Stuck on forming past sentences in Levantine Arabic?
Ever wonder how to say you WERE DOING something or HAD DONE something in Levantine Arabic? In this lesson - my 3rd lesson on using the word 'kan' in the past - I go over all these things, together with lots of examples!
In Arabic we use the word كان (kan), which means "to be," to form these sentences. We don't generally use the verb 'to be' in the present, but we do need it to express the past.
Here's what we go over together in this lesson:
- Forming and using the Past Continuous ('I was going').
- Forming and using the Past Perfect ('I had gone').
- Lots of real-life examples to help you use these tenses like a native speaker! ️
- Pronunciation tips: Sound like a pro with these handy hints!
- As always, I try to make those tricky parts simple!
This lesson connects to our last two videos about كان (kan).

Thanks for the great video! I have one small question - What if I wanted to say "I had been..."? For example, "I had been sitting down for two hours when the boarding gate opened." I believe this is called the past perfect continuous but I cannot find any information about how to form it in Levantine Arabic.
@LearnArabicwithManar
@LearnArabicwithManar 2 месяца назад
Ya hala 👋🏼 to form that you need كان صرلي + or active participle present continuous كان صرلي ساعتين قاعد كان صرلي ساعتين عم استنى

مرحبا يا استاذة - ان شاء الله انتي بخير. عندي سؤال: كيف أقول، I was going to… (let’s say study). Would that be, “كنت رح ادرس" شكرا عمساعدتك!

Hi. Manar. And again this video helped ALOT. but i am confused with the active and passive participle can i also say كنتي خلصتي وظايفك instead of كنتي خالصة وظايفك and can i use the active or passive participle in present tense? thank you :)
@LearnArabicwithManar
@LearnArabicwithManar 4 месяца назад
salamat👋🏽 كنتي خلصتي وظايفك👉🏽 You could have finished your homework. (but you didn't.) In some verbs, we use the active participle or passive participle instead of the verb to express events that are happening now. For example, if I'm going somewhere I won't use the present continuous, I'll use the active participle. رايحة على الشغل I'm going to work.

6:40, so just to be clear when were saying qabl ma+, the verb wouldnt be in the past, but in the imperative?
@LearnArabicwithManar
@LearnArabicwithManar 6 дней назад
Ahlan 👋🏼 After qabil ma the verb should be in the present قبل ما تروح قبل ما آكل قبل ما نوصل
