Me: Well, they're pretty, kind of like an apricot-colored cherry, but... um... they smell like dog poo tbh. My husband: Ew, I'm not sure I'd want to try that. Me: Well yeah, but I'd try it once! You can't eat all that many anyway because they're toxic in large amounts. My husband: I... so... that's... wow. I mean... where do you get them, anyway? Me: We'd have to get them at an Asian grocery because they don't grow around here. Which... maybe is a good thing because it turns out you can't touch the fruit. They cause a reaction like poison ivy. My husband: ..... and you want to... I don't... how... I can't even. My husband: ..... My husband: ..... My husband: ..... There were several female Ginkgo tree on my college campus. Every year the upper class men would sort of gather around the trees and watch as all the new freshmen would start to step on the fruit for a few steps before realizing their mistake. I took horticulture in High school and we studied the Ginkgo tree as part of our curriculum, so the second I saw the leaves and fruit I went the long way round. That stuff makes your shoes smell like poop for weeks. So thankful for my horticulture teacher from high school.

I used to live on the East Coast in my early 20s and in Washington D.C. there are LOTS of beautiful Ginkgo trees. I remember being so smitten with them because I only ever saw the trees online; The golden color of the leaves are absolutely stunning, I collected quite a few to keep in my scrapbook. When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, the road my house has been on is surrounded by female Ginko Trees. I got so used to the scent of the Ginko being all smooshed on the ground, I actually became rather fond of them. I never felt they smelled too bad. Another note, by the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, there was this house that had an entire row of bushes of Honeysuckles. My mom and I would always sneak one when we passed by. Emmy! You should do edible flowers and none traditional edible plants just like Fruity Fruits!

The only edible part is the nut, and the safest way to eat it is crack it raw, then boil it. Then cut in the half. And soak in cold water. Threw away the brown skin and the thing in the middle of it. Rinse. Then use it to make the sweet soup with sugar, pandan leave, dried longan, red dates and snow fungus. It's taste heavenly and it's the Chines New Year Dessert in Malaysia and Singapore. But take a lot of works. The smell of the outer shell is nasty when brought freshly from the market. Don't smell it, the edible part is only inside. Microwave method much easier but you may ended up poisoning.

I was watching the lychee episode and thought of ginkgo."Has Emmy made ginkgo nuts?" And yep! Here you are! About six years ago I was walking to the post office by an indirect route, and happened by this +tree* with gross, rotten fruit all around. It was sad because they certainly looked as if they could be edible--but the stench! I fooled around with the fruits, carefully Nobody picked them up but I was fascinated. Did some research, learned about the nuts and their effects. I'm so glad you show others how to enjoy these uncommon treasures. In Amherst MA, in the town cemetery you may find the grave of the famous poet Emily Dickinson, the "Belle of Amherst." There is an immense ginkgo growing there. The perfect way to become immortal. Oh and Ginkgo biloba is an herbal treatment against memory loss.

I collected about 20 ginko fruits two weeks ago, from the sidewalk. I don't think their odor quite rises to dog poop, but not exactly Yankee Candle, either. I had no idea what to do with them. I just followed your recipe, roasted 10 of them...addictive! So good! (cue Spongebob card, "10 minutes later") - My tongue feels weird, like it's coated in something.

I am surrounded by gingko trees and deal with piles on piles of these smelly seeds every year. They end up smeared on my shoes at times. Never thought to eat them. The odor alone makes me want to vomit. Don't think I could overcome it to harvest them. Interesting to know they're edible and delicious. Good for you!

My street is lined with Ginko trees and I indeed see little old ladies come to pick the fruits off the sidewalk! My street is called Golden Rain St. due to the yellow leaves that fall. It's quite beautiful.

EMMY!!! I love your channel so much! I am always watching your videos. I think they are SO interesting and informative and you are cute as a button. I bet your whole family is, too! You have a wonderful way of presenting information that is so educational and fun to watch at the same time. I heard you say “Nucular” and I had to share my trick with you! (I know the pronunciation is starting to be somewhat accepted probably because so many struggle with it and I also know that there are MANY problems in this world that matter so much more than this. But just for fun, I still wanted to share my trick with you and anyone else :) who wants to use it.)I am a former kindergarten teacher, so when people say “nucular”, it is one of those things I cannot help but notice because it is not the phonetic way that “nuclear” is pronounced and so many people struggle with it. It is a head scratcher for sure. This trick has always worked for people in my family who struggle with it. If you say the word “new” followed immediately by the word “clear”, it will sound perfect! Regardless, you will always be perfect to me! Love your channel SO much!!! ❤️. Thanks for going to so much trouble to teach us about all these different foods I have always wanted to know about! I definitely appreciate it!!!!! You are the best!!

Ginkgo nuts are a common snack in Korea. I used to hate it when I was a child, but now I love it. Ginkgo trees are known for repelling mosquitos, so you'll find these trees very often even on the sidewalk of many main roads in Seoul. Of course, the fruits eventually will fall down on the ground of pave ways, and pedestrians have to be very cautious not to step on these smelly fruits. However, I love ginkgo nuts. They have a very unique taste that you can't find anywhere else. and it has many health benefits when you consume these proper quantities.

I remember when I was a kid, we had a Ginko tree outside of a park of all places, like yeah, that's exactly what kids want to smell while trying to play, but yeah, the park wasn't too far from our elementary school so we used to go as a class to the park just a few blocks away and we would step on them by accident. We had no idea what they were only that they smelled so incredibly bad. My teacher told us that it was called a Ginko tree and that was the first time I have ever heard of a Ginko tree but yeah, very, very smelly things they are. I never thought to eat the nuts inside them. I didn't think they were edible at all as good as they looked because they definitely do look like a smaller version of apricots but definitely don't smell like them. But I would have to go and check to see if the trees are still there. There was about four or five of them. I'm pretty sure they got rid of them since but yeah, I'll definitely have to go and check it out because I'm a pretty adventurous eater so I would love to give these a try. Thank you Emmy for letting us know that we can indeed eat them despite how horrible they smell. Always appreciate your videos and when you say "I hope you guys learned something " Emmy, I always do learn something new from watching your videos and I do mean always. It's so nice to have you teach us different things about food and how and what people eat from all around the world. It's pretty interesting and I always like learning new things. I definitely have to try some of your crazy recipes for different things. I'm always inspired by you and how open minded you are to trying and tasting new food especially when you tried those literal dirt cookies. Again, I'll definitely have to give that a try. Very interesting video. Love your videos. Keep it up girl, you're freaking amazing. Sorry for the novel, just wanted to tell you that I appreciate you and your videos, thanks.

Ginkgo nuts are also found in cans at Asian groceries, labeled as "White Nuts". In case you don't find them dried in bags or in the refrigerated or frozen sections. They are delicious when cooked with congee/jook. Asian rice porridge.
