Tanks for that very good explanaition. I've tried bulbs that have been forced already, ie been chilled in pots commercialy then brought out and sold but i still get deformed short wonky flower stems. Now I know the problem is too much warmth too soon. I just planted a whole lot in a big pot outdoors, their pots and all sunk into the compost, all you can see are the fat round bubs and shoots like yours. They were all showing fat buds like yours with a good root system. Unfortunately the weather is quite mild outdoors hyacinth wise 10-19-24%C moment it's around 15-19 it fluctuates but night time is the coolest. This is more or less the coldest it ever gets here so not much I can do about that, it's also generaly a dry sunny winter. So Im watering but should I shade them from direct sunshine to keep them as cool as possible so they produce nice full tall flower stems? Or will this just make them chlorotic, and weedy? Are they a none starter in my winter, even the previously force grown ones? I always put my failure down to the shiping then shop conditions before sale as they keep them very dry? Should they be kept moist at all times from planting? Thanks

I started it in water too. It has just finished flowering and there are four side bulbs growing from it. Can I change it into a pot of soil? because I don't think it will get enough nutrients just from water.Additionally, the whole plant itself is really short. From base of the leaves to the highest point 'the stalk', it is just a little more than 2 inches/~6cm. Probably because of the warm weather where I live. Thanks!
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 лет назад
Yes it sounds like its been too warm if its flowered but not grown very tall, it happens if its cold period was not long enough. Unfortunately if its been growing in water you can't plant it into soil because its roots are so fragile they will snap off. You can add a little fertiliser to the water to make sure it get enough food. Then once its roots and leaves die off you can plant the bulb in soil for next year.

Which type of soil combination plz
@ThePhobosAnomally
@ThePhobosAnomally 8 лет назад
would a combination of moss peat and potting soil be good for this bulb? This seems like harder to get to bloom than Amaryllis.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 8 лет назад
+PhobosAnomaly yes its a lot harder to get a Hyacinth to flower well than than an Amaryllis. Its because the climate in a house is too warm for them, as they normally flower outside in the garden during spring. Whereas an Amaryllis comes from a warm climate similar to that found in our houses. Yes moss peat and Potting soil should be ok, just be careful that the compost around the bulbs is not too wet. Mixing some grit or Perlite with the soil will help. The growing medium must be well drained.

Thank you so much for the wonderful explanation! How often and how much will I then have to water them? Thank you!
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 3 года назад
Hyacinths like to be kept damp at all times when they are growing. Its hard to say how often you will need to water because it depends on many things like temperature, light levels, pot size etc, but check the compost every day or two and make sure to water it when it starts to dry out. Also make sure that there is holes in the bottom of the pot for excess water to drain out, if the soil too wet the roots and bulb can rot. When the leaves start to turn yellow reduce watering and then allow the soil to dry out for the bulbs dormant period over summer.

I planted mine in October. It's now February and they are only 2 inches high.... What's wrong? UK temperature never drops too low nor gets too high.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 6 лет назад
Are your plants outdoors? If so its still too early for them to flower, they won't come into full growth until the worst of the frosts are over in April. If its indoors then either the temperature is too low or they need more water.

Hello. I live in Sunny WARM California. I just bought my first hyacinths from the store. The plants are all in bloom at the moment. In my area, it is warm most of the year. To store the bulbs, can I store them in my mini fridge ? I live in an apartment and it I fear it isnt cold enough during the autumn and winter months to store the bulbs properly. Any suggestions?? thank you a lot!
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 лет назад
+ Praha Dumitru Over summer they will be fine in a cool dry place such as a cupboard, in their native habitat they go dormant over summer and the warm weather is ok for them. In autumn you should plant them in soil and keep them in the fridge for two or three months. This will encourage them to grow roots and form their flower buds. for best flowering they should be grown in cool weather, so your probably best bringing them out of the fridge to grow outside during your winter, as long as there are no frosts. You will know when its ready to come out the fridge as it will have grown its roots and the bulb will start growing a green shoot from the top.

Can you tell me when Hyacinth sprout? I live in Toronto/On. I planted them in Sept. Now it is March and I do not see any sign of sprout! Thank you
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 6 лет назад
It depends on the temperature of the soil, they usually start to appear in April and then flower in May. Looking at Toronto's weather its still too cold for them to grow. Once temperature are regularly above freezing you should notice some growth.

What about drainage? Does that pot have holes? I'd worry about my plants getting water logged.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 5 месяцев назад
This pot doesn't have any drainage, so I have to be very careful with watering to make sure it doesn't get over watered. I only water a little at a time and I check the compost regularly to make sure it has the correct amount of water.

How do hyacinth do with Kratky method?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 6 лет назад
They should grow well in the Kratky method, I have grown them in a water vase before and have had good results. The only thing I'm not sure about is come early summer when the bulb is getting ready for dormancy how it will respond and how well it will fatten up ready for flowering next year. When I previously grew them in water they never flowered well the next year.

@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 лет назад
No, they are spring flowering plants. You can force it to flower in summer by keeping it in a fridge until May, but this will stress the plant and the flowers will only last a week.

@Gardeningat58N

It depends on how warm the temperatures are where your growing them, but usually about a week or two. Could be as long as a month in cooler conditions.

@@Gardeningat58N ok. They’re in my north facing kitchen window where the sun never gets round that far this time of year. So just receiving natural daylight, no sunlight at all. I’d say it’s about 12-15 degrees in there.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 года назад
@@stratosaurusrex3399 That sounds perfect, they should take about three to four weeks in those conditions. Once the flower stem is tall enough then you can put it somewhere with more sunshine and 20C. The higher temperatures will make the flowers open and the higher light levels will stop the leaves or flower stem from getting too tall which can cause it to flop over.

@Gardeningat58N

You should leave them in the pot, they will grow roots over the cooler months and then when spring arrives they will start to flower. Or you can bring them into the house in November and they will flower inside over winter.

What about temperatures below 0℃?
@kaca2903
@kaca2903 7 лет назад
Also another question, what should you do if bulbs dry out too soon? I have 6 bulbs, 3 in each pot and I didn't water one pot frequently enough so after blooming all the greens dried out. The bulbs are still firm though. What do you advise - water them, cool them or let them sit? Any possibility of them coming back next year? Thanks in advance! :)
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 лет назад
Temperatures below freezing are ok as long as its not much below -3c. If the bulb is several centimetres underground then it can handle -10c or -15c, but anything above ground can only handle a little frost. Also when the temperature is below freezing the bulb will stop growing and wait for the temperatures to rise again.
@kaca2903
@kaca2903 7 лет назад
Gardening at 58 North Thanks! :)
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 лет назад
Allowing them to dry out has probably forced the bulb into dormancy, so it won't flower again until next year. As long as the bulbs are still firm then they will still be alive, however they may not flower as well next year because they didn't have long enough to store up energy this year. Store them in a cool dry place until autumn, and then plant them up ready for flowering next winter or spring.

@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 6 лет назад
Water them just before the compost becomes dry, you want the compost to be damp at all times, but never soggy. How often you need to do this will depend on too many factors for me to give a figure, but just keep checking how damp the compost is every few days.
