How to free up the neck, spine and jaw to help tinnitus

Free up neck, spine and jaw to help tinnitus. Gentle movement brings awareness to the tension, holding and rigidity in the body, which in turn, helps us let go of it. Body awareness is the perfect masker for tinnitus because we change channel away from hearing and into body-awareness which in turn brings the activation of the nervous system and tinnitus down.

Please download my app www.quietenapp.com and watch the "First things first" videos. Then click on the Matrix and click on the red banner and work your way through the introductory videos there. You will gain a good overview of how this condition works. On each level there are techniques which I encourage you to try out. Find the ones that work best for you and develop a toolbox of coping strategies. I recommend doing the evening face massage (level one techniques) and the boatmast meditation (level four techniques) every day. The app is free for a month and then costs roughly £10 for a month, or £70 for a year which includes bi-weekly check-in sessions with me on-line live. So for a whole year you get on-line support, useful information and practical techniques for less than the price of one therapy session. Mindset is everything. Practice helps enormously. Understanding how this condition works turns it from a terrifying monster into a temporary healthometre and feedback loop. You can get better too. I hope you find this information helpful and wishing you a steady recovery. Best wishes Julian

Tinnitus is a complex brain and hearing thing, both electrochemical disturbance in the brain plus a attention "problem". With yoga you can learn to control the emotions around the tinnitus plus paying less attention and bringing back the the loudness of the tinnitus. It certainly helped me a lot. I am practicing Iyengar yoga, which is related to Ashtanga yoga. This is also in line with the research of Jastraboff/Hasel. At the same time medicins are already available to tackle the electrochemical part. They found out that medicins in relation to the KNCQ 7 2/3 channels also change the sound level of tinnitus. Those channels are also involved in both epilepsie and parkinson. Furthermore it is interesting to look for the research of prof.dr. Dirk de Ridder. I say to everyone, tinnitus can be cured or brought back to a acceptabel level. And there is a lot of research going on right now!

I also have tension in the muscles at the sides as you mention. Ive tried massages, acupuncture, constant pressure every day and still cant get the knot out. If anyone has any advise id be really grateful, when i lower my chin to my chest the tinnitus increases so i know there's pressure somewhere thats making my tinnitus a lot worse. Originally my tinnitus was from noise damage

great advice. my tinnitus was caused by a combination of loud sound, serious whiplash and also dentistry on the jaw. i spent years getting massage, doing yoga and looking in many directions to get to the root of my tinnitus. recently i found a great chiropracter who used an electromyagram to can my spine and found nearly every vertebra was out of alignment. after only 2 sessions of adjustment i had massively reduced pain and increased range of motion. my tinnitus is now down to about 10-15% of what it once was and appears to have been primarily related to the C1 and C2 vertebrae being out of alignment and putting pressure on nerves and internal structures.

Thanks for this. The thing that I find effects me most is the feeling of tightness in my head/ neck, along withvthe ringing noise of course. Weirdly, it feels to me like if the tightness went then itd help considerably. I will do this regularly. Thabks. I am 6 weeks into tinnitus. Although its a lot better than it was - fortunately i have no issue sleeping - it does annoy me from time to time. But Im confident that it will go soon. Either by me getting used to it and filtering it out, or just dissipating. I have found that thinking positively takes me so far with it. I keep saying to myself in those hard moments "It's here today, but one day it won't be".

@rishyraj 7 месяцев назад
I am in the same boat, how is it now for you? Pls share
@DRM1891
@DRM1891 7 месяцев назад
@@rishyraj hi - sorry to hear your experiencing this. It's been 9 months for me now. Honestly, I live my life how I want to. It's still there, if I listen out for it. But I can sleep beautifully, work out, do my job, read etc etc. There are times where I get a bit fed up and think 'please just stop', but as time goes on I get better and better. I think it's just a real slow burner and slow recovery. What I found helped a huge amount though, was stopping talking about it, researching it etc. Because in as much as it can feel empowering to know about it - it became a bit all consuming for me. I've made some lifestyle changes too. I prioritise myself more now. I take moments to relax ie meditate. But I have also taken up cold showers and cold plunges (I bought a ice bath/ barrel, which I dip in each day). Makes me feel very alive and invigorated, as well as reducing stress. I've read so much about tinnitus, and watched so many videos, and the conclusion I came to is that there is no universal experience, and everyone's recovery time is different. It's hard to accept at first, but there is obviously a chance that it may be around for a while. However I definitely am at a point t where I'm okay now, and my emotional reaction to it is nowhere near what it was. Loads of people suggest different approaches. My advice would be to try different things and see what works for you. But for me, it's been about relaxing. Just calming down and prioritising moments to just calm yourself down. Give your nervous system a break basically. There was a point where I was on hyper alert, like a deer in the woods when a twig snaps. Not good! The tightness in my head/ neck is no longer there, and the sound in my head has drastically reduced. Sometimes I experience moments where I don't hear it. Days go by where I only hear it when I'm in a quiet room. I'm confident that over time it will get less and less and less. It's a hard thing at first but time is a healer. I can't give you any guarantees obviously, but I'm confident that you will be okay. Just understand that it's a slow burner and unlikely to be something that goes overnight. It's easier said than done, but try not to listen out for it, in the hope it may have gone. I'd do that regularly, and it was like a gut punch when it hadn't. Keep busy. Do the things YOU love doing. Don't let tinnitus dictate your life and you'll start winning. Sorry - long message! But I just really strongly feel that there's no universal way to get it to work. Just trust the experts on it. Plenty of RU-vid clips on this topic where people are reeling off facts without citing sources or proof. One guy on RU-vid who says he habituated in 3 months. Grayson or something. He's an example of that. States facts but has no evidence to back it up. I feel that's wrong. I don't doubt he'd developed his own message, but I just don't trust anyone who throws facts put there without any proof/ sources.

