Anyone who says that Patrick is not a good coach is completely out of their mind. He's helping this kid tremendously, even though she is gifted , Patrick still manages to improve her game.

This is such EXCELLENT coaching. He *never* says "no". He *never* says "that's wrong*. He always compliments and then offers new ways to correct what's not right, new pathways to the right shot, new ways to think about the correct stroke. Magic.

If the ball is deep, go back. If the ball is short, go in front. If you want to hit the ball, hold the racket with your hand. The ball arrives, bounce and go up. Stop before hitting the ball. Top coach!

Thank you. What an insightful video/instruction. I especially appreciate the respect the instructor shows the 13 year old girl. Is there a similar video for a one hander backhand power generation in this channel🎉

I'm coming from pickleball, haven't played tennis in years. Learned the serve from another channel, I never played competitively, didn't know the serve. I recently learned power from the feet up and the rotational motion around the body's axis like he's talking about. Throwing your wrist into it is definitely key, I tend to tense my wrist when hitting. This apparently is wrong, the wrist should be tight at first and then free up through the swing. That plus shoulder/hip rotation is power. I also push off my back foot and rotate it forward, helps add to the rotation of my body. Feels like I'm driving into the shot now. And the wrist motion now seems very much like a bullwhip, if anyone here has experience with one. It's a pull back, kind of compressing a spring type motion, and then a quick flick forward for the snap and follow through will be as he says, loose wrist, let it guide the body weight. I have no doubt I'll be working on this in order to improve my shots. This holds true for pickleball, where the serves are low and down to up motion/rotation. It's almost the opposite of a tennis serve. I find myself rotating vertically much more. When I reverse it and go up to down, that's where my tennis serve comes from, and it has greatly improved. I never thought I'd be able to do a decent serve lol. Holds true in forehands and backhands as well, I try to track the ball with my leading shoulder and use that motion for the pre hit wind up, the hit and follow through have the back foot rotating and pushing into the front foot. Works very well. I've noticed a huge difference in the accuracy and power of my pickleball shots and in tennis wall ball. Outstanding video, I learned all the little details of a proper hit. 👍

If you know how to throw a baseball or a 🏈 half decent then you already know how to serve in tennis. Just need to tweak a few things and stick a racket in your hand. The pattern is 90% there already.

Hi, I like these basic tips with the young people. My hit is too linear, but my wrist hurts due to injuries-- also feel nerve pain-which I think comes from the spine around the neck. I have problems hitting the higher balls properly. I re-play some of your videos. Have a nice day.

Patrick I noticed that the student still got the racquet behind her even though you asked her to shorten the stroke. As a teacher for young kids what is the best way to keep the racquet on the hitting side. Also you are asking the kids to throw the wrist before impact? Would that not smother or cover the ball?

Important to say that this advice is for advanced players. Hit the ball when is rising is very difficult. It takes a lot of timing. Beginners shouldn't try this but wait to hit the ball in the comfort zone. By the way, most of the advices in this channel are not for beginners.

Lock your wrist and arm in your power position when making contact with tennis ball would make more sense. Seems like the whipping motion is done before or after contact with the ball. Some players are able to whipped their wrist and turn their waist when hitting ground strokes. This girl should experiment with caution it's not style or ground stroke that just any tennis player can do. You have to develop your body and muscles to play that style of tennis use caution plenty of practice. Anyway this girl should add more heavier Topspin to keep her opponents deep behind the baseline then flatten out a little her forhand and Backhand Passing shots for more speed. Obviously she going to grow taller and will need to adjust her game from time to time. To earn a living at being a professional tennis player you need all the shots and mental strategies to win tournaments when you're playing great also when you're playing bad.

Isn't he trying to get her to spin more by encouraging her to relax the wrist and speed up the racquet head?

I have watched many pros slow motion videos and come to the conclusion that pros don’t roll their wrist as suggested in this video. I also think teaching a young kid to use their wrist instead of their arm to hit the ball is very dangerous. There is very little to no muscle in human’s wrist and to have kids constantly using wrist to roll a 300+ gram racket will surely damage their wrist at some point.

It’s about keeping the wrist loose as much as the arm. Sometimes a player can choke up on the handle too much and the wrist is too tight instead of letting it loose and the racquet head plowing through the ball. He’s definitely not saying to snap your wrist to hit. But to let the kinetic energy transfer throughout the arm without resistance.
@Cleveland_Rocks
@Cleveland_Rocks Год назад
He is asking them to NOT use the wrist. He wants a loose wrist and for the body to supply the power.
@Jitzie
@Jitzie Год назад
I can see why you would say this as Patrick's hand gestures often look like he's slapping the ball away with his wrist, but he's not implying this. If you slow the video down and look at the girl's wrist - loose in the drop phase and looks solid during contact.

If you look at your videos from top players, you’ll notice their wrist is at the same position right before contact, at contact and right after contact. They don’t actually roll their wrist.
