What general part of California are you in? I’m in southern Oregon and am very new to diving. I just want to see how your lessons will apply to the situation here

I mostly film from Mendocino to L.A. in these videos but I spearfished for years in Humboldt andf Del Norte so this content absolutely translates to the North Coast and Oregon Coast. You will find mostly the same species up there (perch, rockfish, cabs, lings, Dungeness, scallops, etc.). Good luck!

Thanks for great videos! Question: if you keep fish in that net bag for lobsters, don't sea lions or seagulls try to reach it thru the bag?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 10 месяцев назад
They do not really bother us. Gulls, sea lions and seals are most bold around highly populated areas where humans feed them. They look but do not touch in the more wild places where we hunt. Good question!

Are there any books you recommend for what is edible/ legal to eat?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 7 месяцев назад
The legality is one issue and the edibility and how/where to find it is another. For legal rules check out the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Ocean Fishing Regulations PDF and Ocean Regulations Map for where you can and cannot go. For info on how to find/catch fild fish and shellfish on the coast, check out Kirk Lombard's The Sea Forager's Guide to the North Coast. It absolutely applys to NorCal and SoCal alike in my opinion. We also just launched a forum on my website catchncookcalifornia.com where you can go to meet folks in your area, ask questions, share info, etc. Hope that helps!

what I noticed from watching scallops and crabs while hunting for them is that when they feel a change of shadow or water movement near them , they will react by hiding or closing the shell mouth so even if putting bait in front of them they will sense danger and run or hide until is all ok for them to open up again, since they have very bad eye sight, light sensitivity is their best weapon ( when I shine a bright light to a scallop from 3or 4 ft away many will close their mouth to camouflage, so hunting close to them is not good , better to spot them from a distance and focus their position even if the hide )... just my 2 cents ; hope to get back in the water soon and great idea how to set up the board for gear ;I actually have those boards trying to set up something like that to pull behind my kayak .if kayak diving ,so thank you for all your videos!! I am in LA and hope to see you out there some day ! Cheers my friend !
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Год назад
Agreed. Yet, even when I left that snare for five min these crabs were not interested and a typical interval between pulling crab snares is about eight min so I think these simply were not feeding. Also, when I soaked the fish heads for the whole dive the only crab on them was a male so I think the females here had other egg-related plans. Maybe similar to salmon that do not feed when reproducing?
@vincentrussell7246
@vincentrussell7246 8 месяцев назад
If you keeping them you got to do a catch and cook and eating them which a lot of the crabers aren't doing but isn't that the reason you're catching them is to cook them up and eat them boiled or steamed or just sitting around the table picking them with a couple cold brews

Shear torture Kevin! No Dungeness here in Tucson Arizona so we rely on Costco for our iced crab. I used to harvest my own off the Washington state coast and miss the hell out of dropping traps, retrieving hours later, and putting out a great spread. Butter dripping everywhere. Adore your work. Blessings, K.T.

I love the set up but I do see some flaws, Using a yellow milk crate for visibility, I've affixed an inner tube with rope, providing a buoyant platform. A dive flag mounted on a 4-foot, 1-inch PVC water pipe ensures visibility. This setup not only holds my gear but also serves as a marker for others. For storage while traveling, a container accommodates my knife and equipment, maintaining tidiness in the car. Carabiners secure my goodies bag, spear gun, collapsible crab cage, and anchor,the rope as a measuring tool with markers to know how deep I will be diving, making for a comprehensive and efficient arrangement.

Nice I always wanted to try diving for crab. Why don't you use a dive tube like we use for Abalone?
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Год назад
I highly recommend a crab dive! The tubes definitely work but are far less streamline when gliding over kelp or going through waves or riding a wave back in over the rocks in heavy surf in my experience. I also find that for longer guns and pole spears they seem to be more secure on the longer profile of the body board. My experience has also been, when diving with someone using a tube, when we go to kick from one rock to another the diver with the body board covers the distance in about half of the time.

any tips for diving the sandy areas with more than 2ft vis? every time I try to dive where the crabs are it's almost completely dark at depth
@catchncookcalifornia1574
@catchncookcalifornia1574 Год назад
The only tips I could give there is to try an wait a few days after a big swell for the turbidity to settle out and try to hit areas with larger sand grain size and less silt so it will settle out of the water column faster. Also, try to dive in deeper holes and avoid the sand bars that are shallower as the vis seems to diminish rapidly where the wave action is more violent.

Any sandy beach in central CA or Northern CA. Beginners would do best in sandy bottom coves where the swell might be less severe. I would only suggest going on the calmest of calm days though.

At the time I told him I had not seen anything like that, but this footage definitely shows differences between the behaviors of the two sexes!
