I think I would have taken a piece of the board and used it as a spacer to begin driving the screws in, then, once all the screws are started, the spacer will remain in place and you can just slide the next board in place without having to worry that the spacer will fall out as the board the spacer is inserted too, and the screw, will keep the spacer in it's place.

I’ve learned a lot from Tommy since I was a kid. The one technique I’ve never agreed with is pitching the deck for drainage. The gaps in the deck boards allow for drainage. I prefer a perfectly level deck. The only exception would be a 3 season screened deck without gaps in the decking.
@ryan17954
@ryan17954 3 года назад
Porches are built with pitch? Why would a deck not be? Not all decks are built with pressure treated wood either. And being Tommy is from Massachusetts, where there are 4 changing seasons, winter with lots of snow that does a number on decks.

Why didn't you use the hammer drill to drive in the wedge anchors? Set the hammer drill to the hammer mode after drilling the hole. Light pressure on the top of the wedge anchor bolt will drive it in quickly. A millwright taught me that trick a few years ago. It's very efficient. Especially if you carry the hammer drill, impact, and the wedge anchors (in a roofing nail pouch) all on 1 good belt.
