For the uk small stillwaters, in around 80% of the lakes I fish there is no population of smaller fish for trout to predate on, so they don’t have that available food source. And thus we rarely employ tactics that replicate those. On larger stillwaters it’s more common with the October period being well known as fry bashing season. That’s largely because some of our late lakes hold a bountiful supply of roach, perch, minnow, Dace etc… that allow the trout to stock up on in readiness for winter

Really dependant on your casting style. Faster action rods are generally better for heavy sinking lines 👍

There are 3 reasons that I think fish take a fly: Aggression (Lures), Feeding (Nymphs,buzzers,dries), Curiosity (Bung). On any given day a fish will be more susceptible to 1 of the 3 methods above. It's just a case of working out which at your fishery. Start in the order described above and eventually you'll crack it!

Oh I've just seen you use the shakespeare sigma and an airflow switch. I'm looking at getting another cheep set up as I have a greys gr60 and a favo reel (spools are about £60 I think) What cheap set up would you recomend? Cheers

Hi paul, if that's all you have then it can work. The line will act more link a sink tip rather than a straight through sinking line. Which can affect how the flies fish i.e the flies will rise and fall based on your retrieve as oppose to travelling on an evening plain in line the depth of the sinking line. You can pick up sinking lines dirt cheap at this stage and I would reccomend you pick up a fast intermediate too 👍

Josh has reccomended a rod that i've been using last year and i'd agree. A 5wt on large resevoirs would work but would be a steep dropdown and wouldnt be a tool for distance. A 6wt stillamaniac hits that sweetspot between gentleness and distance
