Really enjoyed this. I am eighty years old and have maange 23 kts but want to hit at least 25. Where I sail, Calima lake in Colombia is gusty which doesn`t help! the idea of hanging from the boom with bent knees to keep control seems to be one thing I need to try. Thanks!

Great video Nils. I’m 2 years into my chasing 30knot campaign the this video was really useful. I’m only at 21.5k but just invested in full race gear which should easily get me there just need to learn how to use it. Keep up the great content.

Great video! Thank you for the tips. Addition: 5:01 “Rake” is NOT “angle of attack” though… angle of attack is decided on the fuselage by the way you design or shim the wings. The Fuselage is always travelling horizontally that’s why you can bring up the nose of the board by adding angle (rake) at the box by shimming the mast. So the rake does not change the angle of attack on the wings.

One thing I recently found out: in lighter winds the sail feels like its dropping down towards the tail, and I countered that by leaning towards the nose. That position feels really awkward and produces a lot of tension in the lower back. Recently I managed to grip both hands a bit further down the boom towards the clew and shift the sail more upright an towards the nose. Felt instantly better on the back, it was easier to stay on the foil and it felt more like the rig was pulling me instead of pushing the gear forward. The same motion then helped me to accelerate in the gust without the nose wanting to come up. Don’t know if anyone can relate, it was one of those a-ha moments where you feel you figured out something important.

Hi. I heard this same move from a IQ-foil rider saying that for her it was better to bring the stability into the middle, i.e kind of handing below the boom and the sail not so much backwards. So yeah, I think the stability of the package in the "center" is part of the forces being neutral helps the balance

Great video Nils ...I'm also chasing speed on foil - have made 24 knots but increases come slow. I have been waiting for a "foil faster" technique video thanks for delivering! I see you have no back straps. I ride the same board and always take my back foot out and put it just in front of the backstrap and a closer to the centerline for speed runs ..having the back foot in the strap feels fine and gives me good control for upwind and across the wind but for me a little scary and not good control for downwind speed runs. I saw some PWA riders had a releasing harness hook - after some searching I found it. A well designed harness hook that will release when you catapult /crash ( like a ski binding). Its made by an engineer in France the website is "free ride addicted". This piece of safety equipment really helped my speed and confidence - not nearly as scary to push for speed knowing I will release and not get whiplashed in a crash. I started sailing with it this summer and it works very well

Nils, great tips. Your tips came very timely as I seem to plateau at 21 knots with the equipment that I have. I’d like to improve in technique before investing on more modern equipment - getting used to new equipment will take time specially when talking about foiling where a tiny adjustment gets so much amplified the faster you go

@@WindsurfingNils one point of you could cover is back straps vs no back straps on windfoiling: I can get my back foot in but it feels way more unstable while not seeing any benefit from it. I see that you are not using them as well, yet from other videos, I can see people using them.

Thank you Nils. I am quite old and your comments are excellent. The only thing I did not understand is why the harness lines have to be more to the back of the boom. I am very light (69 kgr) and because of this I cannot achieve speed more thn 18 knots in winds 3-4 beaufor. But your video is extremely useful to me. Be healthy and all the best.

Thanks Nils, i am curious to get your answer to the following question. I agree that me can increase or decrease lift by changing the mast foot position, the fuselage length, the stab angle , the wing size, the footstrap position, etc… My question is which of these variables do you choose to change first, second, third etc… and why? Thanks for the great videos!
@WindsurfingNils
@WindsurfingNils 2 месяца назад
stab angle first, i like to go always with the same fuse and roughly same mast foot position.

@@WindsurfingNils Can you myabe make a seperate video about this? There is a lot of video's out there with the same information: if you change a variabele then this happens and so on for all variabeles. But there are a lot variabeles and they also influence eacht other also. What i miss is a step by step tutorial how to get to the right trim. What are the biggies to get right first and what feeling are you looking for, so on. And then the fine tuning for more speed.
@maxsjostrom67
@maxsjostrom67 3 дня назад
@@jeroens4681 not answering to interrupt but I think what Nils said is get your foil set-up right first, so angels and especially the trim of the stabilator so that you don't get too much lift. If you fix the boom hight a bit lower like asked the last step left is the mastfoo position. There I would recommend start far enough front and only come back if the stability is not there, i.e it would be too much in the front. Harness lines is a no-brainer exept in Formula Foil. For Slalom it's long lines and that's it. So summary, I wouldnt play too much with the foil set-up but rather have that optimal and then play with the other variables. And be safe out there. Foiling crashes are horrible

Hiya I'm perplexed that a smaller sail would make you faster. Is this for foil only or same with fin windsurfing?
@Tobias1949
@Tobias1949 2 месяца назад
@@MissileGuidance let's say you are nicely powered up on a smaller sail. In the sense that you can get planing comfortably. A bigger sail would give you more air resistance and thus slow you down. This is how I would explain it. If you are on a far down wind reach, however, you need a bigger sail to keep the pressure in the sail.

Great content, thanks Nils. For the part on mast angle, can this rake adjustment be done for masts that don't have this feature built in? For example, has anyone of you retrofitted a piece that goes on top of the mastbase inside the Tuttle box for this purpose, still maintaining a tight connection? I would be curious to know, thanks.
@fleetwoodmarine
@fleetwoodmarine 2 месяца назад
Nils how important is the lean angle of the board? I notice the pwa racer’s drive the windward rail downward and sail with the board on an angle as opposed to flat ( bottom parallel to the water) Also can you put a percentage of pressure between front and back foot? Do you want more weight on your front foot for going fast … like 66/40 ? I always thought it best to have my foot pressure balanced 50/50
@firstnamelastname2669
@firstnamelastname2669 2 месяца назад
One thing not mentioned is can't angle to control ride height. Most fast riders seem to use this. My feeling is this allows faster response, but I have a long way to go with this.

)@@WindsurfingNils Racers are almost never flat (roll axis), not as extreme as the kites but not flat. There are also constant micro adjustments visible (looking almost instinctive), and one impact is to lessen the vertical lift; there's seems to be less time lag than when moving weight forward. Combining both looks like the way to go, a work in progress for me.

@@WindsurfingNils considering the aeon foil, becker is using the 1.0 shim …. A lot of guys in the pwa and ifca are using it with a lot more like 1.5-1.75. theoretically it is a bit slower with big shim, but practically it is other. While adding more shim, you can achieve more front foot pressure, this allows you to rail the board statically in the perfect position, while the front foot pressure is a bit more you can push the speed over a long distance. I think so you are able to get fast over the whole reach… maybe it is a little bit faster for the gps as you explained, but in a race, the gps is not that important. Or do you disagree?
