How to Flash your Decks properly!

Incoming the scientist installers talking about aluminum corrosion with Pressure treated lumber...
Here's the thing however. This dripcap get absolutely no fastners. It's completely hidden under the decking. Also it's under a 10 foot overhang.
Putting copper in would be colossal waste of money for whoever is paying the bill...
Materials aside, I have seen this done wrong a ton online. And it's a common cause for many leaks on structures...
Hope this video helps some people!

For someone doing a deck only that’s some solid ass work, from the roofing and siding guy. Only one small improvement I would make but you’d have to be installing the tyvek and the deck in conjunction. Install a piece of tyvek from below that goes above the flashing, but cuts off. Then install the flashing, both layers. Then run your next piece of tyvek overlapping the flashing and continuing up the wall. This way it’s tyvek to metal to tyvek without tape directing the water. Still tape the bottom of the upper tyvek to the flashing more just for air sealing the wall. Just avoids having to rely on the tape, or having to cut into the tyvek at the end as you showed. Something I do with all my flashings. I cut a few rolls to have 3/4/5/6/7 and 10 ft rolls. That way you’re not fully covering a window let’s say, and then cutting and taping drip caps. I run my tyvek across the bottom and up the sides in one piece and extend it above the window a bit. Then drip cap drains over the sides, and then start another piece of tyvek above the drip cap. Just make sure lower tyvek goes a few solid inches above the drip caps backing. Your way here definitely will work, and importantly in the worst case eventual situation if both tape strips fail your only going to affect the back of the deck ledger and not the rim joist as the tyvek is continuous. But if you are ever in this situation again my way will make it last forever. It will Only fail if the tyvek fails, and then the whole home needs re-siding.

I wouldn't be against doing that at all. But the building was already fully enveloped when I showed up. This was actually my very first day on the site. At that point the options are limited. Basically I either cut the flashing in or just tape over it. I feel like less cuts in that area the better. Thanks for watching, appreciate it

@@TheDark_Siderabsolutely. As you were presented that’s definitely a great job and for the guy doing decks to pay attention to that level of drainage detail is much appreciated by the homeowners I’m sure. I just enjoy being able to give a tip when possible, as much as I am willing to watch a vid and learn something new. Honestly I generally only do the bottom flashing. I’ve added one on top before when just quickly and cheaply trying to mitigate a leak for someone who doesn’t want to take stuff apart. My way of only the under flashing will protect the house and stop leaks, siding guys job. But the over the top piece in addition to the lower one is good to stop water getting between the deck boards and rim joist, as to prolong the life of the deck as well. Always nice to get a joint right where the top flashing drops so it doesn’t puddle back to the ledger. So to say I’m sure we both learned something today we hadn’t otherwise thought of. Enjoy the fun, and what’s left of the weekend.

“Long after you’re gone” is the correct term But big ups on that flash job, good shit…just had to redo my moms deck that contractor shit hacked the ledger directly through the siding with zero flashing 🤦🏻‍♂️

The useless second flashing looks like pure dog 💩… look even worse in a few years once it’s all bent and dinged up.

@@TheDark_Sider What about that first piece of flashing, I see it’s in direct contact with the deck frame. Is that aluminum on ACQ or steel on ACQ… ? Anything come to mind? Guess once the copper in the treated lumber has reacted with the flashing material that secondary flashing won’t be as useless as I was saying. You were one step ahead of me … I’m sure you knew … silly ole nobody me
