How to Forge Square Tongs Without Tongs BUT A SUPER POWER HAMMER ...LOL

Colin, A great video. The camera position was well thought out and the lighting is great. Thank you for speeding up the time consuming drawing out of the reins (handles…). I would like to propose a new title for your video, "No Tong Tongs", say it out loud, it just rolls off the tongue, and it's fun say, No Tong Tongs… That is what I call it when I make tongs without tongs. I use 3/8" x 1" x 24" flat bar. I take advantage of fullering which is more efficient than just hammering. I do not have a power hammer. I do not have a video of this but it's relatively easy to imagine my method. I mark the bar at 2", 4", and 12". The 12" mark is of course the mark between the two sides. At the 2" mark, I fuller 1/2 the way through the 1" side of the bar (this will be the jaw), I flip the bar and at the 4" mark, I fuller 1/2 the way through the 1" side of the bar. Now the bar has two fullers, one on each side of the bar. The space between the two fullers is the sectional area (joint) for the Rivet. At the first section, twist the jaw 90 degrees. Now do that to the other end, exactly the same. There is no right or left side and both should look exactly the same. Now all that remains is to draw out the reins (handles). I fuller the reins about every two inches to quicken up the drawing out as I do it all by hand. Then you either punch or drill the rivet hole. Another difference is I put several layers of brown paper bag in the rivet joint before inserting the rivet to ensure the rivet doesn't get too tight. The paper burns off as the rivet is pounded down. Colin, Watched all of your videos, and I think they're great! Like the narration, the shot angles, lighting, and the order of demonstration. If I may, consider getting a motorcycle tire, and drilling three equidistant holes to match your tripod legs. This may be sufficient to isolate your camera from the floor and the inherent vibration from hammering. Just a thought! Personally, I would like to see some of your knife work, and perhaps some tools as well, if you are so inclined. Thanks again for your time and efforts! AAR

..Another Nice set of tongs Colin !! Here's a question. Should the jaws on a pair of Flat Jaw Tongs grip the work the entire length of the material to be held or just a bit at the tip of them??...

You know I've been wondering why you couldn't make a pair of thongs with round bar, you just did it, so I guess you can. Make perfect sense, but up till now, I've only seen square bar being used. Im actually thinking slotted cause im trying to complicate a perfectly good katana and turn it into the legendary Zulfiqar but this was useful information even inspired me to build a water wheel powered hydraulic power hammer may be just a lil slower but hammering away all day then going back to it all medieval isn't the greatest progress either lol
