You can set the initial sketch as your reference layer, on the layer above it then drop in a colour but hold it before you let go and slide left to right to decide percentage of line coverage, then let go and drop in the flat colour. It is a TIME SAVER. Try it ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️ then on a layer above it, add highlights/ shadows/ light source etc
Still has the same problem of having a "halo" even if you modify the threshold because of how "hard" brushes work on procreate. I have tried with my sharpest and hardest brushes and it always leave a thin uncolored line between the color and the lineart reference
Jaffalaffa TV You can also set a flat layer as a reference layer and then on the layer above it click selection, automatic, click a flat area of colour, and then click a brush, when you are adding more tones it won’t go outside of the selected area,
Not gonna lie your thumbnail is misleading. I thought you were gonna work on that piece, cause I wanted to learn techniques to achieve a similar effect.
The title says “how to do flat colors” flats is about the base color before doing any effects or anything else. It’s the start. Next time pay more attention to the title and less to the thumbnail because it’s always misleading.

Why don't you use the line art layer as the reference layer and just fill in the colours on separate layers? Like that, you do not have to do these selections all the time.
Can you give me quick advice? I was sketching in procreate then went and created a new layer to color and it keeps covering up my sketch? Can someone help me and tell me what I did wrong

what I do is: I always set the canvas size as the maximum canvas size (as that means pixels won't be blurred if I print or publish the image at a bigger size), for drawing the finalised lines: pick the "flat/ felt marker" brush, I pick the colour black, I make sure the opacity of the colour is 100% (meaning the colour will be completely dark, not transparent), I pick a certain line thickness for everything, just as an example, for the outline of every main object or character 75% line thickness, for all other lines 62% thickness, for less important objects outer lines of 50% thickness this is just a random idea of line thickness uses, it might help!
Question: How do I create a subsequent layers for the next color in flatting and NOT have to redraw the outlines of the shape into this new layer? I create the first flatting layer and color the entire panel (square). Then I create the 2nd layer, on top of first, and draw the outline of the couch and color drop. Now how do I go to the 3rd layer and draw in the dog without having to retrace the outline of the dog that is shared by the line of the couch? Thanks for the videos they are really helpful as I try to transitional from traditional art to digital art via Procreate. Do you use a screen protector on your Ipad or do you like the feel of the glass and the Apple pencil? Also it'd be cool to see a video about brushes and just some of the other Procreate basics line art, opacities, etc. Like I said really appreciate your videos and the time you put in to do them.

Jeeb Ishak as you go you'll have to start merging layers whenever possible, that's one of the downsides of procreate. With the latest update though they've add some tools that definitely help out weigh it's limitations.
i try and do everything you do but it always comes out different for instance. In the beginning when you said make a layer underneath your drawing and fill it in it didnt work it just blotted out the drawing

Joseph Slinker some of them would be 5 or more hours long and it would take days to upload to RU-vid with my internet speed. I do have some online courses though that go over my painting process.

Winnie Gustafon 'Flatting' means filling with colour, but only one colour. No tone, shading, lighting values etc. It's to separate shapes so they're easier to render fully. I believe the original term was 'flat colouring', but it's been condensed over the years to the specific animation/illustration term of 'flatting', which is why you'll rarely find it in an English dictionary. It's also sometimes referred to as 'creating flats'.
Francy1981 it turns out the person I was working for had misled me about having a publisher. I ended up dropping the project because I didn't feel it was worth it. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to show what I got done on it. I might do a video showing some of the work from it in the future. Unfortunately it will probably never be published.
