With many of the books in my library having custom dust jackets, one of the most common questions is "how do you fold them?" It seems simple, but I have a few tips that can help you out! Let's get folding!

@@mahnoorali20005 What seems to be the best is to ask your local printing shop for a 300dpi poster printing on some 225g (more or less) gloss paper, or on some 100lb text high gloss paper stock, depending on what your printing shop offers.

It’s a lot of fun to be able to customize your binds beyond the fabric/paper that you cover them in …and they’re easy to change out down the road!

I don’t have any bodart covers so no tutorials. But I have been tempted to get some and put them on my customers to make them have that glossy look. Hmmmm… 🤔

I've thought about some custom dust jackets... especially now that Marvel has changed their Silver Age layout. That's stopped me from getting more of the Stan Lee / Jack Kirby FF era and the Amazing Spider-Man reprints... :( I might have to go through with them and just get custom dust jackets.

Hey Mitch! This is kind of unrelated but kind of related lol. I am working on some custom DJs and I want to print them on something similar to the Harrow County dust jacket paper. They have a great silky, mossy texture to them. Any idea what type of stock they are?

That's a great question, and I have absolutely NO idea! My best recommendation would be to take one into a print shop and see if they can compare it to what they have in stock!

You mention "Nice thick matte paper", do you have the specific name or type of the paper you used to print this design on?

It was a while ago, so I don't remember what it was printed on, sorry! I do recommend going into a print store and talking with them about the best kind of paper they can do to match a dust jacket (maybe take a smaller DJ in with you to help match it). The smaller shops are usually pretty good with helping you out!

I printed mine on a large-format printer I had access too. But many use local binaries and smaller printers. Some Kinkos will do it too.

Dude what is "nice thick paper... a regular dust jacket"?! Can you tell us a bit more specific what kindof paper? Is this regular RC photo paper of Barite? Is this 50 g/ or 300g? Thanks!

So I got a gloss dust jacket made it was my first jacket after watching this 2 times I put it on my book and now at the ends the ink is just rubbing of onto my shelf and leaving the white underneath did I press to hard or was it printed bad I can literally rub the ink of with my finger

Some paper does not hold ink very well. It can take a bit of experimentation. My DJ for Batman by Morrison vol 1 does that if I rub it much. Took WEEKS for it to cure enough to where now it's fine with light handling. Some paper just does not absorb ink well and others it takes a long time for the ink to fully try. I doubt you did anything wrong, it's more you may need to find a different paper/ink combo or just wait longer for it to dry.

Hmmm… yeah, you may just have to do a bit more research on how well they hold up to touching and folding. My latest custom I did I tried a new paper and it held in REALLY well (from a local Kinkos) but it did NOT fold well at all as I couldn’t put a light fold it would immediately start to put really bad hard creases in it. We’re all still learning! May want to head to a local print shop and explain what you’re looking for. They’re usually helpful!

It's recommended that you try and do 300dpi poster printing on some 225g gloss paper. You could also go for 100lb text high gloss paper stock.

I used to have access to a large format printer. Now I’ve used Kinkos (when they’ll let me print a DJ) but usually the best way to go is a bindary like Houchen here in the US. They know exactly how to print them so they look 100% the same.

Can you tell me what paper you used to print this matte dust jacket? I have a large format canon printer and I need to know what matte paper sheets to buy to print dust jackets for my children’s books. It would mass printing because I have over 500 books. The book size is 8.5x11

You’re best bet at recreating the paper of a regular dust jacket tends to be 225g (more or less) gloss paper, or on some 100lb text high gloss paper stock. Hope that helps!

@shanthit9192 I don’t, I’m sorry. My suggestion is to take a regular Dust Jacket into a print shop and compare it with what they have. Make sure it can “fold/bend” like a regular DJ does without cracking the print!

My best advice is to use a semi-gloss and to ask the printer for a couple samples and for help choosing something. They can usually provide some examples.

Some get it printed at Kinkos or FedEx, some binderies will do it too! Usually around $15.

I printed it on my work's large format pinter - so it was matte and not the best colors. Most binderies will do it pretty well. Places like Houchen is my recommendations.

My problem was affordable printing and then after finding a semi affordable price it came out tacky.

Binderies like Houchen can print Dust Jackets for around $15 shipped (in the U.S.). They look REALLY good too!