@@DRM1891I ask you for help. What are the things that helped you? I have been suffering now for ten months. I have not been able to overcome it. It was low at times at the beginning, but after that it became very bad and loud, like a siren, and the sounds began to change and move from my ears to my head, especially the left side. I suffer daily. I do not know what to do. I did the tests and everything was good. I had an audiogram but I was not able to hear some sounds. They told me that my hearing was decreasing, even though I heard well. I don’t know what to do. The sound is loud, and no matter what I do, I can’t ignore it.

I had been having horrible tension in my sternocleido mastoid muscles snd trapezius. Before finding this video, I went to months of physical therapy to strengthen certain muscles that had atrophied due to poor daily posture working on the computer. I also had dry needing on those muscles from a doctor of physical therapy. Those treatments helped my T reduce tremendously, usually noticeable 34 hours after treatment. Julian is correct, muscle tension and limited ranges of motion in s po be, neck, jaw do increase tinnitus. I have T due to loud noise exposure and high frequency hearing loss. However, the muscle issues, tension, and lack of range of motion make my T so much worse.

You may be in freeze response where the whole upper body goes rigid like a rabbit in the headlights. If so please watch the lecture on the fight or flight / freeze response on my app www.quietenapp.com Go to Useful Information and scroll to the video which is the sixth from the end. I recommend highly doing the boatmast meditation on level 4 techniques. Click on the matrix and then the green banner and it is the first technique you will find. I would do this gently every day and move your neck very slowly and not very far. This can help release the freeze response. Also craniosacral therapy is excellent for bringing you out of these patterns. You need very gentle and slow and safe work to release this. Hope this helps. Best wishes Julian

Hi Julian, when I have been lying on my bed for example sitting up right with my chin slightly tucked in, when I get up my neck is so stiff and painful to put the back of my head to my back. I think the stiffness is where my neck meets my back, do u know how I can free this up, I'm constantly trying. Thanks, I also have knots on top of my shoulders and back of neck.
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 2 года назад
I would try cranial work, cranial osteopathy, or chiropractic work to help free this up. Sounds like you are in freeze response. I wish you a steady release!

Julian ..one quick question...I notice that when I yawn or open my mouth wide that the volume on the my tinnitus goes way up and then will slowly go down to almost nothing.....but when i close my mouth will slowly increase to where it was....any idea or experience on what this could be?
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 4 года назад
This is structural tension pushing into the irritability of the nervous system and the direct link of the jaw to the auditory system via the stapedius and tensor timpani muscles. When we yell the hearing system puts on the breaks on to dampen down the loudness of our voices. Freeing up tension in the jaw muscles and bringing our activation levels down makes this happen less and less.

I have tinnitus from noise trauma,but over the years it's got louder and I think it's because my posture has become worse from having a desk job. I have a knot in the splenius capitis muscle on the right side of my neck, I struggle to do chin tucks because of the stiffness in these muscles, and when I do chin tuck my tinnitus increases. Does anyone know if it is these muscles that can affect tinnitus?
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 2 года назад
Stress causes tightness as does "unprocessed baggage." When the tissues are tight and the activation levels are high then ringing can be triggered by any pull in any direction. A lot of people can change the sound of the bringing by clenching their jaw or pressing the top of the head or craning the neck. The answer is always to get help and support to free up the physical emotional and mental holding and to bring the activation levels down. A good body-based Therapist can help you do this.

Please note, I've had tinnitus constantly now for over a month ( I'm 50 ) I'm fit, vegetarian and athletic, I'm a yoga Teacher so I practice and teach on a daily basis and I've been having acupuncture sessions ( twice already, once a week ) Plus drinking the herbs given by the doctor, mind you it gets even louder when they put the needles around my ears, on top of my head and other parts of the body ( it hurts so much as to make me cry ! ) Oh I should also mention that Ive been taking a pill of Gingko Biloba per day plus Gingko Biloba tea and some Serc pills ( once per day ) Given by the audiologist Doctor ( I had the hearing test too ) which are more indicated for meniere's disease which isn't my case according to the Doctor but I just gave it a try to see if it can reduce it or even miraculously go away from my head but all of this has not help my tinnitus one neat :( Any suggestions ? Givemespeed how are you doing? I’ve been suffering with tinnitus since last October. Mri came back basically nothing wrong. Dr said I have a blood vessel that’s near an artery next to my left ear which could be the cause of my ringing. He sent it to a neurologist and is supped to get back to me. I also have dizziness tho. Sometimes it’s really bad sometimes I go a few days w no problem. Sorry you’re going through this being so conscious about your health. It’s a crappy thing to deal with especially if your circle can’t understand. Good luck.

True. The neck, jaw and upper spine directly change the sound of tinnitus when strained or pushed and when they free up this helps the central nervous system response quieten down.

Hey, so you may have something called tmj tinnitus.. tmj is a dysfunction of the jaw, tinnitus or ringing in the ear can be caused by the pressure you're jaw, which is nor aligned correctly, puts on your ears.. what your describing sounds a lot like it. Do a little bit of research. Then talk to your dentist or primarily care doctor. Usually you will have a mouth guard made to help stop the grinding you do in your sleep at night... Majority of the time once this is taken care of your tinnitus will stop. Hope that helps.. I am not a licenced professional, so like I said you should talked to your dentist or primarily Care doctor. Good luck👍

@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 4 года назад
This is completely normal. Most people can affect the sound by clenching teeth, jutting out the jaw, pushing down on the head, and so on. This suggests structural stress which can be freed up with CST or cranial osteopathy. You also need to de-stress and bring down your reactivity by doing things that calm and relax your system down eg yoga tai chi etc.
