprise surprise you'll find what's hindering that card is not soldered lining blocking access to those extra stream cores but a bios lock Like r9 290 and 290x I was lucky to pick one of the early loud reference models by Msi Here we see the same case again Just solder up the part to reroute the wiring off those extra Vram units But then again some just cheat through which causes these videos to emerge Saved me a 100$ lol thanks AMD
