Thats a great lesson for us begginers out here. I've been wanting to make some hot chissels and only just started smithing ( Hobby Stuff ) last year. I have no idea where to obtain a piece of EN42 but do have some old springs that look very similar to those used for holding rail tracks in place. Do you have any idea if it might be worth trying those. Thanks for the super lesson
In the same boat as you mate, EN42, H13 and XP071 are just numbers, love to just get a general idea of what it means when the only option is salvaged steel, springs, and any other options that are even close! I do buy a lot of steel, but only stock sized mild in the quantities I need at the time! Cannot afford to have a steel yard with every thing I may ever need!
I'm not sure about the exact steel of rail track springs but they would definitely be a medium spring steel of some sort so would probably do the job, also alot of suspension springs from old cars are EN45 or equivalent
